Sneer if you must, but the simple fact is that smooth jazz hath charms to soothe the savage beast (if not the snobby music critic). At its best, it can offer the perfect combination of velvety, cake-like sonic textures, sweet melodicism and sturdy funk beats. If you're looking for flights of virtuosic improvisatory fancy, you'll want to consult the Young Lions or dig into your old vinyl collection, but let's be honest: the average listener cares less about the solos than about the mood and the melodies, and smooth jazz provides both in spades. Saxophone wunderkind Eric Darius (just 21-years-old and still a college student) cites Earth, Wind & Fire, Jeff Lorber and Stevie Wonder as major influences, which will give you some idea what to expect here: soulful grooves, expert arrangements and a general approach that is maybe just a bit too professional. The funky title track is especially attractive, though, and "In the Pocket" is built on a nicely strutting rhythm over which Darius bounces and weaves with effortless grace. The world could probably have waited a while longer for yet another cover of "Love TKO," but this is a fine album overall. ~ Rick Anderson

Eric Darius Night On The Town Songs Night On The Town Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) A Dream Not Deferred! Last night, 28 May 2006, I had the great pleasure of listening to this young brother's second live performance in Fayetteville, NC. He is high-energy, Mr. Intensity from start to finish. His smooth, effortless movement throughout the range of the instrument, from low B flat to high F sharp, and beyond, is amazing. As his skills evolve toward greater spiritual dimensions, the music he will produce will be nothing short of inspired. I'll keep listening for the evolution - a saxophonic revolution -- for it WILL be internationally televised! Submitted by Stephen -- Alto Sax (Fayetteville, NC, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
FAB-U-LOUS! I've been listening to this fabulous young man for a few years now. This CD captures his creative talent and his electric personality. His music is so contagious...it's on your mind for days after you've heard it. If you are not lucky enough to hear him live....this CD is as close to electric as you can get. | | Maria Armoudian Life In The New World CD (2005)
Night On The Town music CDs
$10.19 Maria Armoudian is not your typical singer/songwriter: Part radio host, part environmental commissioner, part scholar-in-training and full-blooded singer/songwriter. Although her music was temporarily side-tracked by her political and environmental commitments, she soon returned to playing again. "When I first learned what was happening in the world, I felt I had to put all of my efforts into trying to make a difference, so I left music to work in the nonprofit world and then, directly in politics," explained Armoudian. "It was an eye-opening experience for an idealistic artist like myself. Ultimately, this CD is a result of my experiences there ... what I’ve seen, heard, experienced ... and the great sadness I felt from it all. So I guess the irony is that politics sent me back to music -- where I could find respite, refuge." Maria's Life in the New World is like the antithesis of pop acts like Britney Spears. It is sophisticated, artful, intense, with rich melodies and harmonies and stories that will move you. "Sometimes we need music to say those things that words alone can’t say. Sometimes the conditions of life just make your soul ...
