This album, first issued by ABC-Paramount, marked Cuban percussionist Candido Camero's recording debut as a leader, and while he obviously has a prominent role, these 1956 sessions represent far more than a vehicle for his conga and bongo playing. The band includes the always inspired tenor saxophonist Al Cohn, pianist Dick Katz, bassist Whitey Mitchell, guitarist Joe Puma, and drummer Ted Sommer. The selections include gems from the swing era, show tunes, and originals, all of which swing like mad. The group is at its very best in the driving "Stompin' at the Savoy," due to its inspired solos and the tradeoffs between Cohn and the leader (on bongos). Puma contributed the easygoing "Candi Bar," while Sommer's "Candido's Camera" is a snappy vehicle showcasing Candido and Al Cohn. One can easily imagine enjoying the lively interpretation of "Perdido" in a Cuban nightclub. The leader's march-like tempo introducing "Poinciana" suggests Ravel's Bolero before he relaxes his cadence into a more swinging setting. A romp through "Cheek to Cheek" provides a satisfying finale to a very enjoyable CD. Finally reissued in the summer of 2004, this remastered Verve limited edition should be considered essential for fans of Latin jazz. ~ Ken Dryden
Personnel: Candido Camero (congas, bongos); Joe Puma (guitar); Al Cohn (tenor saxophone); Dick Katz (piano); Whitey Mitchell (bass instrument); Teddy Sommer (drums).

Candido
$8.69 Gerry Mulligan's 1959 studio date with Johnny Hodges is one of the most satisfying sessions of his various meetings with different saxophonists for Verve, yet it was inexplicably the last to be made available on CD. With a hand-picked rhythm section consisting of pianist Claude Williamson, bassist Buddy Clark, and drummer Mel Lewis, and three originals contributed by each of the two leaders, everything gels nicely, though several tracks took more than three takes (in spite of liner note writer Nat Hentoff's assertions) to reach their final form. Mulligan contributed the gorgeous ballad "What's the Rush" (where he sat back to enjoy Hodges' solo and never plays his own horn), the easygoing swinger "Bunny," and the brisk cooker "18 Carrots (For Rabbit)," the latter which its composer would revisit with his Concert Jazz Band. The veteran alto saxophonist contributed the low-key ballad "Shady Side," the sassy blues "Back Beat" (later re-recorded by Hodges during a still unreleased 1960 studio meeting with Ben Webster), and "What It's All About," another potent blues. Throughout the date, the two saxophonists blend beautifully and complement one another's efforts, even though this was their only opportunity to record together in the studio. Sadly, no alternate takes or unissued numbers (at least two of which exist) have been added to this long anticipated reissue. ~ Ken Dryden

| | Yusef Lateef Golden Flute CD (1966) Remastered; Digipak
Candido
$9.89 The emphasis is on older tunes and styles on this Yusef Lateef Impulse! album. Lateef (switching between tenor, flute, and oboe) plays such numbers as "Straighten Up and Fly Right," "Ghost of a Chance," "Exactly like You" (on oboe), and "Rosetta" along with some group originals. Lateef has long been a true original, and he revitalizes the standards while always swinging and being a bit unpredictable. Well worth searching for, this was Lateef's final Impulse! album before switching to Atlantic. ~ Scott Yanow
Recorded at Van Gelder Recording Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey in June 1966. Originally released on Impulse (9125).
Personnel: Yusef Lateef (tenor saxophone, flute, oboe); Hugh Lawson (piano); Herman Wright (bass); Roy Brooks, Jr. (drums).
| | Dave Pike Manhattan Latin CD (1964) Remastered; Digipak
Candido
$8.05 Manhattan Latin captures Dave Pike in flux between the straight-ahead approach of his earlier sessions and the psychedelic pop-jazz of his efforts for MPS: a playful yet methodical immersion into pure, sunkissed groove, its artful assimilation of global rhythms and textures anticipates the direction of Pike's most memorable work. Recorded with an impressive lineup including flautist Hubert Laws, drummer Willie Bobo and then-unknown pianist Chick Corea, the album largely eschews familiar Latin standards in favor of Pike originals. What's impressive is that the end result seems completely organic, living up to the album's title in terms of both sophistication and flavor. Phenomenal cover, too. ~ Jason Ankeny
Personnel: Dave Pike (vibraphone); Attila Zoller (guitar); Joseph Grimaldi (flute); Hubert Laws (piccolo, tenor saxophone); Dave Burns (trumpet); Ray Copeland (flugelhorn); Chick Corea, Don Friedman (piano); Israel "Cachao" Lopez, Jack Six (bass instrument); Willie Bobo (drums).
| | Ahmad Jamal Chamber Music Of The New Jazz CD (1955) Reissue; Remastered; Digipak
Candido
$9.19 Verve should be endlessly praised for reissuing superb albums like Ahmad Jamal's CHAMBER MUSIC OF THE NEW JAZZ on CD, bringing them back into commercial circulation so that jazz fans old and new can experience (or re-experience) their splendor. While the set list of 1955's CHAMBER MUSIC may appear standard, with treatments of "It Ain't Necessarily So" and "A Foggy Day" (Jamal's fine original "New Rumba" is the exception), there is nothing "standard" about this excellent session, in conception, sound, or execution.
Both "chamber music" and "the new jazz" are appropriate appellations. The simultaneously stark/lush trio format--which features Jamal's piano in deep conversation with Israel Crosby's bass and Ray Crawford's guitar--gives the music a cerebral, floating feel. (Oddly enough, the drummerless background actually highlights the rhythmic intensity of each musician's playing--especially Crawford's pizzicato guitar work). The music also differentiates itself from the hard bop of the time in managing to merge advanced, complex playing with an exquisite sensitivity to dynamics and delicacy of mood. On each of these nine compositions, the musicians play with understated intensity, often using space as a rhythmic element (as on the interlude to "Darn That Dream").
Recording information: Chicago, IL (05/23/1955).
Personnel: Ahmad Jamal (piano); Ahmad Jamal; Israel Crosby (bass instrument); Ray Crawford (guitar).
Liner Note Author: Herbert Lust.
| | Dizzy Gillespie Sittin' In CD (1957) Reissue; Remastered; Digipak
Candido
$9.89 The music blends West Coast cool, swing, bop, and hard-bop styles in a manner befitting each of the monumental leaders, and the whole is driven by a spry rhythm section consisting of bassist Wendell Marshall, drummer J.C. Heard, and pianist Wynton Kelly. Aficionados will relish the opportunity to identify the solos and styles of each player--Getz's cool complexity, Gillespie's athleticism, Gonsalves's unique lyricism, and Hawkins's pioneering technique and tone. SITTIN' IN is a superb slice of bop history, starring some of the most influential figures in the evolution of jazz.
SITTIN' IN is a jazz lover's dream come true. On this historic session, recorded in the summer of 1957, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Coleman Hawkins, and Paul Gonsalves got together to create one of the most formidable frontlines ever captured on tape. The program, which includes "Dizzy Atmosphere," the chestnut "The Way You Look Tonight," and two lengthy ballad medleys, lets each horn player take a turn in the spotlight.
