This superb 1961 date matches Dexter Gordon's booming tenor sax with a dynamite rhythm section of Kenny Drew on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. Like all his early '60s Blue Note recordings, this is Gordon at his absolute best.
It's a nice mix of originals and standards, including an up-tempo take on Charlie Chaplin's "Smile." There are no surprises here, just straight-ahead bluesy bebop by some of the masters of the genre.

This 1964 Blue Note release features Jackie McLean and his band in fine form. A hard-bop record with polytonal leanings, ACTION exemplifies an era in jazz when new ideas were truly budding. Ornette Coleman and his associates had been playing free jazz five years prior to the making of this album, but it took a while for the hard-boppers to digest the music and embrace the freedom that the style brought to the art form. Therefore, a lot of the music from this period sounds like it's in transition, and ACTION is no exception.

When Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers expanded to a sextet with the addition of Curtis Fuller on trombone, the group took on the character of a small big band propelled by Blakey's forceful drumming. BUHAINA'S DELIGHT, another session in the long line of great Blue Note dates from this period, displays that classic line-up in pristine form. With Freddie Hubbard replacing Lee Morgan, Cedar Walton replacing Bobby Timmons and musical director Wayne Shorter, the Messengers were full of fresh sounds and vibrant with energy.
Uncharacteristically for a Messengers session, the relaxed shuffle "Backstage Sally" opens the disc in a laid back groove. Shorter's brilliant playing is featured prominently on this session on the delicate ballad "Contemplation" and many stunning solo spots. The title track (dubbed for Blakey's Islamic name, Buhaina) and a dynamic arrangement of the standard "Moon River" are excellent examples of the classic Messengers sound: challenging horn arrangements, expressive soloing and assertive drumming by the leader. Forget the stylized in-session cover art closeup of the "jazz man at work:" eyes clenched shut, lips pursed around a mouthpiece, dim lighting. On the cover of his Blue Note debut Gordon appears perched in a Central Park carriage in a sharp-looking trench coat, one hand on his horn case, the other waving a cigarette, a big grin on his face. Doin' allright, indeed. And compared to some of his labelmates, Gordon was perhaps something of an already-arrived success, having been on the scene for over twenty years by the time of this 1961 recording.
The confidence one would expect therefore, and the sunny disposition implied by the cover, are equally borne out by the music within. Gordon could write, as evidenced by his two fine originals here, "For Regulars Only" and "Society Red," but he enjoyed working with standards as well and made them swing hard. He doubletimes his way through Gershwin's "I Was Doing All Right" with effortless elegance, and coasts over the Styne/Cahn tune "It's You Or No One" with exuberant confidence, buoyed by Al Harewood's cooking cymbal work.

Gordon takes his time stretching out over the forms, which are particularly drawn out to begin with. Drew's "Coppin' the Haven" is a more concise continuation of the effort to reconcile the modal approach with the use of more bop-like changes. "Darn That Dream," a ballad feature for the leader, is done as a quartet, as is the one Gordon composition "Kong Neptune," a track not released on the original LP. A particularly interesting aspect of this disc is the chance to hear bassist Niels--Henning Orsted Pedersen making one of his earliest recorded appearances.
When he expatriated to Scandinavia just before this session in Paris was recorded, Dexter Gordon said he was liberated in many ways, as a jazz musician and as a human being. This is reflected in the lengthy track on this album, a testament to that newly found freedom, addressing the restrictions the American music scene placed on artists to do the two- to three-minute hit. With the nearly 18-minute "Tanya" and the 11-minute "Coppin' the Haven," Gordon and his quintet, featuring trumpeter Donald Byrd, were able to jam at length with no thought of being edited, and they fully prolong their instrumental remarks ...
