Dutton Vocalion reissues two of Ted Heath's mid-'60s best-sellers. The strange thing is that while these are both jazz records, they both sound like upscale exotica albums. Heath's band was made up of crack British sessionmen, and he ruled the orchestra roost with an iron hand. The sounds themselves, however, on Pow! (1966) and Big Band Spirituals are rather more relaxed and laid-back. That, however, doesn't make these records good ones. In fact, quite the opposite. The more Heath tried to walk the line between pop for big bands -- on Pow! he does "It's Not Unusual," and "Hit the Road Jack," and they sound more like King Richard's Fluegel Knights or a mutant Herb Alpert group than a solid jazz group. The Big Band Spirituals album (1964), complete with British gospel singers, is terrifically bad and utterly grotesque in its overuse of tempos, textures, and the way it murders the material.
