| | Eartha Kitt That Bad Eartha/Down To Eartha CD (2002)
Tus Problemas Crecen
$12.15 Recorded between 1953 & 1955. Originally released on RCA (1183) & RCA (1109).
Collectables Records combines Eartha Kitt's second and third LPs on this discount-priced CD reissue, giving a good sense of her early style, which, come to think of it, is the style she continued to maintain throughout her career. Born in South Carolina and raised in Harlem, Kitt acquired her sexy, self-mocking, continental sophistication via her travels around the world, particularly a stay in Paris. By the time she burst upon New York, first with a series of nightclub appearances, then in the revue New Faces of 1952, and finally on her RCA Victor recordings, she came across as a rich, jaded chanteuse. At the same time, however, she let her audiences know that it was all something of a joke, which, of course, made it all the more appealing. On 1953's "That Bad Eartha" (the quotation marks were deliberate), RCA reprised some of her hit singles, notably "C'est Si Bon (It's So Good)," and gave her some similar material, particularly a couple of naughty Cole Porter songs, "Let's Do It" and "My Heart Belongs to Daddy." She sang in French, Spanish, Turkish, and even Swahili, but all along she was speaking the language of the supper club, singing with precise articulation in her limited, reedy, vibrato-laden voice. On Down to Eartha, a 1955 collection of later singles and tracks, you can hear RCA looking for hits with some up-tempo novelty material, but there are also more songs for the nightclub act, stories Kitt acts out, such as "The Heel" and "Oh John! (Please Don't Kill Me)." Kitt's sly theatricality wins out over the sometimes pedestrian songwriting, making the collection as a whole a powerful demonstration of her talents. ~ William Ruhlmann

| | Flaw Through The Eyes CD (2001) (Import) Bonus Tracks; Hong Kong
Tus Problemas Crecen
$18.39 Hong Kong import contains the bonus cuts "Away" and "No Time."
Flaw's debut album is a compilation of tracks previously independently released, and reflects the band's progress from its Louisville KY beginnings. It's a tribute to the singularity of the band's vision that the joins aren't immediately apparent. Flaw's songs veer wildly from full-thrust hard rock to reflective acoustic textures, with the sincere, youthful vocals of founder member Chris Volz as the glue that holds them together.
"One More Time" is a good example of the band's gentler, ...
| | Best Of Deicide CD (2003)
Tus Problemas Crecen
$10.75 Recorded between 1990 & 2000. Includes liner notes by Joey Jordison.
For all of their important contributions to the advance of pure American death metal, Florida's Deicide will probably be remembered in the end for the exaggerated publicity stunts of outspoken frontman Glen Benton -- possibly the only man to take his anti-crusade against Catholicism seriously enough to brand an inverted cross onto his forehead, only to almost get blown up by animal rights activists. Who would have thought those bunny lovers were the true enemy? But hey, any publicity is good publicity, right? And if nothing else, Benton was probably the only American death metal musician to challenge those wacky, church-burning Norwegians for extracurricular activities inadvertently leading to a lot of headlines -- and for the sheer entertainment value involved, fans can thank him. Anyway, since Deicide's surprisingly long career challenged but never quite matched the likes of Sepultura, Death, and Morbid Angel in death metal's lofty, upper echelons of brilliance and glory, Roadrunner's nearly career-spanning The Best of Deicide offers many metal fans a perfect chance to sample the crème de la crème of the band's material in one fell swoop (of the axe). Listening to these 20 tracks spanning a decade and five albums (their final Roadrunner album 2001's In Torment, in Hell, 1998's live When Satan Lives, and 1993's Amon: Feasting the Beast demos collection are represented), one certainly has to give Deicide credit for such unwavering commitment to their vile and misanthropic cause. Conversely, as track after bludgeoning track storms by decapitating innocents left and right, one can't help but notice the dearth of ideas resulting from the group's infinitesimal evolutionary pace. In fact, about the only serious variety in terms of recorded sound takes place via the downright crappy production gracing the scant submissions from 1997's arguable career-low Serpents of the Light. As such, later offerings like "Bastard of Christ," "This Is Hell We're In," and even the mildly melodic (gasp!) "Bible Basher" are reliably brutal, consistently speedy, and remarkably ...
| | Chris Caffery Music Man CD (2004) (Import) Digipak; Extended Play; United Kingdom
Tus Problemas Crecen
$9.65 You'd be hard-pressed to find a musician more productive in 2004 than multi-talented, longtime Savatage and Trans-Siberian Orchestra collaborator Chris Caffery, who cranked out a double-disk solo album and still had enough music left over to fill this eight-track mini-album. And far from a lackluster ...
