This Paris Opera production of Rameau’s burlesque on the vicissitudes of love, is a “pure joy from start to splashing finish” (Wall Street Journal Europe). “Laurent Pelly’s staging of Plat‚e is an exhilarating display of gags and West Side Story dance routines mixed in with satirical rap...Marc Minkowski conducting the excellent Musiciens du Louvre-Grenoble was the instigator of a sparkling orchestral fˆte (Opera Now). LA PLATEE is a French Baroque opera, often called a "ballet bouffant," that challenges all preconceived notions of opera in a delightfully irreverent, anachronistic manner. The story revolves around a scheme devised by the gods to punish the ceaselessly jealous Juno by creating the illusion of an affair between her husband, Jupiter, and Platea, an ugly little frog who fruitlessly attempts to seduce anyone she encounters. Cruelly convinced by the gods that she has finally found true love, Platea and Jupiter go through the motions of a mock courtship and wedding, only for Juno to raise her veil and recognize the joke; poor Platea becomes the laughingstock of the country. This production by the Paris Opera proves an engaging romp, with a spectacular amalgam of styles ranging from hip hop to West Side Story Platee | List Price | $29.95 (You save $9.96) | | Studio | Kultur Films Inc. | | Orig Year | 2004 | | All Time Sales Rank | 23441 | | CD Universe Part number | 6740994 | | Catalog number | 2919 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Jul 27, 2004 | | Rating | Not Rated | | Also Known As | Platee | | Movie Details | Color; Digitally Processed |
Platee Movie Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) Pure delight Those who are familiar with Rameau's amazing music will know how uplifting and joyous it is. This production of his comic opera, Platee is that, and much more. From the open shot of Marc Minkowski's impish grin as he conducts the orchestra in the Overture, to the final moment as Platee makes her dramatic exit, you are transported into another world which is pure delight for the 2 hours plus you spend there. The costumes, the set, the performances, (especially that of Paul Agnew in the leading role and Mirielle Delunsch as Folly )and the choreography, are lively, colorful and faultless. The action and excitement builds throughout and you are left wanting more. Probably the most enjoyable theatrical experience you will ever have. I know it was for me. Have your chidren discover opera ... My children (5 and 7 years) spent hours looking at this opera I had recorded on a VHS.
They enjoy it now more and more as they are able to read the sub titles and have a better understanding of the story.
It is a very good way to help them appreciate opera.

$23.39 Ingmar Bergman has stated that THE MAGIC FLUTE had long since been an inspiration to him by the time he directed this movie version of an actual staging of Mozart's opera. In Emanuel Schikaneder's libretto--performed here in Swedish instead of German--Prince Tamino (Josef Köstlinger) is sent by the mysterious and powerful Queen of the Night (Birgit Nordin) to rescue her daughter, Pamina (Irma Urrila), from the sorcerer Sarastro (Ulrik Cold), who has kidnapped the girl. Tamino is aided on his mission by the bird catcher Papageno (Håkan Hagegård), an endearing buffoon (and arguably the opera's most popular character) who wants nothing more than to find himself a loving wife. The director presents a shortened version of the story, enhanced with a Freudian plot element (of sorts), while also giving the piece a slight overhaul for a more modern, less politically questionable feel. Bergman shows the goings-on onstage, often zooming in for close-ups of the performers' interaction with one another, interspersed with shots of individual faces in the audience. The actors were mostly chosen for their appearance and stage presence rather than ...

$13.05 Gay Republicans were faced with a difficult challenge in the election of 2004, when the intolerance of the Republican incumbent George W. Bush placed them in direct opposition to their party loyalty. Log Cabin, the gay Republican club which has been in operation since 1977, was put under the spotlight during the days leading up to the election, as Bush's well-established position on the issue of gay marriage denies them their civil rights. Faced with a difficult decision between their politics and their personal lives, various members of the community took diverging paths in their attempts to follow what they thought was right. This documentary follows a group of Log Cabin members as they attempt to parse their own path on the way to "Decision 2004," in a process by turns moving, humorous, and politically prescient.
After years of relative obscurity, Log Cabin - the gay Republican club formed in California in 1977 - has found itself in the national spotlight. George Bush's unequivocal opposition to gay marriage put them at the forefront of one of the most hotly contested elections in years. With the issue of whether or not to support ...
