| | Super Hits 1971 CD
King Records' Super Hits 1971 collects ten of that year's biggest pop and soul hits, including the Coasters' "Love Potion No. 9," Rufus Thomas' "Breakdown" and the Grass Roots' "Temptation Eyes." Unfortunately, all of these songs appear in re-recorded stereo versions, and even though these re-recordings aren't as cheap and tinny-sounding as they are on some collections, they're still inferior enough to make this collection difficult to recommend (especially considering the album's relatively short length). ~ Heather Phares

Super Hits 1971 album
$10.69 Donnie Elbert's initial run as a solo artist happened in the late '50s with a series of singles recorded for the King subsidiary Deluxe. All of those sides are collected here, including his one chart hit, the soul-squeezing falsetto masterpiece "What Can I Do." Elbert spent the next decade as a soul gypsy traveling from small label to even smaller label for a single or two before moving on to the next (don't worry, he eventually found a home in the '70s with All Platinum). Added to the Deluxe label catalog here are several sides recorded for the Gateway label in 1964, including a nice ballad, "Who's It Gonna Be," and three pleasingly danceable Motown sound-alikes, "Lily Lou," "Do Whatcha Wanna," and "Run Little Girl." There's also an outtake version of ...
| | Alan Jackson Let It Be Christmas CD (2002)
Super Hits 1971 CD music
$9.89 Unlike HONKY TONK CHRISTMAS, Alan Jackson's fine 1993 holiday album, LET IT BE CHRISTMAS sticks exclusively to the chestnuts. Though Jackson has built a career as one of country music's premier good 'ol boy neo-honky tonkers, here he employs heavily orchestrated arrangements more characteristic of Sinatra than Skynyrd. The setting reveals him to be a highly adaptable and technically superior vocalist, and ...

| | Queensryche Greatest Hits CD (2000)
Super Hits 1971 songs
$10.49 Digitally remastered by Evren Goknar (2000, Capitol Studios).
While popular music trends cycle endlessly, Queensryche has remained a vital force in progressive hard rock music. The band's 20-year musical legacy is explored on GREATEST HITS.
There were numerous comparisons to Iron Maiden when Queensryche released its debut EP, and "Queen of the Reich" is evidence that these weren't entirely baseless. "The Lady Wore Black" hints at what was to become the band's trademark sound--describing it as powerfully emotional is an understatement--while the guitar and vocal harmony-driven "Walk in the Shadows" showcases the impressive multi-octave vocal range of frontman Geoff Tate. Unquestionably the defining moment of the band's career, the concept album OPERATION: MINDCRIME featured landmark songwriting, including "I Don't Believe in Love" and "Eyes of a Stranger." Queensryche reached an even wider ...

| | Darrell Webb Behind The Scenes CD (2005)
Super Hits 1971 CD music
$9.89 The post-millennium proliferation of bluegrass performers on labels like Pinecastle and Lonesome Day shows no signs of letting up. And with a healthy market, listeners can choose between traditional, progressive, and the mushy middle. Mandolinist-singer Darrell Webb falls on the more traditional end of the pendulum, proudly showcasing the country twang in his vocal style on Behind the Scenes. He deepens the impression of good, old-fashioned music by relying on an even dozen songs that also lean toward tradition. The album gets a good start with the bouncy "Beg You Little Darling Not to Cry," and there's plenty of hot picking by Webb and guitarist Ron Stewart. While Webb handles most of the vocals on Behind the Scenes, he lets Dolly Parton take the lead on "Cold," a song she wrote. Parton's in good voice, and there's some great dobro work by Phil Leadbetter. There's also a nice take on "The ...
