Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson recently told a publication that "history is the one thing that hip-hop audiences have utter contempt for." Mash Out Posse are clearly counting on this sentiment to hold true, lest some MTV shorties call them out for biting Ice-T's steez la Body Count. Heck, most of these kids probably won't even remember Limp Bizkit's melding of metal and rap, which puts MOP in a pretty strong position with these hard rock reworkings of classic tracks and some originals that don't do much lyrically past Lil' Fame and Billy Danzenie's well-established tough-guy party boasts and whose riffs barely cross into the '90s, let alone the current millennium. And it goes from ill-advised to pure catastrophe on "Fire," which climbs to the heights of metal ridicule with a falsetto chorus and sick-cat screeches by the supposed "street poets" at work here. At least the Posse are stand-up enough to subtitle "Hilltop Flava" "No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn," which is where the song parrots its riff and chorus. But rappers paying tribute to rappers who paid tribute to metal is just too convoluted to be considered the next step after Run-D.M.C. did Aerosmith's "Walk This Way." Especially in this post-Puffy "why even bother to write your own song when there were so many in the '80s to bite" world. ~ Joshua Glazer

| | Tamla Motown: Big Hits & Hard To Find Classics, Vol. 4 CD (2002) Import
Mash Out Posse songs
$9.79 The hit factory that was Motown (and its Tamla branch) in the 1960s released many records that became hits and even classics, while a few worthy one fell through the cracks, were regional hits, or hits in Europe only. The fourth volume in a series, BIG HITS & HARD TO FIND, unearths these gems for collectors and casual fans alike!
Tamla Motown Big Hits & Hard to Find Classics, Vol. 4 is a 20-track reminder that Motown's beauty is more than skin deep. Of the artists here, only a couple (Marvin Gaye and the Marvelettes) are names the casual Motown fan might recognize. The rest are complete nobodies like Rick Robin and Him, the Elgins, and Terry Johnson, collector's darlings like Chris Clark and Barbara Randolph, or oddities like the San Remo Strings, the Hit Pack, or Paul Petersen (the kid from The Donna Reed Show of all places). Now that the proper amount of obscurity has been established, the real question is how do the tunes stack up to the well-known Motown classics? Favorably. The record is loaded with tracks that could have easily stormed the charts if given the right exposure. Eddie Holland's sweet 1961 love song "Jamie," Marv Johnson's storming Temptations-style rocker from 1966 "I Miss You Baby ...
