Closed Captioned; Standard Screen; Soundtrack English; English Subtitles Tod Browning's cult classic about the close-knit world of carnival performers and sideshow "freaks." One of the midgets in the show falls for a beautiful acrobat, and is overjoyed when she agrees to marry him. But her apparent affection is merely a cover for her sinister plans, which lead to a horrifying conclusion. Not for everyone's tastes, but there are scenes of immense power that stand-up strongly to modern "shock" pictures.
When released theatrically in 1932, FREAKS was met with near universal disgust by critics and audiences alike, lasting in theatres for only a short time in the states and banned in England. The film stars Harry Earles as Hans, a suave midget who belongs to the sideshow of a seedy circus and who makes the mistake of falling in love with the beautiful Cleopatra, one of the "normal" circus performers. Learning that Hans is about to inherit a fortune, Cleopatra agrees to marry Hans even though she abhors him, planning to steal his money and get rid of him. When the freaks of the circus, who keep a watchful eye on Cleopatra, discover her scheme, they plan to exact an unforgettable revenge.
Far more unsettling than Browning's best known horror film, DRACULA, FREAKS has long been neglected due to its subject matter, even though it is a genuinely effective film. Gripping and often creepy, FREAKS manages to humanize its main performers, even looking at them with a sense of awe. By contrast, the "normal" performers in the film are largely hateful creatures who turn out to be much more repellant than their deformed colleagues. Both an excellent horror film and a unique look at the lives of sideshow performers, FREAKS is a chilling movie whose final ten minutes are some of the most harrowing in all of cinema. FREAKS was added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 1994.
Rated BBFC 15 by the British Board of Film Classification. Freaks Reviews: "...[FREAKS] has the true compassion of an insider's vision..."
-- Andy Richards, Total Film "...Even now it's hard not to jolted by the sight of real-life sideshow performers..."
-- Entertainment Weekly Staff, Entertainment Weekly "FREAKS has a mythic and compelling narrative....Unforgettable by the end."
-- Premiere Staff, Premiere "Over the years FREAKS has grown in reputation and now is considered one of the most remarkable films of the 1930s."-- Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times "Completely unique."
-- Peter Hogan, Uncut "One of the strangest films ever made by a major Hollywood studio..."
-- Geoffrey Macnab, Sight and Sound

Freaks is fantastic Its strange that this film was looked upon as just an effort in exploitation when released, as looking at this masterpiece by Tod Browning now, its impossible not to see just how much heart this film has. It is a spectacular film, given a fantastic dvd release, and is instantly now one of my all-time favourites! Look out for the amazing rain-soaked finale! Bizarro world!! I loved this movie. I used to miss it and see pieces of it on TNT. But to now own it and to know the history of the movie via Special FEatures. It's a treat.
To me this movie is a perfect example of never trust a book by it's cover.
The freaks in this movie has better souls then the so called "normals". The story is simplist, it's about love and how the love for a person can make you blind to who you are and to the situation around you. Making you an easy target for any type of play.
This is a movie I think any goth or wannabe Uniquist would love .

$10.29 Don Siegel's cult masterpiece, interpreted as an allegory of both McCarthyism and Communism, is undoubtedly one of the screen's most disturbing evocations of paranoia. It stars Kevin McCarthy as Dr. Miles Binnell, a physician whose traumatized arrival in the emergency room of a San Francisco hospital leads the staff to believe he's lost his mind. In a series of flashbacks, he unwinds a bizarre account of his last few days. After his return from a trip to rural Santa Mira, his nurse, Sally (Jean Willes), explains that his office has been flooded with patients who have made appointments yet never appeared. Former girlfriend Becky Driscoll (Dana Wynter) tells him that she's unable to rid herself of the belief that the man claiming to be her uncle is an impostor. A hysterical young boy refuses to return home, claiming that his mother is not his mother. Miles's concern over this pattern of incidents, temporarily allayed by some jargon from the town psychiatrist, is newly aroused when he gets a phone call from friend Jack Belicec (King Donovan), who begs him to come over and take a look at the strange mannequinlike figure that's suddenly appeared on his pool table. This exceptionally well written and directed fable, the ultimate comment on the subtly coercive conformity of the 1950s, may be Siegel's best film, and it is undoubtedly one of the most exciting science fiction films ever made.

Angry and confused, Van starts hanging out with a couple of local punks and then meets Doug (Lowe), who appears to have everything Van dreams of. However, Van soon learns that the seemingly perfect Doug has some demons of his own, ones that eerily echo Van's.

| | Washington Square DVD (1997) Widescreen
Freaks movie DVD
$6.89 Henry James's biting novel WASHINGTON SQUARE is given a lush adaptation from acclaimed director Agnieszka Holland (EUROPA EUROPA), buoyed by sharp performances from its cast. The story concerns Austin Sloper (Albert Finney), a wealthy, widowed doctor who is unable to hide his disdain for his plain, shrinking violet daughter, Catherine (Jennifer Jason Leigh). When Morris Townsend (Ben Chaplin) enters her life--a charming, but penniless, suitor--Austin's lack of faith in his daughter's ability to charm convinces him that Morris's intentions are only mercenary. Catherine doesn't take kindly to her stern father's restrictions and continues the relationship, assisted by her romantically inclined dowager aunt, Lavinia Penniman (Maggie Smith).
With WASHINGTON SQUARE, Holland adds another cinematic genre, American period drama, to her impressive resume. Working with production designer Allan Starski and costume designer Anna Sheppard, Holland recreates Victorian-era New York City with a visual beauty that belies the film's sharp dramatic edge. Featuring standout performances by an all-star cast (notably Leigh, Finney, Chaplin, and Smith), WASHINGTON SQUARE is a memorable work from the versatile director.

$8.49 Two insane nudie-cowboy movies to tantalize the inner-outlaw in you, including:
THE RAMRODDER: Produced by the notorious David F. Friedman, follow the tender tale of Cowpoke Rick (A.K.A. The Ramrodder) as he falls for Indian maiden Tuwana. Just as The Ramrodder starts to live up to his name Tuwana's tribe become perturbed by a kidnapping, with Cowpoke Rick being named the most likely suspect. They kidnap Rick's ex-girlfriend - who smooths things over with an impromptu strip-show for the tribe - and the pressure turns to Tuwana to prove Cowpoke's innocence. With plenty of nudity, lesbianism, whipping and virgin-testing, this has all the ingredients of a classic western!
