Master Of The Stratosphere Music Maynard Ferguson Master Of The Stratosphere Songs Master Of The Stratosphere Music Master Of The Stratosphere Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) true fusion Too bad he didn't have his road band with him on this album; or at least the chunks from Chaemeleon. I like MF's music, his selection, and again, I feel like his niche in the genre suffers a bit because he used studio cats, who were marvels, but it's just that MF's music suffers, I think, in an environment (a la Hollywood) that is just so over-produced; i.e. Columbia's just "one more hit, baby" dynamic. Master Of The Stratosphere album
$10.49 Maynard Ferguson's version of "Birdland" from this LP was a bit of a hit and he fares fairly well on "Stella by Starlight" and "Over the Rainbow," but overall this typically commercial Columbia album is of lesser interest. MF, at the height of his popularity, was clearly looking for a hit, which is why he recorded "Theme from Battlestar Galactica" and roughly half of the poppish material on this rather forgettable effort. The trumpeter/bandleader would record worse albums than this LP, but this one is weak enough. ~ Scott Yanow
Popular. A big seller, but weak from the jazz standpoint. ~ Ron Wynn
Maynard Ferguson has been considered one of the premier jazz trumpet virtuosos for over 4 decades! He has a cult following of trumpet players all over the world. He has released numerous albums over those years, his most popular being on the Columbia label in the 70's and 80's. Carnival was originally issued in 1978 and reached # 113 on the Billboard ...
| | Maynard Ferguson Primal Scream CD (1976)
Master Of The Stratosphere CD music
$10.49 An all-star cast assists Maynard Ferguson in this disco-tinged big-band outing. Ferguson's trademark trumpet playing is featured in all its screaming glory, and Mark Colby contributes a couple of high-energy sax solos. "Primal Scream" and "Invitation" sound as though they were lifted right off the mid-'70s disco dancefloor, complete with T.S.O.P.-type strings and pulsing rhythms. "Pagliacci," too, has the disco beat pounding underneath a Jay Chattaway adaptation of an operatic melody, with Bobby Militello featured on an energetic, overblown flute solo. Chick Corea's "The Cheshire Cat Walk" sounds like latter-day Return to Forever, as Corea's synth trades licks with Ferguson's horn over a familiar RTF ...

| | Surrender To The Air CD (1996)
Master Of The Stratosphere music CDs
$9.29 The musicians roam open fields, leaving no dissonant stone unturned and no rhythmic tangent unexplored. They have no call for any sort of structure; four of the album's nine selections are even entitled "And Furthermore," as much a desire not to bother with formal names as an admission of musical long-windedness. Often, they teeter on that ecstatic line where jazz and improvisational rock collide--horns zig-zag through labyrinths created by John Medeski's keyboards, an ever-melting backbeat and the roar of the assembly. Moments of undefinable rapture sneak up on you often on SURRENDER TO THE AIR, and just as instantly fall back into the wondrous chaos.
Since guitarist Trey Anastasio is the leader of Phish, it would seem that he would sound nearly identical to his band when he's on his own. Not so. Surrender to the Air, his first solo release, recalls a free form, improvisation-based jazz record more than hippie rock; in that sense, it is close to the actual spirit of the Grateful Dead, if not their sound. Anastasio has assembled a diverse, experimental band featuring guitarist Marc Ribot, trumpeter Michael Ray, keyboardist John Medeski, and saxophonist Marshall Allen. With such a stellar cast, it isn't surprising that Anastasio lets his fellow musicians cut loose. Everyone improvises over a loose structure, disregarding conventional notions of melody or rhythms. Though Anastasio doesn't solo as much as some of his comrades, his open-minded spirit is evident throughout the record. Though many Phish fans might not initially enjoy Surrender to the Air, the guitarist should be commended for not resting on his laurels. ...
| | Sudzert Where Do I Turn? CD (2004)
Master Of The Stratosphere songs
$14.79 Sudzert: Driven by their love for music and passion for self-expression, Matt Ross and Billy Jungifer started Sudzert early in 1997. Shortly after, the guitarists found themselves settling in with drummer Ryan Celestino. Then, at only 12 years old, Matt penned their first single "Wait," which was recorded that year at Jerk Records Studio in Middletown NJ. Within a month of release, that single had risen to "Top Ten" status on MP3.com's NJ Rock charts. The first couple years were filled with appearances at NJ favorites like The Saint and Hooligans. The three-piece advanced to the semi-finals in the Jersey Shows Battle of the Bands, gaining them the respect of many local bar owners. In 1999, Sudzert recorded their first EP, entitled The Know How. Filled with four tracks of guitar driven rock, The Know How sold extremely well and supported the band's growing fan-base. As their popularity grew, the band picked up local guitarist Mike Williams. With the addition of Mike, the band hit the studio once again and tracked 2 songs: Last Time and Absence. This demo put Sudzert on the map as a local rock powerhouse. This demo brought them to the next level and placed them in huge concerts opening for bands like SR-71, Soulfly and many others. In the summer of 2003, Kevin ...
