It's no surprise that this album can be recommended to Incredible String fans, as it features singer-guitarist Clive Palmer, who was part of the ISB on their debut LP. It's less expected, however, that the album can also be recommended to British folk-rock fans who might not necessarily be enamored of the Incredible String Band. It's low-key, almost to the point of being subdued, and melodic British folk with that quasi-psychedelic mystical tinge characteristic of ISB. Yet the vocals are more tuneful and soothing -- if, undeniably, less adventurous. The arrangements are nicely varied, too, something else that sets this apart from the standard British folk record. The embellishments from John Bidwell's dulcitar, Indian hand organ, and recorder -- as well as occasional cello, haunting vocal harmonies, and the clever a cappella trio vocals of "Wade in the Water" -- play a large part in the record's modest triumph. The album has been reissued on CD by the mysterious Lady Eleanore label (catalog # 100LE 201). ...

Vanity of Sounds was originally released in 2000, as disc one of the ten-CD box set Contemporary Works I. SPV's Revisited subsidiary gave it its first single release in 2005, early in its career-encompassing reissue program of Klaus Schulze's discography. The album consists in four long pieces (between 15 and 23 minutes each). Compared to the four-volume Ballett series (also taken from the Contemporary Works I box set), the music here is more consistent and closer to Schulze's long-established sound -- no Arabic influences here, no techno episodes. In fact, Vanity of Sounds marks a return to an earlier sound, closer to Dreams and Miditerranean Pads, or even Dig It. The pieces are long and slow-evolving as usual, and sequenced as if forming four movements of a single continuous 78-minute work, an impression strengthened by the reappearance of sounds or figures from one track to another (for instance, the Gregorian chant embedded in "Sacred Romance" briefly resurfaces at the end of "The Wings of Strings"; the vocoder voice providing the backbone of "From Words to Silence" had been glimpsed in "Vanity of Sounds"). "Vanity of Sounds" and "The Wings of Strings" are the best tracks from this set, the first one a typical Schulze workout, the other a slightly edgier piece. "Sacred Romance" milks its motive and Gregorian mood dry rather quickly. Without being a true highlight, "From Words to Silence" surprises with its dub feel -- is this the result of a Bill Laswell influence picked up from the Dark Side of the Moog collaborative series? Although much is made of this Utah foursome's rebellious background (singer Bert McCracken's former drug addiction and the band's pre-record deal pan-handling street-kid lifestyle), all that's really required to ascertain the level of the band's commitment is a close listen to their self-titled debut release. They leap into each song as though their lives depended upon it (maybe they're not so anxious to go back to spare-changing). While they are initially presented as another entrant in the aggro-rock sweepstakes, there's a bit more than that to the Used. Sure, McCracken can let out blood-curdling screams of angst with the best of them, and there's no shortage of blazing guitars and pounding drums, but the Used seem to have spent at least as much time listening to Jane's Addiction as they have to the Deftones. The band's range is made most clear by the acoustic-guitar-and-strings ballad "On My Own" and the melodic piano motif at the end of the closing song "Pieces Mended."

Stingy Brim puts the tuba back in the jazz spotlight as Johnnie Valentino commemorates the 100th anniversary of the tuba's demise as the keeper of the bassline in jazz. The composer/guitarist Johnnie Valentino rights the wrong with this unchained, funky, toe-tapping tuba-organ quintet, full of catchy, irresistibly grooving tunes and propelled by New Orleans' second-line backbeat and Philly swagger. Valentino also features the clarinet and accordion (represented here by harmonium), both of which experienced a decline in use in many modern jazz ensembles. The title track, "Stingy Brim," opens with a swinging synchronized head before segueing into creative improvisations and solos from Valentino and drummer Mark Ferber before returning to repeat the head. "Dog Eggs" features the bouncy beats of the tuba and the clarinet in harmony to create an almost comedic sound at the open before Valentino polishes it with funky riffs, tones, and shapes that complement the happiness of the instruments. "Return," a blues with an ethereal quality to it, features electronic fills, organ, and harmonium interpretations that add extra dimensions to the featured tuba soloing of Randy Johnson. This is one of the "mo better blues" on the CD! "Stone Balloons" is an excellent vehicle for clarinetist Bob Sheppard, who is paired with Randy Jones. Together they rise to a sonic plateau that has the listener hanging on to their level of collaboration. Sheppard's soloing is impeccable here, as is his saxophone solo on "Where, When & How."
