| | 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Eric Clapton CD Eric Clapton Discography of CDs
(3 Customer Reviews)
This 20TH CENTURY MASTERS collection culls Eric Clapton's biggest hits from three extremely successful 1970s solo releases--his self-titled debut, 461 OCEAN BOULEVARD, and SLOWHAND. The breezy melancholy of "Promises," from '78s BACKLESS, and two cuts from LAYLA AND OTHER ASSORTED LOVE SONGS (recorded with Clapton's short-lived group Derek & the Dominos), including the epic "Layla," round out the set.
Clapton's readings of two J.J. Cale songs, the creepy rocker "Cocaine" and the celebratory foot-stomper "After Midnight," are definitive FM fare, as is the smooth and easy, country-inflected "Lay Down Sally," complete with its irresistible, honky-tonk guitar lick. Treatments of Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" and Bob Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff" reinforce Clapton's penchant for faithful, heartfelt covers accented by his understated singing and matchless, fluid guitar work. Appearances by Leon Russell, Stephen Stills, and Rita Coolidge boost the already top-notch caliber of musicianship here. While classic-rock completists will want to own the individual records these singles appeared on, this BEST OF provides a concise roundup of the guitar legend's key '70s studio performances.

This is an outstanding arrangement of song selection, artest, backup support. However, I purchased the latest EC cd and it was cheap with shortcut artest and poor or no backup. I can.t believe EC allowed it to have his name on it. Submitted by mattsumi2 (La Crescenta, CA. USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Excellent Compilation There are a few songs missing ("Tears in Heaven" is a major one), but overall, a good selection. Note: "Layla" was recorded by Derek and the Dominos, which Eric Clapton fronted. If they didn't put Cream in here, then Layla and other assorted love songs don't belong either. Submitted by J.J. (Oregon, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Eric Clapton songs
$9.69 Nights Are Forever was the breakthrough album for Dan Seals and John Coley after some sincere and excellent work on A&M Records in the early '70s. Two of their biggest hits were the title track and the beautiful "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight." Those songs are a good indication of the fine performances this 1976 album contains. The duo's originals like "Long Way Home" and the Dan Fogelberg-ish "Westward Wind" could have been hits as well displaying superb musicianship and delicate vocals. This album is ...
| | England Dan Dr. Heckle & Mr. Jive CD (1978) Reissued
20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Eric Clapton album
$9.55 The sincerity of their days on A&M Records has turned to total formula by the time Dr. Heckyl & Mr. Jive came around -- and Robert Louis Stevenson expert, author Ray McNally, makes it clear in his book on Mr. Hyde that the true pronunciation is Dr. Jeekill (as in, "I Kill and Hide"). It is quite a paradox that this justified attack on the Hollywood system uses the mispronunciation of this famous title which Hollywood forced upon the world. Were these singers that clever to have slipped this in as a sly parody? Probably not -- because the sentiment in the poem here is right on, ...
| | England Dan Some Things Don't Come Easy CD (1978)
20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Eric Clapton CD music
$10.65 If Dowdy Ferry Road was their bleak moment in song, Some Things Don't Come Easy is the calm before the storm, a port prior to the schizophrenia that was Dr. Heckyll and Mr. Jive. Wandering songs like "Who's Lonely Now" are indicative of this album, and it is only one of two titles the singers pen together. They look alike on the smiling, happy airbrushed front cover, but you can almost see sadness in their eyes on the photos on the back. It must have been an intense period as they came up with yet another Top Ten hit, their fifth of six. "We'll Never Have to Say Goodbye Again" ...

| | String Cheese Incident Breathe CD (1999)
20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Eric Clapton songs
$12.89 Keller Williams employed the help of the String Cheese Incident on his eclectic and enchanting Breathe album. Recorded in just ten days, it's swollen with impeccable musical talent and artistry. Williams manages to traverse various styles within a single track, while maintaining the same smooth Zen-like vibe regardless of the featured genre. Songs like the Phish-esque "Stupid Questions" and "Best Feeling" personify his ability to incorporate jazz, folk, reggae, and bluegrass with a Latin jam-band tinge. On "Blatant Ripoff" he uses a mouth fluegel to mimic the sound of a trumpet, which drives the song and replaces any necessity for lyrics. The ...
| | Foil Never Got Hip CD (2000)
20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Eric Clapton album
$10.95 Well-named, this LP, much more so than its predecessor. The Scotland four's smashing 1998 debut Spread It All Around was virtually spread nowhere. "Never Got Hip?" More like "Never Got Heard." If I told you to go out and get some Foil, you'd come back with some Reynolds Wrap for sure. And for the second straight time, that's unfair. Even without the great Paul Tipler to assist them this time, Foil still storm, right from the crunching backbeat intro of the opening title track, laying on the riffs thick, tight, powerful, and tempestuous. The backing guitar leads soar, the bass rumbles, the drums thunder, and the entire post-punk beast is revived in all its ornery grandeur. Best ...

20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Eric Clapton CD music
$16.29 Recorded live at Life Cafe, Liverpool, England on December 13 & 14, 1999.
Ian McNabb's Live at Life is a pretty barebones affair -- just McNabb and his guitar recorded live at Liverpool's Life Café over two nights in December of 1999. It was originally released as a fan-club-only item in 2000 before being picked up for general release by Sanctuary/Castle ...
