When an industrial band tries really, really hard to be as scary as possible, it's almost impossible not to respond with either a yawn or a giggle. Because really, people -- this is pop music. Unless you're really serious about all the crypto-fascist imagery, there's really nothing to be scared of. (If you are serious about the crypto-fascist imagery, then it would be scary if you're a politician; if you're a band, it's just gross.) So despite the Gothic lettering and the Maltese crosses and the vultures and the scowling, shaven-headed singer wearing a monocle, and despite the growly German accent and the creepy/goofy slogans ("Beware! Free the world from the fascism of peace!"), the latest album from the Retrosic is really just a bunch of apocalyptic play-acting designed to appeal to unhappy teenagers who want to add a frisson of danger to their musical experimentation. The occasional silly lyric notwithstanding (sample couplet: "You don't have a soul to sell/Because your world is just called Hell"), the songs are generally not bad, and the instrumentals are especially nice; the relatively funky and complex "Sphere" is probably the album's highlight track. The rest will appeal to anyone who feels a little thrill in the stomach at the sight of a scowling, shaven-headed German wearing a monocle. ~ Rick Anderson

$13.85 Although the band is beloved of goth kids and darkwave aficionados, Razed in Black has always been more complex than that; the group has been featured on electro-clash, neo-goth and disco/techno compilations, and its new album includes stylistic shout-outs to everyone from Depeche Mode (on the lovely "Come Back to ...
| | KMFDM WW III CD (2003)
God Of Hell
$12.05 The most frustrating thing about WWIII is that it's so darn inconsistent. Kicking off with the Atari Teenage Riot-sounding and George Bush Jr.-sampling title track, WWIII sounds like it's going to be an inspired affair. The Bush-led Iraqi war has given KMFDM plenty of fuel for their disdain toward America circa 2003, so listeners with differing views will find little to like about the lyrics. On the fierce "Jihad," the band paints the human race as "a dying species" that is "poor sick dumb numb feeding on feces." Lucia Cifarelli's vocal and songwriting contributions are excellent (the forgettable tracks don't feature her writing), and her near-pop "From Here on Out" ends up as the highlight ...

| | KMFDM Xtort CD (1996) Remastered
God Of Hell
$11.59 XTORT doesn't sound markedly different than KMFDM's other releases -- there are still the bruising mechanical drum beats and numbingly drilling guitars, combined with barked vocals. What's noticeable about XTORT -- their first album since industrial broke into the Top 40 with Nine Inch Nails' The Downward Spiral -- is how the band made no concessions to the pop/rock mainstream whatsoever. They are still the same grimy, dank heavy dance band they were in the '80s. For some listeners, that means they're keeping the flame burning and, to a certain extent, they'd be right -- KMFDM sounds as good as they ever have, and several tracks rank among their best. But, over a decade into their career, it would be nice to hear the band branch out and start to experiment a little bit more. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
