| | Association Greatest Hits CD Association Discography of CDs
Quite possibly the finest harmony group of the '60s and one of the best light pop bands ever, Los Angeles' The Association had an unbeatable string of hits in the mid-60s. All of those hits are included here. From the mildly controversial and psych-tinged "Along Comes Mary" and "Windy"--both of which contain not-terribly-subtle drug references--to the innocuous but heartbreakingly beautiful ballads "Never My Love" and "Cherish," The Association's stock in trade was their precise four- and five-part harmony. Most often, these beautiful multi-part vocals are topped by Terry Kirkland's expressive leads. Although their years spent recording for Valiant and Warner Brothers Records produced many more gems than are included here, The Association's GREATEST HITS is a perfect starting point for this wonderful band.
The Association: Terry Kirkman (vocals); Russ Giguere, Jim Yester (vocals, guitar); Ted Bluechel (guitar, drums); Gary Alexander (guitar); Brian Cole (bass).
Producers: Bones Howe, The Association, Curt Boettcher, Jerry Yester.

Greatest Hits songs
$11.99 This compilation is just what it says: number one hits on the American charts from the 1960s. It has a leg up on some similar anthologies, though, by virtue of its sheer quantity: 26 songs spanning the entire decade, which is pretty good value for a single CD. While it's true the selection is a little arbitrary, on the whole it's really good, and whether you care about chart statistics or not, it's an excellent disc if you're looking for an all-purpose collection of 1960s pop/rock classics. There are many core classics here, spanning rock, soul, pop, and the British Invasion: the Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations," Del Shannon's "Runaway," the Marvelettes' "Please ...

Greatest Hits album
$16.95 Hollywood maverick Gary "Alley-Oop" Paxton tried his hand at all sorts of genres back in the early-mid 1960s. His girl group recordings rank with some of his best, thanks to his tremendous stable of writers. The music on this 26 track CD was made from 19
In the early and mid-'60s, Hollywood producer Gary Paxton was trying his hand at just about every style of popular music going in a quest to land hits, even though he rarely found many commercial returns for his efforts. Boy Trouble: Garpax Girls collects 26 girl group-oriented tracks from his vaults, some of which found release on various small labels, though over half of them were previously unissued. None of these artists found much success, either with Paxton or elsewhere (if they were even recorded elsewhere). And, to be honest, it's easy enough to tell why none of these recordings made it big: they're not on the same level as the most memorable girl group smashes, in terms of either the vocals or the material, and are often derivative of girl group-styled records being made by other artists, songwriters, and producers. That doesn't mean, however, that there isn't some enjoyable and imaginative stuff here, albeit of the kind that will appeal to specialists rather than collectors who want to focus on top-rank girl group music.
