After a seven year absence from the recording scene (although they did continue to perform), Kate & Anna McGarrigle returned with HEARTBEATS ACCELERATING. Recorded in their home base of Montreal with their usual array of accompanists, it's perhaps their most contemporary-sounding work, production-wise. A song like Kate's "Mother Mother" is unmistakably based in the McGarrigle sisters's rich heritage, yet the track comfortably accepts up-to-date flourishes like drum programming and synthesized bass (alongside accordion and acoustic guitars). Their earlier attempt at "modernizing" resulted in the unsuccessful (critically and commercially) PRONTO MONTO--their only album to not be reissued on CD. This time they seem driven by real and internal desires to embrace all of these sounds, rather than by pressures to fit into the marketplace in a predictable manner. The use of various technologies and electronics never overwhelms the outstanding songs; HEARTBEATS ACCELERATING is another high caliber work from these Canadian sisters.
Or. Release '90, their first one in eight years , adopting a more new-age sound, with extensive synthesizer programming. The sound may be lush and modern, but the sentiments are still deeply felt and the observations remain laser-sharp.

Rolling Stone (11/15/90) - 3.5 Stars - Very Good Plus New York Times (Publisher) (11/18/90) - "..the sisters have made a bold and successful acknowledgment of contemporary developments by introducing computerized elements into their music, which is at once gripping and bleak.." Heartbeats Accelerating album
$10.45 "Here In Angola," "Pandora," and "Indian Summer" were originally released on the LP INDIAN SUMMER.
24 CARROTS is folk-rocker Al Stewart's 1980 album, recorded with Shot in the Dark. This reissue features five bonus tracks, "Here in Angola", "Indian Summer", "Pandora", "Delia's Gone", and "Princess Olivia".
The pun of the title of 24 Carrots -- the first overt signal of humor Al Stewart has displayed in years, possibly ever -- illustrates that a lot has changed since 1978's Time Passages. The loosening of his wit is perhaps the most evident, but the most significant is the departure of producer Alan Parsons, who collaborated with Stewart on his mid-'70s triptych of masterpieces. In truth, 24 Carrots isn't far removed from those high points, because he is indeed still writing at a remarkably consistent pace. No, this record isn't quite at ...

| | Stevie Nicks Soundstage Sessions CD (2009)
Heartbeats Accelerating album
$15.89 Rock's original gold dust woman capped a return to the road in the '00s with this stunningly on-point live collection--her first. With tracks taken from a live set in Chicago in October 2007 and later bolstered by overdubs from a Nashville session (essentially studio strings and backing vocals), THE SOUNDSTAGE SESSIONS matches the energy of a hot live set with pristine studio touches. Nicks concentrates mostly on her solo material (there are only two ...
| | Doors Soft Parade CD (1969) Gold; Remastered
Heartbeats Accelerating CD music
$20.29 Dismissed by the benighted as the Doors' "pop album," SOFT PARADE is one of the band's most adventurous recordings, utilizing strings and horns without resorting to schlocky over-production and moving far beyond their blues roots. Morrison was fully into his shaman phase by 1969, and his obsession with that image is reflected in the proselytizing air of "Tell All the People," and of course "Shaman's Blues." The album's biggest hit "Touch Me," while easily the group's most radio-friendly offering, is a pop classic that ranks among the great ...

| | Bad Company In Concert: Merchants Of Cool. CD (2002)
Heartbeats Accelerating songs
$9.99 Principally recorded live at The Paramount Theater, Denver, Colorado; The Grove Of Anaheim, Anaheim, California, in January 2002.
Oddly enough, on this 2002 live recording by Bad Company, vocalist Paul Rodgers sounds younger than he ever has on record. And no, that's not necessarily a good thing. Bad Company's original members number two: Rodgers and drummer Simon Kirke; bassist Jaz Lochrie and guitarist Dave Colwell have replaced Boz Burrell and Mick Ralphs, who were smart enough to bail after the obligatory reunion tour that resulted in a previous live album. True enough, Bad Company was once able to inspire legions of rock fans with their melodic, memorable, tough, and lean bluesy paeans to lovers, losers, gamblers, and ramblers, and one would hope that even with a new lineup some of that inspiration and fire remained. But those days are long, long gone. One wonders why anyone, even a die-hard fan, would appreciate this tired, plodding, going-through-the-motions set of hits. The singalong on "Can't Get Enough" is nauseating, and the redone "Feel Like Makin' Love" sounds like a cover band in a bar doing Bad Company songs. This should have been called Former Merchants of Cool Ready for the Old Rock Stars' Home. ~ Thom Jurek
Sanctuary's 2002 release In Concert: Merchants of Cool captures a latter-day lineup of Bad Company ...
| | Poison Idea Blank Blackout Vacant CD (1992) Reissue
Heartbeats Accelerating album
$10.19 All songs written by members of Poison Idea except "Vietnamese Baby" (Johansen).
Though not quite the shotgun blast of an album that its predecessor, Feel the Darkness, was, Blank Blackout Vacant is nonetheless an ample testimony to Poison Idea's unbridled power and force. Suffused with enough hate, pain, and rage to fuel an entire army, Jerry A.'s vocals, positively dripping with bile and venom, certainly cement his ideas with passion and force. "Understated" is not a word that is possible to use with this band. Poison Idea, from their inception in the very early '80s through ...
