This live date, recorded and released in 1964, features the Stan Getz Quartet and the smooth, ever-charming vocals of Astrud Gilberto. Bossa nova dominates the set list, especially on the Astrud-fronted tracks "Corcovado (Quiet Night of Quiet Stars)" and "It Might As Well Be Spring."
Getz was no stranger to progressive tendencies, but GETZ AU GO-GO lays back in the cut, favoring the cool-toned bossa nova and mid-tempo grooves of his iconic, trendsetting disc GETZ/GILBERTO. This is never a drawback, especially considering Astrud's breezy, beautiful performances and the sweet chemistry of his group, which features the great Gary Burton on vibes. As well suited to providing classy background sounds as it is to concentrated listening, GETZ AU GO-GO is a thoroughly enjoyable cool-jazz classic.

A fine singer from the swing era who was always underrated, Mary Ann McCall deserved much more fame than she received. After an unrecorded stint with Tommy Dorsey in late 1938, she made her recording debut with Woody Herman ("Big Wig in the Wigwam") and gained some attention for her work with Charlie Barnet during 1939-1940. Following a period off the scene, she joined Woody Herman's Herd in 1946, staying with the band until its breakup. She recorded four numbers as a leader in 1947 and then was a member of Herman's Second Herd during 1948-1949. Her solo career, which included a couple numbers recorded with Artie Shaw's Gramercy Five, never caught on the way one might have expected, though she returned to the jazz scene on an occasional basis into the 1980s. You're Mine, You has the best of her recordings of 1939-1950, including numbers with the Barnet and Herman orchestras; her early solo session; the Shaw titles; and a 1950 date that includes trumpeter Red Rodney, tenor saxophonist Al Cohn, and baritonist Gerry Mulligan. Among the more memorable performances on this long overdue and definitive collection are "Romance in the Dark," "Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams," "Trouble Is a Man," "Detour Ahead," "You're My Thrill" (one of McCall's best-known recordings), "Sunday," and "I Cried for You." ~ Scott Yanow

Here are four quick reasons why Jim Boggia deserves to be on your musical radar screen: 1) He\'s got a great voice - raspy and expressive and well-suited for a number of styles, similar to Mike Viola\'s that way, 2) He\'s got a firm grasp of pop vernacular - Boggia obviously has spent a lifetime listening to lots of music and absorbing plenty of it - there are subtle reference points in the music, as well as in the liner notes, 3) He\'s smart - I know, not usually a pop requisite, but always a nice bonus - Boggia often goes outside himself to explore larger issues in his lyrics and displays an admirable vocabulary while doing so, 4) He\'s good - these are songs that grow on you the more you listen, true singer/songwriter quality pop product - sure it\'s not perfect, but Boggia displays a lot of growth and maturity in this latest collection, entitled Safe In Sound.Through Michael Penn and Aimee Mann, Boggia made acquaintance with Julian Coryell and Joe Zook, who produced this new album. While Boggia adeptly handles guitar and a number of other instruments here, he also surrounds himself with several impressive musicians, including Julian Coryell on a variety of instruments, Butch (from Eels) on drums, Mike Frank on various and sundry keyboards, and Justin Meldal-Johnson (Beck) on bass.The CD kicks off with \"Shine,\" a song co-written with Aimee Mann that serves as balladic ode and lament to those of us stuck in the compromised prison that is the workweek: \"Drive / Watch the streets become alive / filled with all the souls who, just like you, are heading to their job / The part of every day that\'s robbed / Filled with all the things we have to do.\" The song offers optimism, proclaiming that \"like the day, you\'re going to shine.\"Boggia is an optimist, something very much in evidence in his more upbeat \"Live the Proof\" (co-written with producer Julian Coryell). ...
