| | Big Wu Tool For The Evening CD Big Wu Discography of CDs
Although the Big Wu fit the jam band stereotype to a certain degree, their playful and rootsy attitude has more in common with the likes of Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen or even the sainted NRBQ than with the flaccid white-boy wiggle of the legions of Phish imitators. Kicking off with the rollicking, piano-driven jump blues of "Texas Fireball," Tool for Evening consists almost entirely of concise and catchy pop songs rather than lengthy frameworks for expanded noodly solos. Although the quartet can vamp with the best of the jam bands (as shown on the centerpiece "Jazz 88," one of only two tracks to break the six-minute barrier), they wisely focus their energy here on creating memorable hooks and singalong choruses, as on the countrified "Stole My Girlfriend" and the particularly NRBQ-like "Dog's Dead." Guitarist and co-lead singer Jason Fladager quit the band before the writing and recording of this album; what relation there might be between his departure and the Big Wu's newfound focus on their always evident pop skills is unclear, but it must be said that Tool for Evening is the Big Wu's best studio album by some distance. ~ Stewart Mason

$16.39 You know, they just don't fit. They don't fit the young, pop, cookie-cutter profile of the stereotypical rock band - by any stretch of the imagination. And, in a very appropriate way, that does fit. Because the Mill City Rockers are America's Favorite Biker Band. They play to motorcycle and music enthusiasts whenever, wherever they can, with a dedication and manic enthusiasm that has held up through 17 years of ups, downs, and sometimes backwards adventures. They have shared the stage with the likes of Charlie Daniels and Blue Oyster Cult. They've enthralled listeners with their original rock anthems at Daytona, Myrtle Beach, and Laconia Bike Weeks. They're veterans of a scene that counts them as one of their own. The Mill City Rockers' varied musical backgrounds and tastes combine into a hard-driving, cutting edge, in your face brand of rock-n-roll that can speed to a wild frenzy then dip into the soothing lull of heartfelt blues or hang out somewhere intoxicatingly in between. Tight, in the groove and passionate ...

$38.09 Driveway is a new group from Toronto made up of ex-MAdE frontman Jason Taylor, ex-MAdE bass player Chris Sytnyk, drummer Robin Mason (Superhalo, Statistics), and Corey Matheson (Haggis) on banjo, pedal steel and guitar. These seasoned musicians have combined their influences that include Whiskeytown, The Jayhawks, Lucinda Williams, Coldplay, The Rolling Stones, Pixies, and Sonic Youth to form this ‘rock band’.“Some people are trying to call us alt-country, but that’s ‘cause they are looking for an easy description. They hear a pedal steel and automatically assume ‘country’. Alt-country is a buzz word right now and the problem with buzz words is: one, they are hard to shake and two, they fall out of fashion. We’re just a rock band.” says singer/songwriter, Jason Taylor of Driveway’s sound. Driveway’s self-titled debut was recorded independently and released by Curve Music. “We wanted to with small labels because we want to start out organically,” says Taylor, “I’d like the band to find and define itself.” On their debut CD Taylor is the main songwriter; however the band is free to add whatever they ...
