By the early '80s, trumpeter Maynard Ferguson's disco-heavy "jazz" albums, so commercially viable through the previous decade, had already begun losing their hip cachet. Disco itself was on the wane and Ferguson, with his jumpsuits, smoky sunglasses, and obscenely high trumpet playing, was quickly becoming a parody of himself. Thusly, jazz fans in 1982 were generously bequeathed Hollywood, easily one of the ex-Kenton-ite's worst career efforts. Produced by bassist extraordinaire Stanley Clarke (who also supplied the title track), the result is an airbrushed and extroverted pop pastiche of dancefloor-ready songs that have absolutely nothing to do with jazz. Basically, by this point the MF Band was churning out well-produced, if predictable, instrumental versions of pop tunes with little if any improvisation. To these ends, Michael Jackson's "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" does little to improve on the original, and the tacky mix of banjo and synthesizer on Ferguson's then-latest attempt to squeeze blood from the proverbial soundtrack orange on "Nine to Five'" is simply nauseating. By the time you get to the bloated and over the top version of "For Your Eyes Only," it's clear things have come to some kind of Waterloo. Not surprisingly, this was the last of Ferguson's bids for crossover success and he disbanded his large ensemble soon after, choosing to spend the better part of the '80s playing slightly more straight-ahead jazz. ~ Matt Collar

Portugeuse Love gets 3. The title's supposed to be IRONIC! Nobody loves M.F. more than I do.
But this album was the Columbia low point. Even he acknowledges it in his Bio....

$10.49 Maynard Ferguson's version of "Birdland" from this LP was a bit of a hit and he fares fairly well on "Stella by Starlight" and "Over the Rainbow," but overall this typically commercial Columbia album is of lesser interest. MF, at the height of his popularity, was clearly looking for a hit, which is why he recorded "Theme from Battlestar Galactica" and roughly half of the poppish material on this rather forgettable effort. The trumpeter/bandleader would record worse albums than this LP, but this one is weak enough. ~ Scott Yanow
Popular. A big seller, but weak from the jazz standpoint. ~ Ron Wynn

| | Maynard Ferguson Hot CD (1979) Reissued
Hollywood
$10.49 Hot could be the absolute worst of trumpeter Maynard Ferguson's '70s recordings. It's not just that it contains more over the top versions of theme songs -- "Rocky II Disco" anyone? -- and generally vomitive dancefloor-ready production, but more to the point, 'ol MF just doesn't sound good. His chops, long overworked by years of obscenely high trumpet squealing, are beginning to let him down. The problem is particularly glaring on the "Gospel John" reworking "Gabriel," in which Ferguson "fracks" and plays out of tune ...

| | Erik Friedlander Prowl CD (2006)
Hollywood
$14.29 A deceptively smooth recording from the Erik Friedlander Quartet (sometimes going by the name of Topaz), Prowl offers the paradox of complex improvisational music so adroitly executed that its particular virtues might be overlooked by the casual listener. Originally set up by Friedlander as a trio composed of himself on cello, Andy Laster on alto saxophone and clarinet, and Stomu Takeishi on electric bass, Topaz were a deliberate experiment in music-making without a chordal instrument, e.g., keyboard or guitar. However, the absence of rhythmic thrust restricted the energy of the group to the extent that Stomu's brother Satoshi was eventually added as a percussionist. ...
