From its earliest days, hip-hop has really been about "The Message," perhaps best summed up by Grandmaster Flash's enduring 1982 classic of the same name. While that song's decaying world evokes feelings of spiritual abandonment, the forceful track lays undeniable claim to rap's power as a pulpit. Although hip-hop's first few decades did not produce any huge gospel-rap acts, thoughts of God have dominated the hip-hop universe, from the ubiquitous "thanks" to Him in liner notes to the frequent religious-themed hit singles. Even the grittiest of rappers, from 2Pac to Nas to the Geto Boys, have been influenced by God. HOLY HIP HOP: TAKING THE GOSPEL TO THE STREETS contains 12 works of praise from all walks of rap. The first three tracks reveal the collection's spectrum of hip-hop colors, opening with ShonLock's Nelly-esque dance-pop "Boogie Bounce," followed by the Dirty South fire of Ziklag's "Raw & Uncut," and then switching to the R&B-flavored "Praise Him" by Shei Atkins. HOLY HIP HOP's power lies in its dual celebration of the spirits of hip-hop and faith.

| | Sanctus Real Face Of Love CD (2006)
Holy Hip Hop: Taking The Gospel To The Streets
$10.75 Christian rockers Sanctus Real blend elements of post-grunge, indie rock, and emo with messages of faith and devotion. The band sounds very assured on its third outing, THE FACE OF LOVE, with smarter, catchier songcraft, tighter arrangements, and some nice sonic trimmings. The album's opener and first single, "I'm Not All right," is a melodic blast that proves Sanctus Real can be majestic and sweeping, while "Eloquent" is tight and nervous, and the title track merges a post-punk ethos with pop-rock. In all, THE FACE OF LOVE is an impressive showing from one of Christian rock's brighter lights. Having evolved from power pop to heavier rock back to melodic modern fare, Sanctus Real blend the styles ...

| | Boats Tomorrow Time CD (2006) (Import) United Kingdom
Holy Hip Hop: Taking The Gospel To The Streets
$15.05 The well-practiced UK duo of Andrew Hargreaves and Craig Tattersall (The Remote Viewer, ex-Hood) are now up to their third album and have possibly come up with their most defined statement yet. After conquering the mighty piano on their homespun and beautiful We Made It For You, the two have now made the ultimate Christmas card with Tomorrow Time. At least, it's the Christmas card you wish you could send; with titles such as "You're an Idiot" and "A Sincere F**k You," it's a far cry from garden-bound robins and snowy idylls. However The Boats have not injected their loving music with this harsh sentiment: you'll be pleased to know that they're as warm and delicate as ever and are joined by vocalists Chris Stewart and Elaine Reynolds who aid in the band's quest to weave the most pleasing micro-pop yet borne on our fair earth. On Tomorrow Time we see a band who have successfully ...
