| | Old School Nation! CD (1 Customer Review)
Old School Nation serves up 2CDs packed with the biggest and phattest old school and freestyle jams all in their original, full-length 12” versions! Never before have so many of these extended mixes appeared on one package.
Awful graphic design and a blatant attempted swipe of the Thump label's thunder (see their excellent Old School compilations), Hi Bias' Old School Nation! is a remarkably strong, if safe, set of popular club music released from the late '70s through the early '90s. Most of the tracks have appeared on dozens upon dozens of other like-themed discs, but this is a good resource if you need more than a handful of them. Highlights include Nu Shooz's "I Can't Wait," Planet Patrol's "Play at Your Own Risk," Patrice Rushen's "Forget Me Nots," Tom Tom Club's "Genius of Love," Starpoint's "Object of My Desire," and J.J. Fad's "Supersonic." Another positive: the superior extended versions are favored over the single and album edits. ~ Andy Kellman

| | AZ Doe Or Die CD (1995)
Old School Nation! CD music
$9.99 All songs written by AZ except "Sugar Hill" (AZ/U. Barnes/K. Barnes) and "Mo Money Mo Murder (Homicide)" (AZ/NAS). Samples include "Little Children" (as performed by Kool And The Gang), "Just Rhymin With Biz" (as performed by Big Daddy Kane), "Here We Go" (as performed by Minnie Riperton) and "Cry Together" (as performed by The O'Jays).
Though the music industry is flooded with rappers of all shapes, sizes and traits, only a handful are recognized for their lyrical skills. AZ establishes his ground among them with his debut DOE OR DIE, a follow-up to one well-recognized appearence on Nas' ILLMATIC ("Life's a bitch and then you die...").
DOE OR DIE is AZ's first step towards a lifestyle free from the society he was born into. "Sugar Hill" reveals his dreams of sipping champagne and living the good life, without being subject to the horrors of the urban streets. While his political beliefs constantly mingle with his message, AZ openly expresses the opinions of his community--most specifically on "We Can't Win." And on "Mo Money, Mo Murder (Homicide)," he's joined by his Queens-counterpart Nas for a double-dose of unique, metaphorical rhymes.
Musically, DOE OR DIE matches up to AZ's lyrical abilities, and when his vocals are laid over Pete Rock-produced tracks ("Rather Unique" and "Gimme Your's"), it is hip-hop at its best. With little room for another street-life representative preaching about money, women and clothes, rap does have the space for this East New York native's abstract concepts, on-going rhyming style and Master-Don attitude.
In 1995 it was easy to confuse comrades and collaborators Nas and AZ, so similar in style were their street-schooled lyrical concerns and their austere, lazy-eyed rhyming styles. AZ, in fact, first came to the attention of the rap scene by contributing a verse to the former's classic 1994 single "Life's a Bitch." To compound the resemblance, he called upon Pete Rock to produce a couple tracks ("Gimme Your's" and "Rather Unique," both stellar) on this introductory recording, just as Nas had on his classic debut. The two albums are very much the twin sides of the same double-headed coin. They are so closely connected, in fact, that it's difficult to pinpoint where Doe or Die's points of departure are located. Many of its character sketches (the Buckwild-produced "Ho Happy Jack"), urban-caked admonitions ("Mo Money Mo Murder," on which Nas, in fact, turns up to ...
| | Tarentel From Bone To Satellite CD (1999)
Old School Nation! music CDs
$12.49 In the late 1990s during Tarentel's genesis it wouldn't have been a stretch to classify them along with the myriad other producers of what would become known, as is usual with music clichés, pretentiously and inadequately, as post-rock. That they would evolve so far beyond their rock-like origins only serves to illuminate the limitations of classifying music of any sort into genres. Be that as it may, we have to call it something and as such, Tarentel's first full-length is an epic of a post-rock album. The title From Bone to Satellite is an obvious reference to man's evolution, and as this is indeed an ever-evolving band; this document is an accurate representation of the band during its formative years. Which is not to say it lacks sophistication; however, the prehistoric blunt-edge tools found here are of more primitive application in carving out more traditional rock structures than the high-minded abstractions that would be achieved in the band's subsequent years. But within all of Tarentel's work lies a common method and goal: the use of repetition to create a transcendental state of mind. "Steede Bonnet" opens with a 12-minute descending guitar figure and a slow build that rivals the tension and release of Godspeed You Black Emperor! minus the string section. With its floating spaghetti western motif and glorious climax it embodies the very meaning of psychedelic music. It flows right into "When We Almost Killed Ourselves" ...
| | Ice Cube Lethal Injection CD (1993) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Old School Nation! songs
$9.99 In 1993, Ice Cube released his third solo album, LETHAL INJECTION. By this time, the dominance of the West Coast rap scene had started to fade, as East Coast hip-hop artists like the Wu Tang Clan and the Notorious B.I.G. started to pull listeners away from the left coast. Hanging tough, Ice Cube released another masterful performance with LETHAL INJECTION. Tracks like "You Know How We Do It" and "Ghetto Bird" are deep-rooted in the classic West Coast sound and bounce. Filled with funk and smooth synth pads, LETHAL INJECTION is an album sometimes overlooked in the lengthy career of Ice Cube. Check out "Bop Gun (One Nation)," on which funk master George Clinton himself makes an appearance. Some of the album's other excellent tracks include "Make It Ruff, Make It Smooth" (featuring K-Dee), "Really Doe," and "Down for Whatever."
