Riding the garage rock wave that sprung up in the early 21st century, New Zealand's Datsuns lay down more hard rocking tunes on their second album OUTTA SIGHT/OUTTA MIND.

When the Datsuns released their first album in 2002, it was in the wake of the garage punk explosion kick started by the White Stripes and the Strokes, so this New Zealand quartet was lumped in as fellow travelers -- an understandable miscatogrization, but one that doesn't quite describe what the band is. There's barely a trace of garage or punk in the Datsuns. They're a '70s heavy rock band to the core. That was unusual when The Datsuns hit the streets in 2002, which garnered attention since it was, for want of a better term, a novelty, but within a year, there was a flood of bands that partied like it was 1973, even if nearly all of them were born closer to 1983. Many of them turned out to be better than the Datsuns, too, particularly the AC/DC-worshipping Jet and the cheerfully ridiculous Darkness, who trumped the New Zealand quartet in two significant ways -- they could write songs and riffs. That's may be a little unfair, since there are moments on The Datsuns where the band makes some pretty invigorating rock & roll, but two years later on their second album, Outta Sight/Outta Mind, they are a spent force. They're still stuck in the past, but where they could occasionally recall Deep Purple on their debut, they sound as turgid as Cactus throughout Outta Sight/Outta Mind. Former Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones does his best as a producer, giving the album a clean yet heavy sound, but the problem lies with the quartet, who flail about on 12 songs as they ape classic heavy rock without replicating it. Much of the problem is that the group is far too busy, relying on skittering single-note riffs when big power chords would not only hit harder, they'd be more memorable, instead of jumping around too often to create an impression. Lead singer Dolf De Datsun does make an impression with his thin, high-strung caterwauls, but he lacks flair. He, like his lead guitarist, Phil Datsun, is a faceless journeyman, and now that there are more hard rock bands -- both ironic and not so much so -- on the market in 2004, the Datsuns no longer seem like a fresh novelty. They seem like a garden-variety hard rock band, one that would have been generic and forgettable in 1974, and one that is generic and forgettable in 2004. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

New Zealand's heaviest retro-rockers, The Datsuns, return with their sophomore album 'Outta Sight/Outta Mind' (no doubt a reference to their almost press-less absence since 2002's debut), with bigger & better riffs & production from the legendary John Paul Jones. The Led Zeppelin bassist has been with the band at Jacobs Studios in Surrey & has inspired them to produce probably the finest heavy rock album of 2004. 12 tracks. V2.

Outta Sight/Outta Mind

BY A THREAD is Gov't Mule's first studio album since HIGH & MIGHTY was issued in 2006. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. Carlsson and drummer Matt Abst are a solid match, since Abst is a drummer used to shifting time signatures and allowing the unexpected in while still driving a band. The band's keyboardist and rhythm guitarist, Danny Louis, is a shape-shifter, playing to whatever is needed in a given track. His manner of coloring sounds inside and around a particular tune's framework is a large part of what makes Gov't Mule's sound so fresh here - despite the fact that they don't stray far from what they do best. Warren Haynes and his guitar are, as usual, front and center, his guitar screaming, his big throaty growl hammering down lyrics like a Southern fire-and-brimstone preacher with earthshaking soul. The material on this set is tight; there is less jamming but Gordie Johnson's production and mixing equalize everything at ten, making it feel like the disc is recorded live. The set opens with the pulsing bass throb of "Broke ...

This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players. Along with Styx and REO Speedwagon, Journey ruled the charts and radio airwaves in the early '80s. And like the aforementioned bands, Journey began in the '70s, so obviously the compilers of its 1988 GREATEST HITS release had a lot of material to choose from. Journey's sound was a merger of hard rock, compliments of guitarist Neal Schon, and the melodic pop/ballads of singer Steve Perry. This resulted in such classic rock radio staples as "Any Way You Want It," "Separate Ways," "Open Arms," "Don't Stop Believin'," "Wheel in the Sky," and "Who's Crying Now," all included here. Greatest Hits is an excellent, thorough 14-track collection containing all of Journey's big hits, from 1978's "Wheel in the Sky" to 1986's "I'll Be Alright Without You." Although the songs aren't presented in chronological order and a handful of minor hits ("Suzanne," "Walks Like a Lady") aren't included, it doesn't matter, since every essential Journey single -- "Only the Young," "Don't Stop Believin'," "Any Way You Want It," "Separate Ways," "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'," "Open Arms," "Send Her My ...

Decoration Don't Disappoint Us Now CD  (2008)

Outta Sight/Outta Mind
CD $10.65
Decoration came together when long-time friends Stuart Murray (vocals), Steve Taylor (drums) and Steven Dickinson (guitar) from Bolton hooked up with Sam Noble (bass), they utilised their collective gambling skills, and in particular the winnings from a high odds bet on Cyfor Malta in the Thomas Pink Stakes to fund their initial demos, named in homage to the race that got them into the studio The Thomas Pink Sessions were the bands first, self released offerings. These were immediately picked up by John Peel and the blue touch paper was lit.Rambling casually onto the scene via a late night phone call and subsequent session for John Peel, they became the highest ever placed unsigned band in the great mans festive fifty chart. Radio play and sessions from Steve Lamacq, Huw Stephens, Gideon Coe and Jane Gazzo followed along with sessions for independent stations across the country. This recording, their debut album, was originally released in the UK and Europe in October, 2005 as Don’t Disappoint Me Now, the U.S. version is re-titled as Don’t Disappoint Us Now and has extra tracks lifted from a session for the Peel inspired Dandelion Radio and two early demo versions of album tracks. The record is presented with brand new artwork by long time band collaborator and artist Chin.Decoration have since recorded and released a second album, Flippant, and currently have their third eagerly anticipated album entitled See You After the War recorded and awaiting release later this year. What they’re saying about Decoration:“Decoration ...
