Sometime in the early 1990s, a new sound began to emanate from the swamplands of Georgia and its surrounding Southern states. It was a growling, grimy noise descended from Too Short, the Geto Boys, and other gangsta rap artists. Heavy on the bass, this funky and decadent music from the Dirty South became known as "crunk." Although brought into the public consciousness by the otherworldly musings of hip-hop renegades Outkast, it wasn't until an Atlanta DJ and former record executive named Lil Jon declared himself and his East Side Boyz "the Kings of Crunk" that the rap style really took off.
CRUNK CLASSICS collects tracks from the apex of the sub-genre, including artists from all over the Dirty South. The disc swoops down to Miami for Trick Daddy and JT Money, and journeys into Tennessee to pick up members of Three 6 Mafia. This album also visits North Carolina for Petey Pablo, returns to the heart of Georgia for Youngbloodz, Archie Eversole, and, of course, Lil Jon, who captures the essence of the compilation on a duet with the legendary Too Short.
The kind of crunk Lil Jon took to the top of the charts isn't all there is to the genre, but the way some compilers focus on it you'd think it was. Crunk Classics ain't goin' out like that. Lil Jon is here, but the collection earns respect from the tracks it surrounds the King of Crunk with. Crusty classics like Three 6 Mafia's "Tear da Club '97," UGK's "Pocket Full of Stones," and Gangsta Boo's career-defining "Where Dem Dollas At" make Crunk Classics one of the more desirable collections of the genre, and are evidence the compilers knew what they were doing. The proof is the amount of shoulda-been-bigger numbers included -- Drama's "Left Right Left" and "Do It" from Rasheeda being the best. Listeners coming to the collection from the Lil Jon angle might be surprised at how sparse and down-low most of the tracks are, but that's what makes them so visceral, so thug, so crunk. Unfortunately, there are no producer credits, no liner notes, or any attempt at telling the story. The Southern rap community has always felt underappreciated and their triumphs are horribly undocumented. Crunk Classics will still make newbies hunt for the whens, the wheres, and the whys, but it's close to what a crunk fanatic might make you if you begged for a mixtape. Shakira's brand new English album She Wolf is an uptempo pop album. It is all about synthesizers and electronic concepts, all mixed with the world sounds that we are used to from Shakira.. sounds from countries like India, the Middle East and her home country of Colombia. She Wolf features a predominantly English track list with a follow up album of new and unique repertoire in Spanish to come in 2010. "Russian Roulette," released weeks prior to Rated R, just hinted at Rihanna's sudden desire to provoke. Even with the realization that it is metaphorical, the song startles with its hesitant gasps, spinning cylinders, and verses that are glacially paced, where a cold piano line and the slight inflections in Rihanna's voice are front and center. And then there's an audible shudder followed by a discharged bullet -- the abrupt end to one of Rated R's most restrained moments. It's not the only instance where Rihanna's rise in fame, combined with being the victim in the decade's highest-profile felonious assault, added up to a perfect-storm scenario for a creative overhaul. 50 Cent protegee and G-Unit crew member Lloyd Banks returns with ROTTEN APPLE, the follow-up to his successful 2004 debut. With beats from 9th Wonder, Havoc, Needlz, Dave Morris, Fatin, Midi Mafia, Timbaland, and Eminem, and a controlled flow that at times outdoes his mentor in sheer slickness, the Queens native shines here. The album rigidly adheres to the same "commercial-but-street" blueprint followed by virtually every G-Unit, Dipset, and Roc-A-Fella solo release. Banks gets help from an impressive guest list that includes Mobb Deep, Scarface, Young Buck, Tony Yayo, Musiq Soulchild, 8Ball, 50 Cent, and Rakim.
After a promising debut, G-Unit soldier Lloyd Banks hedged his bets, subdued the hungry, punch line-filled style that defined him, and delivered a so-so effort that coasts on the G-Unit formula. With an EP's worth of heat -- the infectious single "Hands Up" with 50 Cent being the hottest -- Rotten Apple is no disaster, and there's no doubt the G-Unit faithful will get twice as much out of this than everyone else, especially with the G-Unit universe guest list and the numerous raw, freestyle-flavored productions that sound like they fell off a G-Unit Radio mixtape. The long, word-filled flows are here, as are the humorous stingers Banks likes to drop, but his delivery is surprisingly weary, and often on the more street tracks, the production is drab, making it easy to drift away from the words no matter how sharp. Luckily, G-Unit's bag of hooks just keeps on giving, and when Rotten Apple goes for polish, it succeeds. Besides "Hands Up," there's the cool "Help" -- a "one for the ladies" track with Keri Hilson -- and "You Know the Deal" with Rakim, which sounds exactly how Mobb Deep's G-Unit debut should have.
