| | VH1: I Love The '70S CD
VH1's collection of killer chart hits from the 1970s contains cuts that will likely be immediately familiar to almost anyone alive during that era. Sequenced chronologically, the set opens at the dawn of the decade with the Guess Who's "American Woman" (long before Lenny Kravitz got his hands on it), and grooves straight through to '79's "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugarhill Gang--the single that, appropriately, ushered in the '80s and the age of rap.
The tunes in between are not only good, but are emblematic of the trends and cultural currents of the time. Helen Reddy's "I Am Woman" recalls the burgeoning feminist movement, while Curtis Mayfield's "Superfly" and Issac Hayes's "Theme from Shaft" are from the soundtracks to popular Blaxploitation films. Ray Stevens's "The Streak" reminds listeners of the streaking fad; while John Sebastian's "Welcome Back" conjures visions of WELCOME BACK, KOTTER's Vinnie Barbarino and Horshack. There's also FM rock (Lynyrd Skynyrd), disco (KC & the Sunshine Band, Chic, and Sister Sledge), soft-rock balladry (Bread), and, of course, Don McLean's epic "American Pie -- Parts I & II." Weren't the '70s great?

| | John Mellencamp Human Wheels CD (1993) Bonus Track; Remastered
VH1: I Love The '70S album
$7.55 On his previous albums, John Mellencamp always infused his heartland rock with a hopefulness and party spirit that kept his paeans to the trials of the working man from becoming bleak. Not so here--if those discs were gritty rock & roll efforts, then HUMAN WHEELS is the artist's dark, confessional singer/songwriter record. Here swaggering, power-chord-driven bombast and anthemic choruses are often replaced by gently strummed mandolin, organ swells, and whispered, elegant verse. There are also hints of things to come--"Junior" and "French Shoes" are driven by dance rhythms that foreshadow the electronic ...

If punk rejected pop history, LONDON CALLING reclaimed it, albeit with a knowing perspective. The scope of this double set is breathtaking, encompassing reggae, rockabilly, and the group's own furious mettle. Such a combination might seem over-ambitious, but the Clash accomplish it with swaggering panache. Guy Stevens, who produced ...
| | Chris Connelly Shipwreck CD (1994)
VH1: I Love The '70S music CDs
$13.79 After trawling some heavy depths on Phenobarb Bambalam, Connelly took a generally sassier and, dare it be said, glammier approach on Shipwreck. Not that the more melancholic side of life wasn't addressed, and quite well at that, but most of the songs have a sharp acoustic/electric guitar kick and at once rough and carefully produced feel to them that steers away from both the subdued and sprawling arrangements prevalent on Phenobarb. "What's Left but Solid Gold?" and the brawling "Drench" are two of the particular highlights, fierce and fine. Combined with the ever-reminiscent sense of Bowie's vocal style that Connelly makes his own, it's almost as if Aladdin Sane decided to reappear in the mid-'90s -- a connection heightened by Connelly's performance of "The Cracked Actor" during the tour for Shipwreck. Further ...
