Although former Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson strayed away from the harder-edged nuances of his previous gig with his debut solo album, NEW EARTH MUD, his sophomore outing, THIS MAGNIFICENT DISTANCE, finds him plugging in and rocking out. Paul Stacey returns from the first record and is joined by Robinson's guitar-wielding former Crowes bandmate Audley Freed. Robinson fans yearning for the more upbeat side of the Georgia native's musical side won't be disappointed. From the churning "40 Days," with its mix of choppy riffing and prominent organ lines, to the thunderous stomp of "Sea of Love," heads will be bobbing and toes will be tapping throughout.
Keyboardists George Laks and Richard Causon fill in well for Crowes ivory-tickler Eddie Harsch, providing a sweeping style that fits in perfectly with the Western themes of bank robbers and big-sky imagery dotting "Train Robbers" and "Like a Tumbleweed in Eden." Robinson's greatest inspiration stems from his new home on the West Coast, and this comes across beautifully on "If You See California," a gorgeous love letter to the Golden State basted in a righteous mix of piano, acoustic guitar, and soulful phrasing.
Chris Robinson: Chris Robinson (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Paul Stacey (guitar); George Laks (keyboards); George Reiff (bass instrument); Jeremy Stacey (drums, percussion).
Additional personnel: Audley Freed (guitar); Richard Causon (keyboards); Ethan Johns (drums).Mojo (Publisher) (p.89) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[T]his collection of songs is still mythic in scope; wide, sprawling, often anxious canvases...with rebel-hearted romanticism, promises of social insurrection, and weary stream-of-consciousness confessionals..." | | Rich Robinson Paper CD (2004)
This Magnificent Distance
$9.55 If you listened to Paper, the first solo album by former Black Crowes guitarist Rich Robinson without knowing who it was, it'd be easy to peg that it's the work of a guitarist who has finally been given the chance to do whatever he wants on record. There are layers and layers of guitars on each cut, so much so that it's hard to tell exactly how many overdubs are on each track, and they're all pushed to the front of the mix. Even when there isn't a specific guitar solo, each guitar part ...

| | Doobie Brothers Doobie's Choice CD (2002)
This Magnificent Distance
$6.09 Additional personnel includes: Arlo Guthrie (autoharp); Victor Feldman (marimba, percussion); The Memphis Horns.
Recorded between 1972 and 1991. Includes liner notes by Barry Alfonso.
As the title indicates, the 20 tracks that comprise Doobie's Choice are songs that the Doobie Brothers themselves chose as highlights in their vast catalog. This isn't just the classic years, which should be evident the moment the album begins and "Divided Highway," from 1991's Brotherhood, starts playing. And from that moment on, it's clear that this album will prove that old axiom true -- namely, that an artist is not always the best judge of their own work. That's not to say that this record is filled with arcane, unusual choices, since there are quite a few songs that really are among the best album tracks in the Doobie's catalog -- and, yes, they were a band that did have good songs not released as singles -- but overall, this plays as a little bit too idiosyncratic to be appealing to most listeners, even those looking to dig a little deeper into the Doobie's catalog. It has its merits, but it's a little bit too much like a mix tape compiled by a big fan for personal use -- jumping around from era to era, finding the sublime and the mundane rubbing shoulders -- to make it truly successful. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
