Horror aficionados will be hooked on this long-awaited special edition packed with special features. A series of gruesome murders in the Cabrini Green housing project leads graduate student Helen Lyle to believe that the urban legend of the Candy man may just be true. Stars Virginia Madsen, Tony Todd. Helen Lyle is writing a thesis on Candyman, a supposedly mythical killer who attacks his victims with a hooked hand when they say his name in front of a mirror. During her research, she meets up with the killer, who wants her to join him in his "mythic" world; when she refuses, he murders those in her wake, leaving her to be charged with the crimes. She tries to explain who the real culprit is, but her efforts fail, and authorities commit her to a mental hospital. Desperate to prove her sanity, she summons Candyman, who comes and helps her escape. But he has more murderous impulses to quell, and still wants her to join him in his parallel life. Folklorics graduate student Helen Lyle's (Virginia Madsen) thesis research leads her into the urban underworld of Chicago's Cabrini-Green housing projects, whose residents are genuinely terrified of "Candyman" (Tony Todd), a legendary figure with a hook for a hand. Skeptical, she "summons" him in front of a mirror and discovers with horror that he's real and wants her to join him in his "mythic" world; when she refuses, he murders those in her wake, leaving her to be charged with the crimes. She tries to explain who the real culprit is, but her efforts fail, and authorities commit her to a mental hospital. This taut horror thriller is based on "The Forbidden," by Clive Barker, who also executive-produced. Shot in DeLuxe color.
Although the film credits say the film is based on a story by Clive Barker, it is also loosely derived from an actual series of murders that took place in a Chicago housing project. Finding that in a certain building two apartments' bathroom mirrors backed up on each other with nothing in between, a killer was able to rip through the vanity to get from one apartment to another. Candyman Reviews: "...The imagination of Clive Barker is authentically strange....[Madsen is] enterprising..."-- Janet Maslin, New York Times "...The Candyman cometh, and terror fans rejoice. Finally, a modern-day bogeyman who pierces the psyche..."

Candyman review
$9.85 IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS is John Carpenter's foray into the world of H.P. Lovecraft and surreal horror. An insurance investigator (Sam Neill) is sent to find a missing author, Sutter Cane (Jurgen Prochnow). As he comes closer to finding the author, things start to change around him, and soon nothing is what it seems. Madness seems to be the normal state of things, while reason and sanity have no place in this new world created by the mind of Sutter Cane. Carpenter plays with changing perspective, making the audience aware thay they too are part of the story, and maybe, just maybe, this is not just make believe. The story is very ambitious in its attempt to put a whammy on the viewer's imagination, but the direction is steady and thoughtful enough to pull it off. Sam Neill is superb in the lead role of the only sane man left on Earth, incredulous to the destruction of reality as he knows it. It is his controlled performance that makes the bizarre events in the film threatening and scary. Jurgen Prochnow is deeply creepy as author and madman Sutter Cane, who's imagination is so vivid it is spilling out of his head into the real world. John Carpenter is known for his scary movies, and he does not fail to deliver with IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS.
This 95 minute feature film is a DVD starring Sam Neill and Charlton Heston.

Candyman film
$5.95 This collection of five cheesy and proudly exploitative sub-B movies brings together some of the best yet least known low-budget serial-killer flicks of the 1960s, '70s and '80s. James Landis's THE SADIST (1963) features Arch Hall, Jr., as a psychopath with a murderous hatred of schoolteachers; THE KILLING HAND (1973) stars John Savage as a rapist tormented by his past, with an increasingly insane need for revenge and bloodshed. HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY (1981) comes from Italian master of splatter Lucio Fulci and tells of an old mansion that comes with an ancient, monstrous serial killer in the basement. The cellar isn't a nice place in DON'T LOOK IN THE BASEMENT (1973), either, as sick and bloodthirsty inmates take over their creepy mental institute. Finally, the terrifying SILENT NIGHT, BLOODY NIGHT (1973) features an escaped psychopath terrorizing the residents of a small community and lurking in, yes, a large old house on the edge of town. Taken together, these sick, bloody, and frightening movies make up an exciting and rare collection--but one that should not be watched alone, in an old mansion, or anywhere near a basement.

| | Sawdust And Tinsel DVD (1953) Full Frame
Candyman video
$28.65 Ingmar Bergman's SAWDUST AND TINSEL bears a resemblance to his later, better-known features in its harsh treatment of human relationships. Jealousy, lovers taking turns humiliating one other, selfish sexual desire--all these are familiar themes that would be developed further by Bergman later on, but the film's final moments seem to hold a rare promise of reconciliation. Albert Johansson (Åke Grönberg) is a sad, pathetic man who has given up domestic tranquillity for an uncertain life on the road as the director of the traveling Circus Alberti. Since leaving his wife and children, he has taken up with young bareback rider Anne (Harriet Andersson, who often played sexy, earthy characters in Bergman movies of the period). In Albert's old hometown the couple approaches the haughty director of a local theater company (Gunnar Björnstrand) to borrow props and costumes for the night's performance. Anne falls for the dandylike ham actor Frans (Hasse Ekman), who subsequently insults Albert in public, and a physical confrontation between the two men ensues. The film is formally captivating throughout and contains a celebrated, somewhat surreal flashback sequence early on, reminiscent of German Expressionist cinema, in which a white-faced clown (played by Anders Ek) suffers a breakdown after being confronted with his wife's infidelity.
Ingmar Bergman presents the battle of the sexes as a ramshackle, grotesque carnival in this, one of the late master's most vivid early works. The story of the twisted relationship between a turn-of-the-century traveling circus owner (Ake Grnberg) and his performer girlfriend (Harriet Andersson), Sawdust and Tinsel features dreamlike detours and twisted psychosexual power play that presage the director's Smiles of a Summer Night and The Seventh Seal, works that would soon change the landscape of art cinema forever.
