It always bolsters one's faith in the vitality of jazz to hear small group improvisation sessions such as Jeff Johnson's NEAR EARTH. On this accomplished set, Johnson joins his double bass with Tad Britton's drums and Hans Teuber's saxophone for some jamming that encompasses traditional, modal, and free styles. The trio range across the board from evocative, impressionistic playing, like the smooth, gesture-filled "Traditional Abstract," to bop-inspired freneticism, as on "Quickening."
Even though the ensemble often employs fractured, nervous phrases and clattering cross-rhythms, there is a great restraint to its playing. This is not the in-your-face avant-skronk many listeners associate with free jazz; instead the players work within an idiom that uses the vocabulary of free jazz for more subtle explorations. The lovely "Zen" may be the most obvious example, but Johnson, Britton, and Teuber's sensitive interplay and skillful shading can be heard even on the more aggressive tracks. NEAR EARTH is a refreshing example of the free jazz lineage, and should be of interest to listeners of many stripes.
Bassist Jeff Johnson's third solo release for Origin features his 14-year-old trio with saxophonist Hans Teuber and drummer Tad Britton, in a set of collective improvisations, originals, and takes on the pop tunes "Dream" and "The Good Life." Bassist wit

Near Earth album
$13.45 Drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts leads his quintet plus guest altoist Kenny Garrett through extended versions of four of his originals (all of which he had recorded previously in the studio) plus Björk's "107 Steps." While "107 Steps" and "JC Is the Man" (which is more Thelonious Monk than John Coltrane) are fine, it is not until Garrett makes his first appearance on "Mr. JJ" (which is more Coltrane than J.J. Johnson) that this set really explodes. Garrett's passion inspires Watts during their midsong duet and adds a great deal of energy during the three songs on which he appears, completely stealing the show. Watts takes a surprise ...
| | Steve Turre Spirits Up Above CD (2004)
Near Earth CD music
$13.85 Trombonist Steve Turre pays tribute to his former employer, the remarkable multi-reedist Rahsaan Roland Kirk, on this sincere effort. Turre and an all-star group perform nine of Kirk's songs plus the trombonist's "One for Kirk." But although the music is certainly well played, one misses Rahsaan's miraculous innovations. It was logical getting James Carter for the date since Carter, like Kirk, can play any reed instrument in any style. But surprisingly Carter is mostly pretty restrained during the project, as if he is going out of his way not to sound like Rahsaan. His usual high-energy multi-style improvisations are replaced by a more melodic and less colorful approach. Carter, Turre, altoist Vincent Herring and pianist ...
| | Linda Ronstadt Hummin' To Myself CD (2004)
Near Earth music CDs
$14.39 Successful careers that stretch over multiple decades are hardly accidents. For interpretive singers, the keys are juggling genres, selecting appropriate material, and working with compassionate collaborators. Linda Ronstadt, who scored her first hit in 1968, gets high marks in all these categories, and 2004's HUMMIN' TO MYSELF, an album of standards, is no exception. On the gentle swing of "Blue Prelude," the brassy declarations of "Never Will I Marry," and the tongue-in-cheek pathos of "Miss Otis Regrets," Ronstadt's warm, familiar alto fronts a top-shelf ...

| | Donald Harrison Free Style CD (2005) (Import) Germany
Near Earth album
$18.19 Donald Harrison plays quite well throughout this set, displaying a distinctive tone and a consistently creative style within the genre of straight-ahead jazz. All but the last two selections feature him accompanied by bassist Vicente Archer and drummer John Lamkin, both of whom stay very much in the background, often playing repetitive and somewhat dull figures. Pianist Glenn Patscha is on three numbers without making an impression, while the final two songs have Harrison joined by Ron Carter and Billy Cobham. ...
| | Ken Walker Terra Firma CD (2005)
Near Earth CD music
$10.55 Terra Firma features six talented modern mainstream players who are based in Denver. Each of these musicians deserves to be better-known but living in Denver does not help their name recognition. Trumpeter Al Hood is excellent on his ballad feature "Blackberry Winter," pianist Jeff Jenkins takes consistently rewarding solos (recalling McCoy Tyner on "Amsterdam After Dark") and Pete Sommer's muscular tenor solos add fire to the music. The repertoire performed by bassist ...
