The VICIOUS CYCLE Tour Was Triumphant
This album proves that the VICIOUS CYCLE tour was triumphant, especially given guitarist/leader Gary Rossington's health issues. The performances here are all great, and the band digs out some long-neglected songs.

Lyve: The Vicious Cycle Tour buy CD music In the course of putting together the live Led Zeppelin DVD for 2003 release, Jimmy Page came across some great concert recordings from the band's 1972 stint in California. HOW THE WEST WAS WON is three discs' worth of vintage Zep, far superior to the band's only other live album THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME. Here is the fearsome foursome in all their glory and fury, coming off like crazed rock & roll Vikings on the opening "Immigrant Song," reinventing the blues form on "Heartbreaker," and just plain rocking the doors off the joint on "Rock and Roll" and "Black Dog." This being 1972, the band had made its journey into the folk-rock realm as well, and come out with the touching "Going to California" and "That's the Way," the earthy "Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp," and the minstrel-in-the-hills fancy of "Over the Hills and Far Away," all of which are given strong voice here. A 25-minute "Dazed and Confused" and epic-length drum solo on the John Bonham feature "Moby Dick" show that Zep was unafraid to venture into anything they damn well pleased, but the bluesy grit and primal hard-rock crunch of their feel throughout this collection reveals the pure visceral magic of which these '70s icons were capable. Recorded at Los Angeles Forum, Los Angeles, California and Long Beach Area, Long Beach, California on June 25 & 27, 1972. Personnel: Robert Plant (vocals, harmonica); Jimmy Page (acoustic guitar, electric guitar); John Paul Jones (mandolin, keyboards, bass guitar); John Bonham (drums, percussion). Audio Mixer: Kevin Shirley. Recording information: LA Forum (06/25/1972/06/27/1972); Long Beach Arena (06/25/1972/06/27/1972); Sarm West Studios, London, England (06/25/1972/06/27/1972). Photographers: Jeffrey Mayer; James Fortune; Michael Putland; Jim Cummins. Led Zeppelin: Robert Plant (vocals); Jimmy Page (guitar); John Paul Jones (keyboards, bass); John Bonham (drums).

Lyve: The Vicious Cycle Tour CD music DEJA VOODOO serves as a comeback for Gov't Mule, who lost founding member Allen Woody in August 2000. Bandmates Warren Haynes and Matt Abts carried on with a search to fill Woody's shoes, and this led to live recordings featuring guest bassists on each cut. This studio outing welcomes the arrival of former Black Crowes bass player Andy Hess and keyboardist Danny Louis, whose entry transforms the Mule into a quartet, upping the creative potential for all involved. Being the consummate musician that he is, Haynes guides this potent ensemble down a wide-ranging path. Wielding his ever-present slide, the in-demand guitarist pours plenty of soulful playing into the country-tinged mellowness of "Wine and Blood," switching gears to plug a wah-wah pedal in for the muscular strut "Perfect Shelter." Louis's organ provides a neat foil for Haynes, be it the New Orleans-like funk fills that pepper "Bad Man Walking" or the subtle support provided on the soaring "Little Toy Brain." Hess also gets his licks in, holding the bottom down admirably with Abts, particularly on the rumbling "Mr. Man" and the thumping blues-rock of "Slackjaw Jezebel." DEJA VOODOO proves Gov't Mule still has plenty of kick left. Audio Mixer: Michael Barbiero. Recording information: Water Music, Hoboken, NJ. Photographer: Danny Clinch. Gov't Mule: Andy Hess (bass guitar); Matt Abts, Warren Haynes, Danny Louis. Personnel: Warren Haynes (vocals, guitar); Danny Louis (keyboards); Matt Abts (drums).

Lyve: The Vicious Cycle Tour songs One of the hardest-working men in show business (after, of course, James Brown), Warren Haynes spent the years preceding LIVE AT BONNAROO juggling gigs with the Dead, Phil Lesh & Friends, Gov't Mule, and the Allman Brothers Band. In 2004, Haynes went on the road as a member of the Dead, also pulling double-duty as an opening act with nothing but his guitar to accompany him. These 16 songs offer a sampling of those solo sets and a fascinating cross-section of material, reflecting the kind of impressive versatility that's allowed Haynes to move between the worlds of rock, blues, and country. The combination of his gruff yet soulful vocalizing and nimble finger-picking results in moving covers of Grateful Dead classics ("To Lay Me Down," "Stella Blue") mixed in among tunes originally written for Gov't Mule ("Fallen Down") and earlier solo work ("I'll Be the One"). The most pleasant surprises, however, are this guitar hero's credible stabs at Radiohead ("Lucky") and U2 ("One"), two groups not normally associated with the jam-band scene. A duet with South African vocalist Vusi Mahlasela on the uplifting "Soulshine" is the perfect closer for this exemplary live recording. Live Recording Photographer: Danny Clinch. Personnel: Warren Haynes (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Warren Haynes; Vusi Mahlasela (vocals). Audio Mixers: John Alagia; Jon Altschiller.

Lyve: The Vicious Cycle Tour album for sale Twenty seven years after it was compiled, the apocryphal Stompin' Room Only is finally released. The album, which suffers only from being the seam album between Marshall Tucker's tenures at Capricorn and Warner Bros, was recorded during the European tour in support of Carolina Dreams. Here are 11 tracks by the original band -- with guests on a few -- with two cuts from a Milwaukee 1974 show tacked on for good measure. This is Marshall Tucker as they have never been heard on record. Like the Allmans, the Tuckers were all about seamlessly expanding from one musical form into another. Whereas studio versions of "Can't You See," "Take the Highway," "Ramblin'," and "24 Hours at a time," would weave elements of jazz, blues, honky tonk, gospel, and Appalachian folk music into the body of a song, on these extended jamming excursions they fully indulged their passions, winding in and out of genres without seams or sudden shifts. On an elongated cover of B.B. King's signature tune, "The Thrill Is Gone," with a number of guests including Dickey Betts and Charlie Daniels (making for a four-guitar front line!) as well as Jimmy Hall and Chuck Leavell, Chicago blues, jazz, and country are all enmeshed simultaneously, as the hidden nuances in the song come to the fore. On the gloriously long "24 Hours at a Time," Tom Caldwell's bass moves through the various jazz eras as Daniels fiddles his ass off to keep time with Toy Caldwell's knotty, razor-wire leads. And for those fans of the Marshal Tucker Band whose gauge is the song, "Can't You See," there isn't a better one on record or bootleg that's better than this one. With its shuffling, funky backbeat, and Toy Caldwell's impassioned vocal leading the charge to his burning solos, it literally send chills up the spine. This is one of the few cases where a found "lost" recording lives up its legend. ~ Thom Jurek The Marshall Tucker Band includes: Doug Gray (vocals); Toy Caldwell (guitar); Jerry (flute); Tommy (bass); Paul (drums). Live Material Fr. 1974-1976. Recorded between 1974 & 1976. Personnel: Toy Caldwell (vocals, guitar); Doug Gray (vocals, percussion, background vocals); Charlie Daniels (guitar, fiddle); Richard Betts (guitar); Jerry Eubanks (flute, saxophone, keyboards, background vocals); Jimmy Hall (harmonica); Chuck Leavell (piano); Fred Edwards, Paul Riddle (drums); Jamie Nichol (congas); Tommy Caldwell (background vocals). Audio Remasterer: Paul Hornsby. Liner Note Author: Michael Buffalo Smith. Recording information: The Hammersmith Odeon, London, England (07/11/1974-12/02/1976); The Palace Theatre, Manchester, England (07/11/1974-12/02/1976); Uhlein Hall Performing Arts Center, Milwaukee, WI (07/11/1974-12/02/1976); Volunteer Jam, The Murphy Center, Middle Tennessee Stat (07/11/1974-12/02/1976). Lyve: The Vicious Cycle Tour CD music Guitarist Gary Rossington and keyboardist Billy Powell might be the only founding members left in this incarnation of Lynyrd Skynyrd, but rest assured that the awesome legacy of these southern rock giants remains intact on VICIOUS CYCLE. Vocalist Johnnie Van Zandt continues to fill his late brother's shoes while former members of Blackfoot (Ricky Medlocke) and the Outlaws (Hughie Thomasson) keep the spirit of the South alive throughout this album released to commemorate the band's 30th anniversary. Still as down-home as when they first emerged from Jacksonville, Florida in the early '70s, the members of Skynyrd have penned songs about the working man ("That's How I Like It"), love of America ("Red White and Blue"), and the right to protect one's family ("Dead Man Walking".) Although original bassist Leon Wilkeson passed on during the recording of CYCLE, his spirit lives on via two tracks he played on before his death, the heartfelt "Lucky Man" and impassioned "The Way," and he's honored on the somber tribute "Mad Hatter." Skynyrd fan Kid Rock is the cherry on this southern rock sundae when he appears on a scathing bonus remake of the band's classic "Gimme Back My Bullets." This includes a bonus DVD disc. Dale Krantz Rossington (background vocals). Personnel: Rick Medlocke (vocals, guitar); Johnny Van Zant, Kid Rock (vocals); Rob Robinson (guitar, percussion, programming); Hughie Thomasson (guitar, background vocals); Gary Rossington, Chris Rollo (guitar); Biff Watson (acoustic guitar, bouzouki); Brent Rowan (tiple); Sam Levine (tenor saxophone); Jim Horn (baritone saxophone); Steve Patrick (trumpet); Chris Dunn (trombone); John Hobbs, Jim Hobbs (Wurlitzer organ); Billy Powell (keyboards); Greg Morrow, Michael Cartellone (drums); Eric Darken (percussion); Steve Crowder (sound effects); Dale Rossington, Carol Chase (background vocals).
