Based on his resume, one would assume that former Replacements bassist and second-generation Guns N' Roses member Tommy Stinson knows how to rock. Ironically, 2004's VILLAGE GORILLA HEAD, though undeniably a rock album, owes much more to the singer/songwriter outings of former bandmate Paul Westerberg than it does to the reckless swagger of early Replacements or certain LA hard-rock outfits. The smoky, acoustic "Without a View," the melancholic strummer "OK," and the drum machine-filled title track all show Stinson growing up and trying on different kinds of stylistic shoes.
Those seeking Stinson's pedigree need not fear, however. "Something's Wrong" has requisite rock raunch, and "Couldn't Wait" approximates TIM-era Replacements in its combination of hooks and amped-up energy. Still, the second half of the disc is given to introspective, low-key acoustic songs that bear the influence of Westerberg. Stinson seems comfortable in this mode (except when he breaks out of it to heat things up again with "Motivation"). VILLAGE GORILLA HEAD may disappoint those trying to revisit Stinson's glory days, but for open-eared listeners with a mind to both rock and reflect, this solo outing is sure to intrigue and impress.

Tommy Stinson Village Gorilla Head Songs Village Gorilla Head Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Big surprise This CD sometimes sounds like Stones or Bob Dylan. It's a really great CD, different from everything Tommy did during his carrer in Replacements or Guns N' Roses. It shows how talented he is. Village Gorrila Head got great rockers and also two amazing ballads: Light Of Day and Hey You. Submitted by marcustelles (Petrópolis, Brasil) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great Album This is a fantastic album once again showcasing what a great talent Tommy truly is. Tommy is carrying on the legacy of The Replacements admirably.
Anyone who hears this CD should also check out his efforts with Perfect and Bash & Pop to hear what a great songwriter Tommy has become.
It's just a shame that he is wasting so much time playing with a has-been loser act like G 'n' R! He is a great solo performer that people should pay attention to. Submitted by Tuttle (Astoria, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Village Gorilla Head album
$8.99 After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. The album opens with the saunter of the aptly titled "Walk On," followed by the utterly gorgeous, Wurlitzer-tinged "See the Sky about to Rain."
The set also features ...

Released in 1981, REACTOR was a transitional album for Neil Young, most notably in that it marked a break in his longstanding relationship with Reprise Records. But before Young left for the supposedly greener fields of Geffen, he unleashed this amped-up outing with Crazy Horse in tow. "Opera Star," with its refrain of "ho-ho-ho-ho-ho-ho" and unusual synthesizer backing, sets a quirky tone that's furthered by "T-Bone," a nine-minute guitar workout with lyrics comprised only of the lines "Got mashed potatoes/Ain't got no T-bone." ...
| | Grandpaboy Dead Man Shake CD (2003)
Village Gorilla Head music CDs
$11.39 So, like all of Paul Westerberg's loyal fans, you've been dreaming of the day that the great cranky genius of slop-rock would record a blues album, right? OK, probably not, but Westerberg went and did it anyway (under the guise of his alter ego, Grandpaboy), and Dead Man Shake turns out to be a better album than you might expect under the circumstances. Like the previous Grandpaboy long-player, Mono, Dead Man Shake was recorded in Westerberg's basement studio, with "Winthrope Marion Purcival V" once again handling all the instruments, and though one can't help but wish the guy would find a decent drummer, the shabby but emphatic sound of these tracks at once honors the blues-leaning material on deck and suits Westerberg's musical instincts quite well. ...

2001 gave Neil Diamond fans plenty to cheer about. A new album of all-original studio material (THREE CHORD OPERA), a speaking and singing cameo in the bawdy film SAVING SILVERMAN, and the hit-packed anthology THE ESSENTIAL NEIL DIAMOND. This two-disc set chronologically traces the Brooklyn native's career path over the span of four decades. Packed with mono versions of classic '60s hits, Disc One alone would be a considerable canon for the average musician, thanks to songs like "Solitary Man," "Cracklin' Rosie," "Song Sung Blue," "Kentucky Woman," "Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon," "Sweet Caroline," and "I'm A Believer." For Diamond, this was just a start, as he leapt to MOR god-like status via his duet with fellow Erasmus High alumnus Barbra Streisand ("You Don't Bring Me Flowers") and other sentimental sides including "Heartlight," "Love On The Rocks," "September Morn," and the patriotic anthem "America".
A number of in-concert cuts quickly dispel any doubts that Diamond's skills are equally as impressive on stage as they are in the studio. One listen to live favorites like "He Aint' Heavy He's My Brother," "Shilo," and "Brooklyn Roads" cinches Diamond's legacy as an American musical treasure.
This 2005 set repackages 2001's excellent 2-CD set, THE ESSENTIAL NEIL DIAMOND, and includes a bonus, hour-long ...
