This classic song from the Tokens is backed with three b-sides.
The Tokens hit big in 1962 with "The Lion Sleeps Tonight (Wimoweh)," a recasting of a South African tune that had been an earlier hit for the Weavers (the song had actually been written by Zulu songwriter Solomon Linda and was originally entitled "Mbude"). Infectious and full of a kind of vaguely eerie and ominous wisdom, the song has been a hit many times over in various hands. The Tokens, for their part, tried to repeat the trick several times (although without the lions) in such songs as "A Tale of Two Lovers," "B'wanina," and "Monkey Vendor," all of which are included here in this brief collection from RCA Victor. None of these songs captured the allure of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," however, although "Water Prayer" is certainly intriguing and "A Bird Flies out of Sight (Felicidad)" demonstrates a succinct poetic lyric that is certainly a rarity in pop music. There are also two sort of mildly interesting hot rod tunes here, "Little Hot Rod Susie" and "Little Snow White Coupe," that are no more ridiculous than most of the other songs in the genre, and "Little Snow White Coupe" actually affords the listener a unintentionally fascinating study in the psychology of loving inanimate objects. This collection is far too brief to be the essential Tokens purchase, but as an exercise in how a group tries to follow up a huge hit, it is instructive and surprisingly listenable. ~ Steve Leggett
Pretty short weight on this ten-track compilation of early-'60s material. After the title track, you get a few "Wimoweh" soundalikes, a couple of odd hot rod numbers that try to imitate the Beach Boys, and a version of "Sincerely" arranged to sound as much as possible like their first hit, "Tonight I Fell in Love." That hit, by the way, isn't here, as it wasn't recorded for RCA. ~ Richie Unterberger
French exclusive 24-bit remastered reissue features four tracks, 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight', 'Tina', 'Sincerely', & 'When Summer Is Through', packaged with original artwork. Magic Records.
Recorded between July 21, 1961 and December 16, 1963.
The French import preserves the original artwork.

Lion Sleeps Tonight album
$11.18 After his aborted, internet-leaked 2008 album, 12 PLAY: 4TH QUARTER, R. Kelly busied himself with guest spots for Beyonce, T-Pain, and Kanye West, even offering a free download on iTunes, "I Believe," inspired by the election of president Barack Obama. While such moves insured that Kelly would never stray far from the R&B throne he's occupied for more than a decade, his 2009 reboot ...

Lion Sleeps Tonight music CDs
$8.99 Pink's insistently hooky, attitude-filled pop-rock has kept the singer a fixture on the radio and on singles charts since the early 2000s. The artist's fifth effort, FUNHOUSE, doesn't tamper with the formula: Pink's powerhouse vocals and in-your-face approach, backed by stadium-sized production, are in full effect on all 12 tracks. Even though ...

| | Joss Stone Colour Me Free! CD (2009) Import
Lion Sleeps Tonight CD music
$30.38 The "free" in the title to Joss Stone's fourth album apparently refers to the neo-singer breaking free from the shackles of her major label, EMI, who apparently have not let Joss be Joss. That this constricting argument happens to be the exact same story line Stone used for 2007's Introducing Joss Stone, the splashy diva power trip meant to unveil the "real" singer, is conveniently forgotten, as is the modern R&B of that makeover, with Joss returning to all the retro-soul of her ...

| | Rio De Janeiro Jazz Trio Bop Till You Drop CD (1979)
Lion Sleeps Tonight songs
$10.89 This was the first all-digital recording released by a major label.
Following his conceptual 1978 release, Jazz, Ry Cooder returned the next year with the R&B/soul-based Bop Till You Drop. The first major-label, digitally recorded album, Bop is a nice set of moderately known to obscure tunes from the '50s and '60s (along with a Cooder/Tim Drummond original) that doesn't always live up to its promise. Cooder and his excellent band, which includes the rhythm section of Tim Drummond and Jim Keltner along with guitarist David Lindley, understand the material and are more than capable of laying down a decent groove, but something must have gotten lost in translation from what was played to what came across on the recording. There's a thinness to the tracks that undermines the performances, which according to Cooder is due ...
| | Tina Turner Simply The Best CD (1991)
Lion Sleeps Tonight album
$15.65 There's good news and (just a little) bad news about this Tina Turner greatest hits package. The good news is that what's here is across the board terrific stuff, from her stunning update of Ann Peebles simmering r&b classic "I Can't Stand the Rain," to the more rock oriented songs like "Better Be Good to Me" (the most convincing imperative in all of recorded music) and ""What's Love Got to Do With It". Best of all, the version of "River Deep-Mountain ...
| | 5 Royales It's Hard But It's Fair: The King Hits And Rarities CD (2005) (Import) United Kingdom
Lion Sleeps Tonight CD music
$18.25 Although this compilation does indeed contain both hits and rarities, it has more value to the collector looking for rarities than it does to the more general fan looking for the best "5" Royales anthology. While some of their biggest hits and most well-known songs are here (particularly "Think," "Dedicated to the One I Love," and "Tell the Truth"), it's missing some of their R&B chart singles. Nor does it have any of the material (including a few R&B smashes) they recorded in the early 1950s for Apollo, being wholly devoted to sides they ...
