Moments
$12.09 The very first moments of Rodrigo y Gabriela's sophomore effort, 11:11, hit the listener cold in the face, and not just because of the amazing guitar playing. Sure, it's there, but it's what anyone who heard the duo's astonishing debut would expect. No, it's the sound of the record: immediate, forceful, crystalline; it's in-your-face compelling and impossible to ignore. 11:11 features 11 new compositions, dedicated to 11 musical artists (not all guitarists, either) who have had an influence on the duo. Recorded in Ixtapa, Mexico, the set was self-produced with the exception of two cuts, which were co-produced with John Leckie. Throughout, Rodrigo y Gabriela showcase their metal chops as part and parcel of their Mexican guitar heritage. They've not simply melded the two, but have created an entirely different form of music for the acoustic guitar in the process. It's infectious and accessible, full of pathos, intensity, passion, and color.
Audio Mixer: Colin Richardson.
Arranger: Rodrigo y Gabriela.

| | Riverdance CD (1996) Special Edition
Moments
$14.59 RIVERDANCE won the 1997 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.
The Grammy Award-winning soundtrack to the popular Riverdance stage show has been re-released with a bonus remix of "Riverdance," as well as deluxe packaging which includes photographs from the show. Bill Whelan, who has worked for twenty years as a composer, producer, and arranger (his credits include work for Kate Bush, Hothouse Flowers, Van Morrison, and U2, among others), achieved international recognition for RIVERDANCE.
Whelan incorporates a variety of ethnic musical traditions as well as modern and choral music and the hypnotic, rhythmic hard-shoe Irish dancing for which RIVERDANCE is famous. This album traverses the continents, assembling an amazing group of international and Irish musicians. Standouts include the Irish choral group Anuna performing "Shivna," a haunting piece whose Irish lyrics are based on an 11th Century text.
Recorded at Windmill Lane Studios, Dublin, Ireland.
Personnel: Bill Whelan (arranger, handclaps); Juan Reina Gonzalez (vocals, handclaps); Aine Ui Cheallaigh (vocals); Des Moore (guitar); Rafael Riqueni (Spanish guitar, handclaps); Eileen Ivers (acoustic & electric fiddles); Maire Breatnach (fiddle); Nikola Parov (gadulka, kaval); Davy Spillane (whistle, Uilleann pipes); Ronan Browne (Uilleann pipes); Cormac Breatnach ...

| | Amethystium Odonata CD (2001)
Moments
$12.75 This is the debut album from Amethystium which received a groundswell of support from online listeners, to the tune of a half million downloads before its official release. The album is attributed to Oystein Ramfjord, a composer from Norway who makes ambient electronic music full of mystifying sounds. The opening song, "Opaque," begins with an incredible underwater sonar pulse that makes way for passages of Indian vocals that are very reminiscent of Deep Forest. In fact, most songs employ well-crafted samples of ethnic music from disparate regions. These are held together by a steady synth percussion and sweeping vocals. The speaker phasing on "Enchantment" is particularly effective when listeners are wearing headphones, allowing the rich drones and sparkling tabla patterns to become multi-dimensional. "Arcane Voices" uses Gregorian sounding chants cloaked in danceable ...
| | Adonis Rose Song For Donise CD (1998)
Moments
$14.55 A veteran of groups led by trumpeters Terence Blanchard and Nicholas Payton, this is drummer Adonis Rose's debut as a leader. For Song for Donise, he gathered his colleagues from Payton's quintet -- Payton, tenor saxophonist Tim Warfield, pianist Anthony Wonsey, and bassist Reuben Rogers -- to perform five post-bop originals, two standards, and one jazz classic, Miles Davis and Wayne Shorter's "ESP," played at an incredibly fast tempo. As this is a working band that has toured regularly and has recorded under Payton's name on Verve, the group's sound becomes the recording's focus, although the feel seems looser and more energetic than on Payton's recordings, best exemplified by the interplay between Payton and Warfield on "Dia's Blues," an up-tempo number on which Payton and Warfield play different melodies and solo collectively. Other highlights include Wonsey's "Seventy Ninth Street," an up-tempo swinger built on some well-placed drum hits on which Wonsey quotes Leon Parker's "B.B.B.B" during his solo, and the Shorter-ish "Reflections," also written by Wonsey. This is a very good debut from a fine young musician. ~ Greg Turner
New Orleans drummer gained fame in Nicholas Payton's group - here he debuts, feat. Payton on trumpet, as well as Tim Warfield & Anthony Wonsey

| | Hedwig & The Angry Inch Hedwig And The Angry Inch CD (1999)
Moments
$8.39 HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.
In the world of rock theater, HEDWIG, the show that took New York by storm, is about as close as the '90s ever got to real rock & roll. Miles away from the mannered pop of RENT, HEDWIG's engine runs on hard-hitting glam-rock with occasional touches of post-punk and hard rock. Thematically, one might make an association with the ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW, but the only thing the two share is a main character of "dubious gender." Hedwig is the frontman/woman for the Angry Inch, and he/she deals very graphically with the subject of transexuality. The good-natured decadence of Rocky Horror seems like a candy store daydream compared to the dark, postmodern emotional landscape that dominates HEDWIG. Those who long for the golden days of Bowie and T. Rex with a bit of a '90s update will enjoy both the show and the album, as will anyone with a taste for the dark underbelly of modern sexuality.
Original score composed by Stephen Trask.
Includes liner notes by Danny Fields.
Principal cast: John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig, Tommy Gnosis); Miriam Shor (Yitzak); Stephen Trask (Skszp); Chris Weilding (Krzyzhtoff); Scott Bilbrey (Jacek); David McKinley (Schlatko).

| | Ted Keegan Sings CD (2001)
Moments
$12.15 Since his Broadway debut in the musical Sweeney Todd, singer Ted Keegan has appeared in a variety of roles for the musical stage, not the least of which was as the deformed musician in the Phantom of the Opera. For his first solo album, Keegan understandably sticks with what he knows best, songs from musical plays, favoring those by Fred Ebb and John Kander. While there are some familiar songs present, Keegan dwells mostly on songs which may be from big musicals, but not necessarily the hits of the show. One of these is a rollicking "Sit Down You're Rockin' the Boat," the Salvation Army thumper from Guys and Dolls. There are also songs from musicals neither which were smashes nor are especially remembered for any particular song, such as "A Quiet Thing" delivered by Keegan in a heartfelt manner accompanied by the acoustic guitar of Michael Holland. Keegan, with his powerful but flexible and expressive voice, throws himself completely into each song on this distinctive play list, irrespective of origin or notoriety. The result is that this album has some of the attributes usually reserved for a classical lieder recital. The way the singer shapes each of the songs, giving each tune a separate set of characteristics rather than trying to pull all of them under a single performing umbrella, also says much about why Keegan has been so successful in a wide variety of roles for the musical stage. He is sadly apologetic and poignant on "I Don't Remember You" and floats on top of Steve Kenyon's flute on "Some Girls." One of the fun items is an old-time music hall rendition of "Sara Lee." Keegan is pure entertainer through and through and this ...
