After a New York harbor patrolman is murdered at the hands of a flesh-hungry ghoul aboard what was believed to be an abandoned yacht, Anne (Tisa Farrow)--the daughter of the ship's missing owner--teams up with a newspaper reporter named Peter West (Ian McCulloch) for a private investigation. With the help of a pair of sightseers, they travel to the secluded Caribbean island of Matul, where Anne's father was last seen conducting medical research. There, they meet his colleague, Dr. Menard (Richard Johnson), who frantically attempts to find a scientific explanation for a phenomenon that has plagued the island; it seems as if the dead refuse to stay dead. The locals believe a voodoo curse is at work as scores of animated corpses rise from their graves to hungrily seek out live flesh. Anne learns her father has died, but before she and the others can return to civilization, they are forced into battle with a plethora of bloodthirsty zombies.
Italian maestro Lucio Fulci's most lucrative outing features an abundance of shockingly gruesome sequences filmed in the director's regular close-up style, wasting none of frequent collaborator Giannetto De Rossi's amazing makeup effects. The ominous synthesizer soundtrack by Fabio Frizzi splendidly shrouds the action with simplistic, yet catchy hooks that are sure to continue buzzing in viewer's mind long after the film's spine-chilling ending. Released abroad as a sequel to George A. Romero's DAWN OF THE DEAD, produced by Dario Argento in Italy as ZOMBI. Filmed in Dominican Republic; Rome, Italy; and New York, New York.
Unrated release in America, no one under 17 admitted.
The make-up crew applied a thin layer of clay to the extras performing as zombies who would then be required to sit in the sun to dry. The cast and crew dubbed them "the walking flower pots".
Although released in Italy as a sequel to DAWN OF THE DEAD (a.k.a. ZOMBI), Romero's film is already considered the second part of a trilogy beginning with NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD in 1968 and ending with DAY OF THE DEAD in 1985.
The stuntman scheduled to play a zombie in the underwater shark attack became too frightened to shoot the scene. In an effort to stay on schedule, Fulci quickly employed the shark's trainer to fill in.
Scottish actor Ian Mc Colluch shot his scenes in New York "illegally" after the American Embassy refused to grant him a temporary work visa.
Director Lucio Fulci cites the American films VOODOO ISLAND, I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE, and THE WALKING DEAD as inspirational to the filming of ZOMBIE.
ZOMBIE is the fist of three Italian horror films of which actor Ian Mc Colluch would star. The others, ZOMBIE HOLOCAUST in 1980 and ALIEN CONTAMINATION in 1981 were the last Italian genre films for McColluch.
The sequel ZOMBIE 3 began with Fulci in the director's chair, but after a succession of disagreements with the screenwriter and producer he walked off the set leaving Bruno Mattei to complete the project. Zombie Movie Review Average Rating: (3.8 out of 5 stars) Now this is a zombie movie! This movie is great! It's got everything which a Zombie movie fan would love. Great Zombies with great Zombie make up, some really good gore scenes. Also the DVD picture quality is really good, which makes for a much better viewing pleasure. It's really hard to beleive with the great make up and and stuff that this movie was done in the 70's cause especially the zombies look very real. I recomend any zombie fan, who has not seen this movie to buy it. Also thanks to CD Universe for offering this movie at such a great price! Just one small things, i wish they had more stuff on the extra option on the DVD. Well i guess you can't have it all, but just the movie alone and the price is worth is. one of the best one of the best horror movies ever...
full of unespected scenes, especially the scene when zombie is fighting against the shark, and scene when Tisa Farrow was losing her eye..... Submitted by gandalf (california) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Thematically, atmospherically... a genuine zombie flick! No... it's not Dawn of the Dead... and it's good thing at that! This film was made as the Europeans make them, sans the unnecessary melodrama and dialogue found in our horror flicks. Zombie is all about the atmosphere: tropical islands, mad scientists, scantily-clad women, droning soundtrack (a good element), and the most creepy design of zombie appearance EVER put on film. From the rising of long-dead conquistadors to the newly dead-and-come-back characters... this film as utilizes elements no other "zombie" film has - but should have! Yes, I'll say it... 'better than Dawn of the Dead' (though of course a superb film in it's own right). Submitted by The Guerrilla (Western PA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Don't waste your time. I purchased this because of a BRAVO TV special about the 100 greatest horror movie moments. Except for the splinter in the eye scene, this one's a real yawn. Buy something else! Submitted by lszafranski (Pittsburgh, PA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.
GREAT ZOMBIE MOVIE!! This is a great Lucio Fulci zombie flick! If you’re a zombie fan then this movie is definitely one to add to your collection. The zombie make-up and FX are really impressive given the fact “Zombie” was made back in the day...and the “eyeball” scene is guaranteed to make you quiver. Add this one to your collection and buy it! Definitely worth a 5 star rating!! Submitted by JD (CA,USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful. $3.19 Dr. Norman Boyle (Paolo Malco), of the New York Historical Society, accepts a research assignment abandoned by a colleague who has committed suicide. The project requires the researcher to temporarily take up residence in a New England mansion along with his wife, Lucy (Katherine MacColl) and their son, Bob (Giovanni Frezza). Norman discovers his colleague had become consumed with the history of the home's original owner, a turn-of-the-Century surgeon named Dr. Freudstein who possessed a fondness for illegal experiments. Further investigation reveals Freudstein had found a way to stay alive by using cells derived from fresh human blood. The Boyles find out the hard way that the maggot-stuffed, undead doctor remains lurking in the shadows of the house, killing anybody who crosses his path.
While the plot does at times lose itself to vagueness and the inexplicable, Italian director Lucio Fulci reinforces his "Godfather Of Gore" moniker as visceral sequences (human mutilation aplenty, along with a gut-wrenching decapitation) unfold before the camera in the maestro's customary extreme close-up style. Made during the height of his career, HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY is one of Fulci's most admired favorites. A percentage of the film's popularity must also be credited to the inadvertently humorous English dubbing of Italian child star Giovanni Frezza's "Bob" character, performed by a much older female actress.

Zombie review
$10.05 Peter Jackson, master of subversive comedy, presents the story of a hapless young man whose overbearing mother gets him into a heap of trouble when she catches a bizarre zombie virus and starts turning innocent passersby into walking corpses. This grandiose splatterfest features loads of unforgettable, stomach-turning effects. Highlights include a ghoulish, bloodthirsty baby, zombie mutilation, progressive putrefaction, and an off-the-wall undead mating scene. Sick, twisted, and hilarious, DEAD ALIVE is unlike anything you have ever seen before--and is definitely not for the squeamish.
