| | Tribute To Tool CD
This Big Eye Records tribute to Tool seems a little slapdash. O.H.M.'s version of "Bottom" is an appropriately vengeful opener, and Sixdeep sounds like a female-fronted 311 on their cover of the Aenima bulldozer "Pushit." But Tool fanatics will recognize Haujobb's "Die Eier von Satan" from the Cleopatra label's 2002 Tool tribute, and what's going on with this set's "Roots of Tool" section? Though it's billed to Jimmy Page, "Wailing Sounds" is actually taken from the campy, screwy 1970 album he did with Londontown hanger-on Lord Sutch called Lord Sutch and Heavy Friends. Then there's "Mexican Sangwich" from Faith No More affiliate Jim Martin, and a solo cut from Black Sabbath drummer Bill Ward. There's no denying the influence of Zeppelin, Faith, and Sabbath on the boys in Tool. But chocking the end of this already spotty tribute with songs only tangentially connected to those bands' legacies seems a little suspect. ~ Johnny Loftus

Tribute To Tool album
$21.00 Comprised of 18 tracks culled from the singer/composer's first three decades, The Very Best of Enya was pieced together by the artist herself, along with longtime collaborators Nicky and Roma Ryan. Luckily, the trio seems enamored by most of the same songs that the general public is, resulting in one of those rare "greatest-hits" collections that goes deep without depriving the listener of the essentials. With tunes like "Orinoco Flow," "Caribbean Blue," and "Book of Days" in the pot and out of the way, it's easier to appreciate hidden gems like "Cursum Perficio," "Boadicea," "Trains and Winter Rains," and "Anywhere Is." Also notable is the inclusion of "May It Be" and a previously unreleased version of "Aníron (I Desire)," both of which originally appeared on the soundtrack for the first chapter of Peter Jackson's beloved Lord of the Rings trilogy. ~ James Christopher Monger

| | Throwdown Deathless CD (2009)
Tribute To Tool album
$12.99 Throwdown have had to eat a lot of crap in recent years because their vocalist, Dave Peters, is doing such a blatant, idolatrous imitation of Pantera/Down vocalist Phil Anselmo. It doesn't help that with 2005's Vendetta they shifted from the thick-necked, straight-edge hardcore of their early catalog to a version of the "groove metal" practiced by Pantera, Trivium, and other modern metal bands. On this latest album, though, Peters occasionally shifts from imitating Anselmo to imitating Anselmo-imitating- Mudvayne's Chad Gray. The music, too, has a lot of Mudvayne's combination of groove and progressive epic-ness, coupled with Pantera's ultra-punishing, almost industrial ...
| | Stryper Yellow And Black Attack CD (1984)
Tribute To Tool CD music
$8.49 When church leaders were accusing heavy metal of encouraging Satanism, Stryper set out to prove that metal and hard rock could be used to promote Christianity. The southern California band was viewed with suspicion by both ministers (who refused to believe that Christianity and metal were compatible) and fellow headbangers -- and yet, Stryper managed to sell millions of albums to both Christian and secular audiences. Stryper's first release, The Yellow and Black Attack!, showed the rockers to be along the lines of Def Leppard and Quiet Riot musically, but not lyrically. On such ...

Joni Mitchell's most controversial album is the infamous MINGUS. A tribute to the legendary jazz bassist of the same name, this is an intriguing meeting of Joni's sultry, burnished vocals and some of the best modern jazz musicians, at the intersection of pop and jazz. Critics in both the rock and jazz worlds unjustly dismissed the record as an attempt by Mitchell to exploit Mingus or to needlessly elevate pop to a more sophisticated level.
Mitchell's voice is well suited to the moody jazz melody of Mingus' "A Chair In The Sky." The melodic comments of the masterful Jaco Pastorius' fretless bass weave their way seductively through Joni's melancholy interpretation of "Sweet Sucker Dance." The high point of the album, however, is the ...

Tribute To Tool songs
$15.09 The kings of speed metal have never been keen on being labeled, and LOAD, which follows up the 1991 mega-hit METALLICA, is a surprising pastiche of sonic fury. Metallica still rocks hard. James Hetfield's lyrics are still full of venom and anger, and the music still could scare ...
