Whereas most great live rock albums are about energy, At Fillmore East is like a great live jazz session, where the pleasure comes from the musicians' interaction and playing. The great thing about that is, the original album that brought the Allmans so much acclaim is as notable for its clever studio editing as it is for its performances. Producer Tom Dowd skillfully trimmed some of the performances down to relatively concise running time (edits later restored on the double-disc set The Fillmore Concerts), at times condensing several performances into one track. Far from being a sacrilege, this tactic helps present the Allmans in their best light, since even if the music isn't necessarily concise (three tracks run over ten minutes, with two in the 20-minute range), it does showcase the group's terrific instrumental interplay, letting each member (but particularly guitarist Duane and keyboardist/vocalist Gregg) shine. Even after the release of the unedited concerts, this original double album (single CD) remains the pinnacle of the Allmans and Southern rock at its most elastic, bluesy, and jazzy. [In 2004, Mercury reissued At Fillmore East as a hybrid SACD, playable in both regular CD players and Super Audio CD players. On each of the layers, the remastered sound is spectacular, a considerable upgrade from the initial CD pressings.] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine The original Fillmore East album is one of the finest live documents of the rock era, capturing the original line-up of one of the '70s' tightest outfits before they were cruelly robbed of Duane Allman and Berry Oakley. Taken from five 1971 performances at New York's fabled Fillmore East, the extended and effortlessly melodic workouts of "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed" and "Whipping Post" still have the power to rivet and move. On display here is the Allmans' fabled chemistry at its finest. The band not only rocks, it rolls, swings, and stretches out in exploratory, jazzy passages. The dual guitar interplay of Duane Allman and Dickey Betts glides effortlessly over the propulsive rhythm section of Oakley and twin drummers Jaimoe and Butch Trucks, while Greg Allman's powerful blues voice and melodic keyboard work provides the icing on the cake. Though the later-released THE FILLMORE CONCERTS presents these songs in their original entirety, AT FILLMORE EAST, with its seamless edits of multiple performances, may be the superior recording. It highlights all the glint and sparkle of what still ranks among the best jamming committed to record. Allman Brothers Band Live At Fillmore East Songs Live At Fillmore East Music Live At Fillmore East Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Awesome multi-channel SA-CD version SA-CD version is incredible. The piano sounds like it's in my listening room. Amazing sounds from the slide guitar. You can hear the bass line cause the drummers cymbal's to shimmer from reverberation. This SA-CD could well be a demonstration reference disk.
This music has existed since 1971, but, I'm betting that this is the first time it has been faithfully reproduced enough that listeners can hear what the lucky attendees at this historic concert heard for themselves.
A must have disk for multi-channel music lovers and certainly a must have for Allman Brothers fans. Submitted by Mike (New Berlin, WI, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
SACD 5.1 Multichannel-Superb Live at the Filmore is an exceptional recording as is. But to listen to it in 5.1 surround sound, adds a totally whole new dimension to it. There's no better way to listen to a true classic. Submitted by Jimmy (Mesa, Arizona) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
SACD=Best sound yet Surround SACD sound is superb. To say it blows away the DTS version is an understatement. Submitted by Steve (Toronto, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 3 found this helpful.
They Finally Got The Mix Right This Time ! Yes the dates were Friday and Saturday night; March 12th & 13th. Each night had 1 hour opening sets and then were followed by "longer" late sets. This allowed the band to jam and explore more, which they did and as the intensity levels increased, it was from these late shows that most of the cuts came from. Back in 1992 Polydor, who had temporary ownership of Capricorn Records - who would eventually go backrupt, issued a "soft mixed" version of an entire "Fillmore" concert, song by song, audience fade into next song etc. It is a great listen because it flows so well and actually follows how the ABB did a concert, BUT what a mess with the mix... Berry's bass sounds like a rubber band and the guitars (at times) are mixed so far in the back, that you 'almost' lose 'em... but you don't. You get the full length version of "Stormy Monday" which originally appeared in 1974 on the Quadraphonic version of the LP. Who knows why they mushed that CD, but this mix SMOKES!!! That is the true story about the release of "Fillmore Deluxe Edition". It's a bit disjointed, as the songs aren't segued like the "Concerts" " set but the guitars and the bass, here, are in your face! Kudo's to whoever got the mix right this time, finally almost 35 years later. Submitted by jeffsauer1957 (Sioux Falls, SD, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 2 found this helpful.
