Most of Haiku, Joey Calderazzo's first set of unaccompanied piano solos, is thoughtful, lyrical, melodic, and a bit introspective. The music evolves at its own pace, is full of subtle surprises, and often sounds as if Calderazzo is thinking aloud. It differs from new age music in that Calderazzo's flights take unpredictable turns, he never sticks to just one preplanned one-chord vamp, and the results are quite heartfelt. The exceptions from the quiet music are the opening "Bri's Dance," which is quite high-powered and displays Calderazzo's impressive technique and ability to think fast; a quirky version of "Just One of Those Things" that keeps on changing its tempo; the happy stride of "Dancin' for Singles"; and a more concise but no less heated second version of "Bri's Dance." If Haiku had included more performances like these, it would have been a classic instead of being merely a brilliant set of restrained improvising. ~ Scott Yanow

JazzTimes (p.88) - "'My One and Only Love' slowly intensities as it uncovers connotations of the melody, then recedes again. It is both musically sophisticated and emotionally sincere." | | Dave Holland Overtime CD (2005)
Haiku music CDs
$13.49 This exceptional date by Dave Holland Big Band was recorded in 2002 in New York, yet remained unreleased until 2005. As is to be expected, Holland assembled a fine cast of seasoned and young players, some of whom are veterans of Holland's quintets and quartets. These are four saxophones -- two alto, tenor and baritone -- three trumpets and trombones, and vibes as well as bass and drums. They include ...

With funding from SFJAZZ, Redman put together an octet of younger, high-profile players including himself, alto saxophonist/flutist Miguel Zenon, pianist Renee Rosnes, trumpeter Nicolas Payton, trombonist Josh Roseman, drummer Brian Blades, and ...

| | Zoot Sims At The Half Note CD (2000)
Haiku album
$10.25 During a long friendship, Zoot Sims and Al Cohn worked together on many occasions, and this 1965 broadcast from New York City's Half Note is one of many examples of how well they complemented one another's playing. Pianist Roger Kellaway, bassist Bill Crow and drummer Mel Lewis make up their potent rhythm section. The only well known piece is "The Red Door" (jointly written by Sims and Gerry Mulligan), the remaining songs are fairly obscure, with "Doodle Oodle" being a variation of "Sweet Georgia Brown," while "Saratoga Hunch" was written during this period by Dave Frishberg specifically for Sims and Cohn. Unfortunately, this CD is plagued with unexpected volume surges and fades in several tracks, especially in the middle of Roger Kellaway's solo in "Doodle Oodle." The music is worth hearing, but beware of the sound problems. ~ Ken Dryden
Zoot Sims and Al Cohn made many marvelous recordings together over several decades, but this Mexican CD of what is purported to be a 1965 air check from New York City's Half Note is hardly equal to the many commercial releases featuring the two tenor saxophonists. Not only is this release skimpy on packaging with no liner notes or composer credits, the sound is aggravating, as the volume frequently (and unexpectedly) goes up and down in the middle of a song. Both Sims and Cohn are in top form, with a rhythm section given as Roger Kellaway, ...
| | Have You Ever Seen Meadowlark Jivin' CD (2006)
Haiku CD music
$16.45 And just what is a Meadowlark Jivin' anyway? A bird's-eye view of a meadowlark flight-surveying the continents of Soul, Funk, Jazz, and Blues? A funky bird spinning in flight like a Harlem Globetrotter launched trajectory bound to 'do-ya' in the ear-hole? It's all that and then some. After 7 years of working together, and two CD's under their belt, Meadowlark Jivin' has definitely put in the required hours and dedication to make for a unique and satisfying listening experience. Tim Van Schmidt of The Coloradoan described their CD release "Have you ever seen Meadowlark Jivin?" as a: "spicy, funky sound with irresistible rhythms, start-stop precision arrangements and a cool hip attitude."Brian Hull's songwriting, and passionate vocals are at the crux of the Meadowlark Jivin' experience. A published poet and lover of jazz, Hull's songs always tell a vivid story musically and word wise. And I quote: "Califradgilistic-frigerator, spasticazazical-dispensator, ...
