| | Lillix Falling Uphill CD (2003) Enhanced CD
I Heard The Bluebirds Sing/A Harvest Of Country CD music
$6.85 After Avril Lavigne contributed mightily to the decline of Britney Spears-style teen pop in favor of a more rock-based, guitar-friendly sound, the pop landscape changed mightily. In the wake of that seismic alteration comes Lillix, illustrating the notion that if one Avril is good, then four should be great. In fact, they very nearly beat A.V. at her own game. While they are no slouches in either the accessible pop hooks department or in camera-friendliness, they frequently come a lot closer than you-know-who to genuinely punky moments. Imagine if you will a cleaned-up, image-consulted version of the Donnas and you'll be on the right track. And while Lavigne's rock memory seems to go back no further than Blink 182, Lillix closes FALLING UPHILL with a cover of a classic from new wave/power-pop cult heroes the Romantics ("What I Like About You"), giving those old enough to remember the first days of MTV a glimmer of hope for the future.
2003 debut from four Canadian girls, three of them teenagers, writers as well as performers, brought together by heavyweights who have worked with Alanis Morissette, Pink, Avril Lavigne, ...
| | Josephine Foster & The Supposed All The Leaves Are Gone CD (2004)
I Heard The Bluebirds Sing/A Harvest Of Country music CDs
$12.85 Placing All the Leaves Are Gone in the CD player is a little like a time warp. Is the album a reissue of an obscure '60s group from San Francisco? Or is it, perhaps, a contemporary recording (2004) that evokes yesteryear? In the case of Josephine Foster & the Supposed, it's the latter. The easiest comparison would be to Jefferson Airplane, circa 1967, with out of kilter melodies in minor keys and the guitars barely in tune. Foster plays the part of Grace Slick here, but she sounds more like Maddy Prior on acid. Her hippie, drug-induced vocal delivery is supported by the Supposed, who are guitarist/bassist Brian Goodman and drummer Rusty Peterson. While instrumental parts seem to have been dubbed here and there on All the Leaves Are Gone, the arrangements are mostly spare, which works well for creating a spacious sound, even when things get kind of loud. How listeners ...
| | Faith Hill There You'll Be: Best Of CD (2001) (Import) Argentina
I Heard The Bluebirds Sing/A Harvest Of Country songs
$11.65 This best-of collection includes 15 Faith Hill tracks including two remixes.
Released in 2001, There You'll Be: The Best of Faith Hill was a collection designed for international markets, intending to introduce the American superstar to the world. As such, it presents her as a pop star, including remixes of "Breathe" and "The Way You Love Me" (that are nevertheless also present in their original versions), as well as her biggest crossover hits from Breathe, Faith, and It Matters to Me. This doesn't contain all of her hits, but it contains all the big hits, along with the brand new title track and some dubious selections (why is "Over the Rainbow" here?), but on the whole, it's a good summary of her poppiest material, which is often among her best, but be forewarned -- ...
