The entire landmark sci-fi event is now a stunning two-disc set! Starring Rock Hudson, this exciting and timely epic follows the first settlers of Mars as they discover the shocking secrets of the red planet! Based on Ray Bradbury's sweeping sci-fi classic, this 1979 mini-series details the mystery, wonder and horror of humankind's attempts to leave Earth and establish a new culture on Mars. Scientists travel to Mars to study its atmosphere and terrain, and decide that earthlings can dwell safely in this new environment--but some in the group learn that an alien life form might exist beneath the planet's surface. Everyone will eventually learn that the colonization of Mars might not be welcomed by its present inhabitants...and with good reason. This epic television production originally aired in three parts. Science Fiction with Intelligence and Imagination Ray Bradbury's fantastic fable of the future is what good science fiction should be instead of simple minded Star Wars type special effects escapism. Submitted by jhnstich (Houston, Texas) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Intriguing I really love this TV mini-series. It's a crying shame that the rather limited budget resulted in some pretty cheap-looking sets. Still, if one can look beyond this 'flaw' and allow themselves to become involved, I'm sure they will get a great deal from The Martian Chronicles. It's well acted, has a great storyline and most of the sets and scenes are quite well presented. Rock Hudson, I feel, was at his peak (both in health and acting ability) at the time of this series. In fact, the majority of the cast play their roles extremely well. I'm not sure whether or not The Martian Chronicles is available in the DVD format necessary for Australian use. Maybe someone could fill me in on this.

$9.85 Aliens with nice faces and reptilian habits descend over the earth bringing a new and menacing world order with them in this landmark television miniseries. Sixty-five million viewers reportedly viewed the original broadcast. Disguised to look just like humans, the aliens are actually lizard-like creatures out to strip the planet of its water supply and turn humans into food. Although most ...
| | Day The Earth Stood Still DVD (1951)
Martian Chronicles DVD
$9.69 Beginning with a documentary style that immediately hooks the viewer, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, based on the Harry Bates short story "Farewell to the Master," becomes as much a human interest story as it does a sci-fi B-movie classic. The film soberly depicts the arrival of an alien dignitary, Klaatu (Michael Rennie), who has come to earth with his deadly robot, Gort (Lock Martin), to deliver the message that earthlings must stop warring among themselves--or else. After being shot at by ignorant, panicky military guards, Klaatu is brought to a Washington, D.C., hospital, where he begs a sympathetic but frank Major White (Robert Osterloh) to gather all the world's leaders so he can tell them more specifically what he has come 250 million miles to warn them about. Losing patience, Klaatu slips into the human world, adapting a false identity and living at a boarding house where he meets a smart woman with a conscience, Helen Benson (Patricia Neal), and her inquisitive son, Bobby (Billy Gray). Both mother and son soon find themselves embroiled in the complex mystery ...
