Her appearance on Beenie Man's "Dude" made the song an instant dancehall classic, and now the talented, charisma-overflowing Ms. Thing turns that song's promise into a smoking debut full-length. When it comes to Jamaican riddims, Miss Jamaica grabs the best while coming up with some amazing new sounds of its own. The "Dude" riddim shows up again, this time in the opening "Regular." This talented sing-jay doesn't bother quoting "Dude" again over her flagship riddim, she's too talented and hungry to show it, and "Regular" is proof. "I Want It All" is not only her credo, but also another killer track. Japanese strings spice-up "Jump Up & Rail," "Get That Money" is the Funkadelic-styled singalong you don't expect, and "Muscle Tight" is the catchiest jingle Kegel exercises could hope for. But "Muscle Tight" is also the best example of the album's great blunder. Like her spiritual guide, Lady Saw, Ms. Thing is about sweaty sex, slack, and naming body parts. Who knows what audience they were thinking of, but Sequence -- a label that's treated dancehall fans to some great, respect-filled compilations in the past -- has decided to edit the tracks making blue numbers like "Muscle Tight" sound ridiculous. It's like making Vanity 6 wear turtleneck sweaters or telling 50 Cent not to mention crime. Even with the horrible lapse in judgment, Miss Jamaica is too good not to support, and if you passed on it you'd miss two of the most quirky and stunning tracks to come out of the dancehall in some time. The fresher-than-fresh "Love Guide" is stuttering electro evidence that Dizzee Rascal albums have invaded Jamaica, and "Sweet Soca Music" makes the brilliant move of copping the same Rolling Stones' riff the Verve did. It's a closing one-two punch that lays you flat after an already thrill-filled album. Even with the editing, Miss Jamaica is crucial, but it could have been classic. ~ David Jeffries

| | Marlon Saunders Enter My Mind CD (2003)
Miss Jamaica CD music
$18.99 Principally recorded at Crazy Caps, Queens, New York; Severe Sound, World and Jazz Hole Studios, New York, New York.
Singer/songwriter Marlon Saunders' solo debut leaves no doubt that he is one of the new elite's rising stars. Enter My Mind is a heavy R&B-flavored, old-school-style collection of emotive ballads and irresistible dance sounds that bring out the best of Saunders' great, soulful voice. As a vocalist, Saunders is not exactly an Eddie Levert, Marvin Gaye, or Luther Vandross, three of the greatest R&B love ballad singers of the 20th century, but he certainly has the potential to be and his special sound should reap a windfall of fans. His songwriting skillfully blends memorable symbolism and metaphors with strong melodies that entice listeners through his beautifully inspired message. "For Love" melds classic Stevie Wonder and Wonderlove's smoove (a combination of smooth and groove) with a cool hip-hop/R&B stroll. "Premonition" channels the spirits of Marvin Gaye and Eddie Levert ...

| | Lady Saw Strip Tease CD (2004)
Miss Jamaica album
$10.89 With sex being the topic 90 percent of the time, Lady Saw isn't the most versatile woman in dancehall and a better singles than album artist. Fortunately, the XXX Strip Tease sounds like a greatest-hits collection with only a couple moderate tracks. Nearly everything on the album finds Saw nasty as ever, taking unexpected, playful turns and adding more R&B to her sound. "Loser" is the straight-up dancehall stunner with Ce'Cile guesting. You'll need a note from your parents to listen to it, but "Pretty Pussy" is the album's most forceful track and the unquotable lyrics are exhilarating. The big singalong, party tune "I've Got Your Man" could dominate R&B radio if given half a chance, while the R. Kelly meets Mae West "Thug Loving" smoothly kicks off the album's fantastic pillow-talk wind down. All this horniness ends with the thoughtful "Dedicated to Mama," and if you're skeptical Lady Saw can touch the soul, know that her lack of candor is both in her sexual numbers and the ones from her heart. "Now I know/What it's like/Raising a family and being a wife," she sings, and admits she had no idea how hard the struggle must have been for her mother. It's a rare, vulnerable moment from the singer that almost doesn't fit with the rest ...
| | Z-Ro Cocaine CD (2009)
Miss Jamaica CD music
$15.05 Despite his status as one of hip-hop's most prolific artists, Z-Ro never quite spreads himself too thin. The provocatively titled COCAINE is his second release from 2009, and features his trademark self-aware, yet rapier-sharp lyrics over some of the hotter beats out of the fertile Houston scene. The Intro skilfully sets out the landscape as the dark-vocaled MC reflects upon his choice of a life of street dealing without a shred of remorse, while stressing his decision was not exactly the wise one. From there, Z-Ro, an expert storyteller, wanders from tale to tale, each one delivered with a novelist's touch, on a record which somehow transcends cookie-cutter.
In 2009, Z-Ro's loyal fan base expected Heroin, a two-CD set announced the previous year, but instead they got Cocaine, a one-CD version with many songs that already appeared on the mixtape Codeine. Confusing, and rumors of the rapper's difficulties with the Rap-A-Lot label top it all off, but the good news is that Cocaine is no great disappointment. It does feel a bit disjointed and perhaps cobbled together from tracks recorded for the mythological Heroin, but fans of the rapper ...
