| | Buster Williams Griot Liberte CD Buster Williams Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
Bassist Buster Williams and his quartet perform six of his originals plus two standards on Griot Libertè. Williams' songs range from the modal "Nomads" and the medium-tempo blues "Related to One" (which includes some complex transitions) to the lyrical ballad "The Triumphant Dance of the Butterfly" and the swinging "Joined at the Hip," which has George Colligan's best solo of the set. Williams takes plenty of solos but is also generous in featuring vibraphonist Stefon Harris and pianist Colligan with drummer Lenny White being stimulating in support. There are times (particularly during "Related to One") when the group sounds a bit like the Modern Jazz Quartet, but other selections find the musicians showing more individuality. They are very much in tune with each other and, although not a touring group, sound as if they play together very regularly. Excellent modern mainstream jazz. ~ Scott Yanow

Buster Williams Griot Liberte Songs Griot Liberte Music Review Average Rating: (3.5 out of 5 stars) Great Sound, Uninspired Music If you're already a jazz fan, you probably own a number of recordings like this, i.e. expertly played, well-arranged, competently recorded and musically varied. I call these recordings "well-crafted"; they have all the hallmarks of great jazz recordings except one: musical inspiration. This is my first recording of Buster Williams as a bandleader so I am in no position to say if this is the norm for him. Some highly respected artists, often true virtuosos on their instruments, have well-deserved reputations from making many recordings that fit the well-crafted criteria (Wynton Marsalis and Ron Carter come to mind immediately). This is not to say that either Mssrs. Marsalis, Carter or Williams is incapable of better but if that's what you're looking for from Mr. Williams, you should look elsewhere. Fantastic. A must-buy. Fantastic, wonderful advanced hard bop date with the great tone of Buster Williams, the most under-rated bassist and bandleader in jazz. There not much to say about this record - it's one of the best jazz CD's of the year - and the sound is fantastic. Just buy it. Submitted by Robert H. (Toronto, Ontario) Was This Review Helpful? Griot Liberte CD music
$7.99 The Rudy Van Gelder Edition of SPEAK NO EVIL includes an essay by Bob Blumenthal.
This is part of the Blue Note Rudy Van Gelder Editions series.
SPEAK NO EVIL is a significant recording for two main reasons. Firstly, it is one of the first in a long string of stunning solo sessions by Shorter that showcase both his masterful saxophone abilities and his eclectic compositional style away from the leadership of Art Blakey and Miles Davis. Secondly, it combines ...
| | Madeleine Peyroux Dreamland CD (1996)
Griot Liberte music CDs
$8.55 All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
Singer-songwriter Madeleine Peyroux's soulful voice is occupied so palpably by the spirit of Billie Holiday that it's almost scary. Peyroux is certainly influenced by the song and voice of Bessie Smith as well, but she approaches the material on her major-label debut from an entirely modern perspective, with strength and individuality as well as a hint of playfulness, like a stylish young ...

Griot Liberte album
$7.85 Digitally remastered by Dennis Ferrante (BMG Recording Studios in July 1990).

| | Gretchen Parlato In A Dream CD (2009)
Griot Liberte CD music
$12.05 Gretchen Parlato is a rising star in vocal jazz circles of the 2000s who everyone should pay attention to and enjoy. Her singing is pure sterling silver, accented with just a hint of ethnic shadings and a big helping of modern style that goes well beyond standard fare. As alluring, distinct, and mature as her youthful instrument is, she deserves extra credit for choosing some of the most interesting young players who also are ascending to major-league status. Guitarist/vocalist ...
