Instead of playing the punk Balkan card again, this time around Kultur Shock turn more toward metal, and do it with the perfect producer -- Jack Endino. He brings out not only their musicality, but also the crunch of guitars and the wail of vocals, especially on "Tutti Frutti" and the almost circus-like "Horse Thief," a song that goes through many moods, including a quieter interlude with stunning fiddle. That they've improved as a band is quite apparent. Everything has gelled, and the sense of risk-taking is palpable and exciting. They've also expanded their colors, venturing into the Middle East for "Hashishi," for example, and doing it very effectively. There's plenty of melody in with the metal, apparent in the themes from "Kamarage" and "Mustafa," which are quite lyrical. They're a band of quirks and forays off the normal, even the Balkan normal, and they've learned how to put the elements together most effectively, while still keeping the power of metal under it all. A record for both metalheads and world music fans. ~ Chris Nickson

Kultura-Diktatura songs
$11.65 The 2000 album from the Irish boy band sensations conquered Europe with this former No.1 LP. The first single 'My Love' helped Westlife tie a record with the Beatles for having 7 consecutive #1 hits in a row (in the UK)! This re-released version adds 3 tracks more than the original: 'Uptown Girl' (from a Comic Relief benefit single), 'I Have A Dream' and 'My Girl'.
This reissue of the hit album from Irish boy group Westlife features 3 additional tracks: "Uptown Girl," "I Have A Dream," and "My Girl."
Westlife's debut album was like an appetizer at Jean-Georgs, compared to the fast-food boy band music shoveled out on 99-cent menus. Their sophomore album, Coast to Coast, brings about that feeling of being overstuffed by a fancy main course and being offered dessert. At that point the quality of food doesn't matter as much; you're ready for the check. Even the Mariah Carey duet sounds rehashed -- is the best she would offer them a remake of her own remake of Phil Collins' "Against All Odds"? As was the case on their first album, the production quality is spectacular, so crystal clear that it makes the immaculate production of pop albums from just the last few years sound murky. The vocal talent here is powerful too -- bet your life savings that when the group fades into oblivion at least one of them will be jolted to higher fame. It is a familiar sight -- the trend that began with Take That, then shifted to Boyzone, then grasped by Westlife (who were mentored by Boyzone's Ronan Keating). It is as if the same group just keeps being reincarnated, but their age stays the same -- perhaps this is the United Kingdom's version of Menudo. While the money-minders of the record labels may not have a vision that extends ...
| | Lulu To Sir With Love: The Best Of 1967-68 CD (2003)
Kultura-Diktatura album
$14.79 Recorded between 1967 & 1968. Includes liner notes by Colin Escott.
This compilation collects 19 sides from Lulu during her burgeoning ascent as a British pop diva. The tracks include the contents of the long-players To Sir With Love (1967) and Love Loves to Love Lulu (1967) -- which share pretty much the same 11-song tune stack. The remainder were issued on a variety of singles in the U.K. as well as stateside. Although the vast majority failed to make much of an impact, she did top the pop singles chart with the title song of this package as well as from the film To Sir With Love (1967), where she likewise debuted as an actress. She played the smarmy lower-middle-class student "Miss" Barbara Pegg alongside Sidney Poitier's brilliant portrayal of high-school educator "Sir" Mark Thackeray. Her only other platter to hit the Top 40 in the U.S. was "Best of Both Worlds" -- which features an opulent score from Peter Knight. Keen-eared listeners may well hear several striking similarities between the introductory orchestration, which is a variation on a theme that Knight was concurrently incorporating into his work with the Moody Blues on their groundbreaking Days of Future Passed (1967). Specifically, musical quotes that surround the recitation (read: "Breath deep/The gather gloom...") at the end of "Nights in White Satin" are used here for a similar sonic flare. Lulu remained at the center of the mod scene in the U.K., rivaling other top British vocalists such as Dusty Springfield and Cilla Black for airplay and record sales, under the direction of Mickie Most (producer/arranger) and his crew -- which often included the distinct work of John Paul Jones (string arrangement/bass/guitar/brass) several years prior to his commitment to Led Zeppelin. In addition to co-arranging with Knight, Jones' multi-instrumental prowess can be heard on practically every track. His contributions include the Burt Bacharach/Hal ...
