| | Pink Martini Sympathique CD (1997)
Le Petit Roi music CDs
$13.89 The first album by Portland, Oregon's tongue in cheek lounge pop orchestra Pink Martini, SYMPATHIQUE, was originally released in 1997 on the band's own Heinz label. Although the album contains two originals by singer China Forbes and pianist Thomas Lauderdale, the title track and "Lullaby," the bulk of the album's 12 songs consists of new arrangements of loungy favorites like "Never On Sunday," "Que Sera Sera," "Brazil," and "Song of the Black Lizard," taken from the soundtrack of a Japanese cult film. Unlike contemporaries such as Combustible Edison, Pink Martini had the musical chops and heartfelt love of the style to keep the album from descending into snarky kitsch. In 2009, Heinz Records released the first ever vinyl edition of the album.
Recorded at Stiles Recording Studio, Portland, Oregon, from December 1996 to April 1997.
Pink Martini: China Forbes, Thomas Lauderdale.
Personnel: China Forbes (vocals); Dan Faehnle (guitar); Aaron Meyer (violin); David Eby (cello); Gavin Bondy (trumpet); Robert Taylor (trombone); Thomas Lauderdale (piano); ...

| | Yasmin Levy Mano Suave CD (2007)
Le Petit Roi CD music
$13.49 Yasmin Levy has proved herself to be the leading exponent of Ladino song (Ladino is the language of the Sephardic Jews whose roots are in Spain). However, her previous albums have never quite captured her potential. This time, though, she's hit the spot, finding both the intensity of performance and delicacy of arrangement that's been her hallmark. The style is a mix of influences that blend perfectly -- listen carefully and you can hear traces of flamenco nestled alongside Middle Eastern music, with influences from around the Mediterranean liberally scattered across the sound. Her voice is in glorious form, with a depth of purity that illustrates just how she's matured and fully grown into her ability. Her own band, now well bedded-in, is superb and sympathetic, but there are some surprising additions (Paraguayan harp, anyone?). Natacha Atlas weighs in for a duet on the title ...
| | Glen Campbell Wichita Lineman CD (1968) Remastered
Le Petit Roi music CDs
$5.89 Digitally remastered by Bob Norberg & Rob Christie (Capitol Mastering).
The most eclectic of Glen Campbell's late-1960s albums, and his first number one LP, 1968's WICHITA LINEMAN runs from the orchestral melodrama of the title track--the signature song of Glen Campbell's entire career, apart from perhaps "Rhinestone Cowboy"--and the follow-up hit "Dreams of the Everyday Housewife" to a wide variety of covers in some unexpected styles. These include excellent takes of Tim Hardin's "Reason to Believe" (possibly the best of the many covers of Hardin's definitive original), a Dean Martin-like middle-of-the-road version of Sonny Curtis's "The Straight Life," and Sonny Bono's divorce saga "You Better Sit Down Kids." More unexpectedly, Campbell ...

| | Frank D'Rone After The Ball CD (1960) Remastered; Digipak
Le Petit Roi album
$9.89 Though Frank D'Rone must have appreciated the critical comparisons to Frank Sinatra, his 1960 Mercury LP After the Ball sounds more like the work of Bobby Darin, the deep crooner with the angelic face then making waves with his nightclub act and live record, Darin at the Copa. D'Rone, a former guitarist, also bears the mark of Mel Tormé (a true musician's singer), shaping his notes to fit the mood and constantly making conscious decisions to twist a well-worn standard into a new thing. Though singers like him and Darin represented the new face of swinging pop, D'Rone explores deep into the past for these songs; the title track alone was over ...
