Although it practically defined "grunge" in the early 1990s with albums by Nirvana, Mudhoney, and Soundgarden, Sub Pop Records hit a slump at the end of the decade. However, around 2003, the label was reinvigorated by the success of the Shins, the Postal Service, and Iron & Wine, newer artists that placed melody over pure volume. The San Francisco quartet Rogue Wave was one of the first bands signed to Sub Pop after this renaissance, and its easy to see why--the group plays 1960s-inspired pop that veers into both folk and rock territory.
Rogue Wave's debut, OUT OF THE SHADOW, opens with the chiming guitars and prominent vocal harmonies of "Every Moment." The quartet ventures down a sunny, acoustic guitar-paved path with "Be Kind - Remind," but what truly distinguishes the song, and many other tracks on the album, is the subtle yet distinctive use of electronics. Throughout the record, these literal bells and whistles serve to enhance the tunes rather than distract from them. Equally apt to rock out or settle into a mellow groove, Rogue Wave is sure to impress indie-pop fans that like their music smart and quirky.

Unearth consistently dance back and forth between the borders of hardcore and metal, blurring the lines to create one of the purest forms of metalcore available. Released in 2006, III: In the Eyes of Fire saw Unearth score their commercial breakthrough (as it reached number 45 on the album charts). But they accomplished this feat without the input of longtime producer Adam Dutkiewicz (yep, the same chap who is an integral member of Killswitch Engage), as renowned producer Terry Date manned the boards. But on their follow-up (and fourth studio album overall), 2008's The March, the lads have reunited once more with Señor Dutkiewicz, and the results are as hard-hitting and gloriously metallic as ever before. While many focus on the hardcore hollering (and thinking man's lyrics) of the group's frontman, Trevor Phipps, perhaps more than any of their previous albums, The March proves once and for all that Unearth are one mighty guitar band. The twin six-string team of Buz McGrath and Ken Susi is one of metal's finest, and it doesn't take long to prove this -- just check out the kickoff track, "My Will Be Done," which features some pretty darn tasty guitar work.
