Formed in 1998 in Massachusetts, the five-piece metalcore outfit Unearth have earned their success the traditional way, with constant touring and gradual honing of instrumental and recording skills. Their third album, THE ONCOMING STORM, is an ecstatic mix of instrumental smarts, searing vocals, and shredding guitar, combined with breakneck tempo changes and punishing volume. The twin-guitar attack of "Endless" conjures the ghosts of ancient rock warriors Black Sabbath, though Unearth's 21st Century scorched-earth approach to metal makes the wild men of yesteryear seem quaint. And Trevor Phipps's opening scream on "Black Hearts Now Reign" (which, uniquely for this brand of high-octane metal, also features backing vocals) seems designed to both wake the dead and scare the pants off the living. With an album as powerful as THE ONCOMING STORM under its collective belt, Unearth is well on the way to seizing a dominant position in US metalcore.
New Version Now Has 2 New Tracks.
Unearth: Trevor Phipps (vocals); Ken Susi, Buz McGrath (guitar); John "Slo" Maggard (bass guitar); Mike Justian (drums).
Rolling Stone (p.120) - 3 stars out of 5 - "'This Lying World' opens with a galvanizing call-and-response session between guitar and bass that gives way to torrid, speedy runs." CMJ (p.19) - "[With] skull-stomping mosh, melodic vocals and more memorable strong structures....Unearth has made the first complete album of its young career." Oncoming Storm album
$9.55 Hardcore albums never sound this perfect, nor do most death or black metal albums for that matter. In fact, it would not be a stretch to announce this as the holy grail of the new breed of European metal-influenced hardcore that has sprung up recently with the likes of Shadow's Fall, Darkest Hour, Red Roses for a Blue Lady, Sevenday Curse, All That Remains, and several others. Upon initially listening to this CD, many might require essays to describe the utter awe and complete mind-trip this album is likely to reign over them. Maybe it is comparable to those first Heartwork, Left Hand Path, Slaughter of the Soul, or In the Nightside of Eclipse experiences, jaw-dropping affairs that change listeners' views of music -- in said genre of course. Defying every expectation set upon the hardcore genre, The Stings of Conscience draws upon the bottomless pool of European metal talent (plus the occasional overt American influence) and melds it with traditional hardcore. The result brings about the most blissfully indulgent, entrancing, and overall greatest hardcore release ever. After a pleasant but normal opening track, the unleashing of terror and technical dismay ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Oncoming Storm CD music
$6.19 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to ...
| | God Forbid Gone Forever CD (2004)
Oncoming Storm music CDs
$10.65 Gone Forever is the heavily anticipated follow-up to God Forbid's 2001 CD Determination. Since the release of that album, their Century Media debut, they moved up the ladder from being an opening act on several package tours to scoring a spot on the MTV Headbangers' Ball tour (with likeminded bands Shadows Fall and Lamb of God) and finally emerging as headliners in their own right. They come out with their guns blazing on this album, as opener "Force-Fed" throws everything they've got at the listener: racing Swedish death metal riffs, tightly synchronized dual-guitar leads à la Carcass' Heartwork, "chugga-chugga" hardcore breakdowns, and a bloodletting of harsh, screaming vocals. It is an impressive, punishing song that comes at you from about five different directions. They proceed to do the same thing eight more times on the album, with only the brief quiet intros on "Precious Lie" and "Judge the Blood" offering any reprieve. Apart from these moments, the intensity never lets down, although the melodic vocal refrains on "Better Days" and "Precious Lie" add some welcome contrast (and unlike many hardcore-metal bands that try to incorporate clean vocals, God Forbid can actually sing). There ...
| | All That Remains This Darkened Heart CD (2004)
Oncoming Storm songs
$9.79 Judging from just the first song on This Darkened Heart, one is tempted to immediately rank All That Remains among the top tier of current Swedish-influenced American hardcore-metal bands (and there are a lot of them). The dual-guitar interplay of Oli Herbert and Mike Martin is intricate and impressive, and their classically tinged riff-writing yields at least a slight distinction from their many At the Gates-influenced contemporaries. However, as early as the second track -- and again on several of the others -- they reveal their downfall in attempting to incorporate passages of melodic singing. It's a downfall they share with plenty of other bands in this genre. It would be a great idea to try this technique if these bands could pull it off tastefully, but All That Remains, like many of their counterparts, do not do so. The cleanly sung breakdowns on "Focus Shall Not Fail," "Tattered on My Sleeve," and the title track feel forced and are at times cringe inducing, sounding vaguely like bad-'80s radio rock (think late Journey). The other problem is that, as the album wears on, the experienced listener can't help but get the feeling that he or she has heard many of these riffs before ...
| | Killswitch Engage End Of Heartache CD (2004)
Oncoming Storm album
$10.59 On Killswitch Engage's previous two albums, the group delivered the sort of passionate speed/thrash rarely heard since RIDE THE LIGHTNING-era Metallica and REIGN IN BLOOD-era Slayer. With THE END OF THE HEARTACHE, which features new singer Howard Jones, the band takes its signature sound to a new, absolutely ferocious level, combining slicing, neo-classical guitar riffs with vocals that ...
