Welsh combo Funeral for a Friend pushes metal to the bottom for Casually Dressed & Deep in Conversation, its ambitious debut full-length. The chugging riffs are there, yes. But Funeral's heavy metal guitar lines are only guides for the surging melodies and sing/scream dynamics common to the new nation of post-hardcore rocket operators. From Autumn to Ashes, Alexisonfire -- these are just a couple of the band's peers in this, both offering their own versions of what's become a signature sound. For their part, it's Funeral's melodic sense that defines them. After all the stereotypical screaming and the heart-immolating lyrics ("I'm dying here in front of you"; "And in my hands our blood recovered"), cuts like "Escape Artists Never Die" and "Waking Up" are still pretty damn hooky. Vocalist Matt Davies even has a bit of Brandon Boyd's willowy soulfulness. Despite its overdramatic title, "Bend Your Arms to Look Like Wings" plays its metallic rhythms perfectly off a relentlessly triumphant chorus. "Storytelling" layers a rack of full-blown backup harmonies over its chunky power chords, while "Red Is the New Black" returns to the old raw throat/heartsick singer standby. The common elements in Funeral for a Friend's sound need some seasoning to keep up with their powerful melodies. But Casually Dressed is still a solid debut, and proves that there's hope for Welsh rock beyond Lostprophets. ~ Johnny Loftus

Casually Dressed And In Deep Conversation Music Review Average Rating: (4.1 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews A Mature Record by an Awesome band A more melodic approach to song-writing which i think is better than their ep "between order and model". musically it is insane, darren and kris never failing to keep riff-metal alive. so many good songs, can't chose a favourite. if you liked this album check out "the poison" by bullet for my valentine, another metal band from south-wales Submitted by daniel (auckland,nz) Was This Review Helpful? amzing... beginning to end anyone who says this cd is like all the others obviously didnt listen to this cd and must have lied about listening to it. ive listened to the radio and have heard all the simple plans and every other crappy bands they play. funeral for a friend is a band driven by emotion and their raw love for their music, unlike 99% of every other band out their in it for the money and pussy. they create riffs that stop time when you hear it and leave you in solitude with the music alone. when i heard this cd, "casually dressed and deep in conversation," it immediately became one of my all time favourites right along side with thursday's "full collapse." i have rarely heard a band that expresses themselves so clearly and so decisively. anyone who says they are like all other bands must listen to green day or my chemical romance and should stop listening to the radio before they venture out to seek REAL MUSIC. funeral is real and will comtinue to make music that is fully inspired unlike many bands which try to be 25% of what they already are. en Europa no hay buena musica? Great emo album! I just want to say... this is a great emo album. It turns boring at the first time, but when you hear it two or three times, you'll just fall in love with it. George man, what did you heard? Vocals!, they're sooo cool man.
You have to got it! Submitted by structure_of_souls (Bogotá, Colombia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
