| | Herbie Hancock Jazz Moods: 'Round Midnight CD Herbie Hancock Discography of CDs
Herbie Hancock is one of the most influential pianists to emerge in the latter half of the 20th century. Since he appeared on the scene in 1960, Hancock has been praised for his skill as both a performer and a composer. His ability to construct knotty solos that seem to float effortlessly over the bar line is but one of his talents. In general, Hancock possesses a unique ability to take complex music and make it resonate with soul.
On JAZZ MOODS: 'ROUND MIDNIGHT, compilation producer Richard Seidel put together a sampling of some of the pianist's finest recorded moments, though this disc only concentrates on Hancock's acoustic side (he also made considerable forays into electric funk and hip-hop). Highlights on this JAZZ MOODS installment include "Circle," a steamy ballad performed by Miles Davis's second great quintet, and a wonderfully creative solo-piano rendition of "Someday My Prince Will Come." However, the most beautiful moment on this compilation is, appropriately enough, Hancock's gorgeous version of "'Round Midnight," which features the muted trumpet-like scatting of Bobby McFerrin. | | Blood, Sweat, and Tears New City CD (1975)
Jazz Moods: 'Round Midnight CD music
$10.49 In the late '60s and early '70s, Blood, Sweat & Tears was at the forefront of the rock with horns movement. But after lead singer David Clayton-Thomas' 1972 departure, both he and the band lost their commercial footing. New City finds Clayton-Thomas reconvening with Blood, Sweat & Tears after a three-year absence. Jimmy Lenner, who produced hits with the Raspberries, Grand Funk Railroad, and Three Dog Night, is behind the boards for this 1975 album. It does sound promising, but, in all honesty, New City fortunes seemed doomed from the start. The cover of the Blues Image's "Ride Captain ...

Jazz Moods: 'Round Midnight songs
$11.79 Well, gotta give credit to Saga for hitting on a new conceptual twist for a blues compilation, drawn largely on the '20s and '30s country blues tradition with a couple of 1951 ringers sneaking in courtesy of Bull Moose Jackson and Big Bill Broonzy. The program is themed according to geographical influence (tracks one through three), blues artists with Indian blood (tracks four through 11), and blues lyrics dealing with the Indian influence and experience (tracks 12 through 22). What you essentially hear is a country blues record with titles and the occasional lyrics sticking out to remind you of the theme. Well-known names like Tampa Red, Memphis Minnie, T-Bone Walker, Champion Jack Dupree, and Lowell Fulson figure in the first six tracks alone, a reassuring sign that Cherokee Boogie isn't some collection of second-rate odds and ends that would otherwise never have made it to disc. The sound quality is more hit-and-miss, with Walker's "Mean Old World" the first sign that old 78s are the principal source, and the scratchy surface noise becomes so pronounced for Papa Charlie Jackson and Priscilla Stewart that they barely make it out of the hiss. But the compilation is a great way to sample artists you normally wouldn't find grouped together. With its rumbling barrelhouse left hand, Dupree's original "Junker Blues," a straightforward rundown-cum-warning of the junkie life, is closer to Fats Domino's "The Fat Man" than it is to "Junco Partner." Both ...

| | Billie Holiday Lady Sings The Blues CD (1956) (Import) Germany
Jazz Moods: 'Round Midnight music CDs
$35.69 Some Holiday fans embrace the very weariness and faults of her late recordings that others find heartbreaking and disappointing. These sessions from 1955 and 1956 clearly show the results of a life marked by alcohol and drug abuse, horrific love affairs and racism. On such cuts as "Too Marvelous For Words" the contrast between the lyrics and Holiday's heavy-heartedness is disconcerting.
But the juxtaposition works on "I Must Have That Man," where Holiday's interpretations seem to be saying that even good love is tragic. The lynching depicted in "Strange Fruit" is certainly made even more powerful and harrowing by Holiday's slow, wrenching delivery. In 1959, Holiday would die with 70 cents in her bank account. LADY SINGS THE BLUES is the soundtrack for those final, troubled years.
Volume Four of Verve's complete Billy Holiday Story, this disc includes recordings from two sessions, some of which were issued on the album STAY WITH ME and others from the original release of the LADY SINGS THE BLUES. Lady Day's voice, by 1956, was beginning to thicken and transform, but her stylings and embellishments are still superb, and the delicious ...
