This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
Bassist Buster Williams and his quartet perform six of his originals plus two standards on Griot Libertč. Williams' songs range from the modal "Nomads" and the medium-tempo blues "Related to One" (which includes some complex transitions) to the lyrical ballad "The Triumphant Dance of the Butterfly" and the swinging "Joined at the Hip," which has George Colligan's best solo of the set. Williams takes plenty of solos but is also generous in featuring vibraphonist Stefon Harris and pianist Colligan with drummer Lenny White being stimulating in support. There are times (particularly during "Related to One") when the group sounds a bit like the Modern Jazz Quartet, but other selections find the musicians showing more individuality. They are very much in tune with each other and, although not a touring group, sound as if they play together very regularly. Excellent modern mainstream jazz. ~ Scott Yanow

| Griot Liberte Music Review Average Rating: (3.5 out of 5 stars) Great Sound, Uninspired Music If you're already a jazz fan, you probably own a number of recordings like this, i.e. expertly played, well-arranged, competently recorded and musically varied. I call these recordings "well-crafted"; they have all the hallmarks of great jazz recordings except one: musical inspiration. This is my first recording of Buster Williams as a bandleader so I am in no position to say if this is the norm for him. Some highly respected artists, often true virtuosos on their instruments, have well-deserved reputations from making many recordings that fit the well-crafted criteria (Wynton Marsalis and Ron Carter come to mind immediately). This is not to say that either Mssrs. Marsalis, Carter or Williams is incapable of better but if that's what you're looking for from Mr. Williams, you should look elsewhere. Fantastic. A must-buy. Fantastic, wonderful advanced hard bop date with the great tone of Buster Williams, the most under-rated bassist and bandleader in jazz. There not much to say about this record - it's one of the best jazz CD's of the year - and the sound is fantastic. Just buy it. Submitted by Robert H. (Toronto, Ontario) Was This Review Helpful? | | Chris Potter Lift: Live At The Village Vanguard CD (2004)
Griot Liberte CD music
$13.75 Chris Potter's new Live at the Village Vanguard album starts jarringly enough. There is a particular knotty, unaccompanied solo saxophone intro to drummer Bill Stewart's "7.5" played via tape delay by Potter on seemingly three saxophones. He is joined by a series of freaky tones on Kevin Hays' Fender Rhodes playing what sounds like the keys on a telephone keypad to truly disorienting effect. Soon enough, however, the ensemble kicks in to fill out the rhythm, Hays switches to piano, and Potter brings the tune's melodic body into focus, swinging half-in-half-out, tightrope walking around a series of scalar figures that translate it into a wonderfully energetic ride. And this is merely the statement of purpose for the entire gig. On the original material, Potter's now truly unique voice on the tenor may have ...

| | Dave Holland Critical Mass CD (2006)
Griot Liberte CD music
$13.59 One word that comes to mind when listening to Critical Mass is generosity. Double-bassist Dave Holland, four decades into his career, could certainly be forgiven for taking the word "leader" at its literal meaning, calling all the shots and keeping his musicians at bay. But that's not what he's about, and at any given time Critical Mass could just as easily have been credited to saxist Chris Potter, trombonist Robin Eubanks, ...
