| | Issac Delgado En Primera Plana CD (2007)
Salsa CD music
$10.35 Cuban salsa star Isaac Delgado offers up a typically festive album with EN PRIMER PLANA, which garnered a Grammy nod in 2007. While Delgado's resonant vocals are clearly the main draw, PRIMER PLANA also boasts a guest appearance by singer Victor Manuelle (on the bright opening track, "La Mujer Que Mas Te Duele") and some nice licks from revered piano player Gonzalo Rubalcaba (see the highly percussive title track), making for a top-notch salsa outing.

| | Tito Rojas Sensual CD (1990)
Salsa songs
$10.39 This was the record that opened a new chapter in Tito Rojas' recording career, and rightly so; one of salsa's most remarkable comebacks in history, this was one of the few salsa recordings where virtually all the tunes became solid hits. "Doble," "Sensual," "Tormenta de Amor," "Si Me Voy o Me Quedo," "Siempre Seré," "Este Amor," and "Me Mata la Soledad" solidified Rojas' reputation as a sure-fire hitmaker. Although the recording seems to rely on the already insipid romantic salsa craze, this was just part of what would yield to bigger and better things. ~ José A. Estévez, Jr.
Tito Rojas Y Su Orquesta: Tito Rojas, Mario Davila, Jr. (vocals), Miguel Rodriguez, Raul Acevedo (trumpet), Sammy Rodriguez, Fanta (trombone), Micke Rivera (piano), Juan Andujal (bass), Hector R. | | Monchy & Alexandra Hasta El Fin CD (2004)
Salsa album
$11.15 Monchy & Alexandra combine salsa & merengue music with American pop on HASTA EL FIN. Largely consisting of passionate love songs, this 2004 release features stunning vocal performances, tight musicianship, and resplendent production. As with many Latin albums, the percussion is the backbone of the ensemble and the driving force behind the music. For example, on "Esperando Estar Juntos" and "No Te Prometo Que Si (Tratare de Olvidar)," the congas, bongos, and guiro lay down a taut groove, while Monchy & Alexandra's legato voices soliloquize overtop. On HASTA EL FIN, Monchy & Alexandra do not offer up any of the wilder, more celebratory, forms of merengue and salsa (a la Tito Puente); instead, this is scaled-down romantic music in the bachata vein. Because the music is so intimate, HASTA EL FIN is better suited for a candle-lit dinner than a dance hall.
| | Kain Blue Guerilla CD (1971)
Salsa CD music
$9.85 This solo album by Gylan Kain, one of the original Last Poets -- before the group recorded for Douglas Records -- is a study in angry poetics, performance art, and killer presentation. Recorded and issued in the early '70s, The Blue Guerrilla is a freestyle set before such a thing was even a dream. Kain's one pissed-off cat, raging not only against the usual necessary concerns, but also against the stereotypes in his own community. Free jazz-funk grooves on guitars, electric violins, a slew of drums, and ghostly keyboards accompany his gorgeous and disturbing ranting that is far from pointless. From the opening ritual scarification of "I Ain't Black," with it's free jazz approach and over-the-top screaming, to the poignant indictment of "Harlem Preacher," to "Black Satin Amazon" and "Constipated Monkey," Kain is a hipster without a country, a street poet without an audience, an activist without sympathy. And rather than succumb and stylize his thang to get his message across, he becomes angrier, slyer, slicker, less forgiving, and more insightful. Music is placed here not as accompaniment, but as a framework for Kain to place his poetry in a context of the African-American oral tradition and the Living Theatre. And he gives no quarter. This man makes the Last Poets he left behind sound like schoolboys trying to sound pissed off. Kain would make Gil Scott-Heron run away for fear of being exposed as the effete he became before he turned into an out-and-out drug addict. There aren't any other records like this; this is the sound of the apocalypse, one that Amiri Baraka predicted and celebrated. Come to The System of Dante's Hell as narrated by Kain. Sit down, listen all the way though if you can; wake up. There's a riot goin' on. ~ Thom Jurek

| | Louisana Red Live In Monterey CD (2000)
Salsa album
$15.05 Recorded live at the Montreux Jazz Festival, Montreux, Switzerland, in 1975.
Recorded live in Switzerland in 1975, here's Louisiana Red performing solo to a wildly appreciative audience. Armed with nothing more than his slide guitar and a voice that consumes most of the space in the mix, Red lays down a set of originals and old standards like Sam Cooke's "Bring It on Home to Me" with equal flair. This is a very inspired performance and one of Red's best albums to date. Highly recommended. ~ Cub Koda
