Riding high on the success of their second full-length album VENI VIDI VICIOUS, and the singles collection YOUR NEW FAVOURITE BAND, the Hives returned to blow more doors open with 2004's TYRANNOSAURUS HIVES. Steeped inexorably in the influence of the Stooges, the New York Dolls, and the nervous, jittery punk and New Wave of CBGB's golden era, this Swedish quintet offers up a rock & roll brew difficult to resist. With their dependably raucous party vibe, the Hives churn out spastic, riff-driven tunes with sing-along choruses over taunt grooves and jackhammer rhythms.
From tongue-in-cheek monster-movie blues ("Diabolic Scheme") to the herky-jerky, Devo-esque "Two-Timing Touch and Broken Bones," to the bouncy fun of the album's lead-off single "Walk Idiot Walk," the Hives push all the right rock buttons. Garage-bred aesthetics, like fist-pumping anthemic choruses and singer Howlin' Pelle Almquist's rasp-scream, are nicely counterbalanced by crisp production and the occasional keyboard embellishment. While they're not stunningly original, it is hard to argue with the Hives. This is everything rock music should be--catchy, rhythmically infectious, and unapologetically wild.

Spin (p.66) - Ranked #13 in Spin's "40 Best Albums of the Year" - "[A] marvelous example of the white-hot advances in Swedish rock technology." Entertainment Weekly (p.106) - 3 1/2 stars out of 5 - "The Hives may be hard-partying rock animals, but from the sound of TYRANNOSAURUS HIVES, they're also a tribute to the precision and power of Swedish engineering." Q (p.104) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[A]n album of super-fast songs featuring yelping, punchy riffs..." Uncut (p.91) - 3 stars out of 5 - "TYRANNOSAURUS HIVES contains hints of artistic depth." Alternative Press (p.117) - 4 out of 5 - "What is in abundance are retro-punk vibes, raw garage rave-ups and unabashed new wave." CMJ (p.4) - "The good thing is that they haven't mellowed - the sweaty Swedes strike a balance between tailored rock hooks and a chaotic punkish performance." Mojo (Publisher) (p.98) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[A] razor sharp updating of previous themes....[T]heir guitar throttling raison d'ˆtre still packs an infectious pop wallop." pretty good I really like most of the songs on this album. My favorite is "Walk Idiot Walk". When i run in the mornings i really enjoy listening to them. The last few on the cd aren't all that great, but the top ten are really good. Submitted by uberchef (Fort Collins, CO) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

The Hives - Back With a Vengeance After the wait since their last new album in 2000 (sure, Your New Favourite Band was released in 2002, but it was a collection of top cuts from previous releases) Tyrannosaurus Hives shows that The Hives still have the ability to hook the listener with their lightning-fast garage rock grooves. On repeated listens it's obvious which songs were intended to take up space, but it's still loads of fun. The best songs are Two Timing Touch and Broken Bones, Walk Idiot Walk, and B is for Brutus. Tyrannosaurus Hives album
$6.19 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously ...
| | Iggy Pop Skull Ring CD (2003)
Tyrannosaurus Hives CD music
$13.29 In terms of sonic fingerprints, 2003's SKULL RING is as close as solo Iggy Pop had come to the classic Stooges sound since the `70s. By this time, Iggy had reunited with the surviving Stooges, who back him on four cuts. Accordingly, those tracks are full of raw, punky fervor, but so are most of the other cuts here. In addition to his regular (non-Stooges) band, Iggy is backed variously by Green Day and Sum 41, who add a fresh punch to the old master's rock & roll drive. Peaches joins in for a couple of duets as well, which turn out to be some of the rawest, most agreeably unhinged moments on the album. SKULL RING would be Iggy's last solo release for some time, as he would soon ...
| | Strokes Room On Fire CD (2003)
Tyrannosaurus Hives music CDs
$6.39 After the hype--and subsequent backlash--over the Strokes' debut album, IS THIS IT, many fans and skeptics alike came to realize that the band's catchy, punk-pillaging rock ditties were, ultimately, very difficult to resist. Their eagerly anticipated follow-up, ROOM ON FIRE, is cut from the same vintage 1970s cloth, but added flourishes keep the album from sounding like a mere redux.
"What Ever Happened?" opens ROOM ON FIRE with a chiming, staccato guitar riff and kicks into the immediately identifiable Strokes swagger. However, while listening to Julian Casablancas's melancholy lyrics and the song's carefully crafted changes, it's clear that this is a maturing band that knows its strengths. This notion is further supported by the hard-charging "Reptilia," one of the group's ...
| | p j harvey Uh Huh Her CD (2004)
Tyrannosaurus Hives songs
$12.59 Many tracks on UH HUH HER are so spare that they might be mistaken for demos, and this minimalism works in the album's favor. "Shame" and "Pocket Knife" both consist of little more than a steady beat and subtle instrumentation, but they allow Harvey's bold, emotive voice to come to the fore. Harvey's signature sense of menace shows up on a number of songs, including the lumbering "The Life & Death of Mr. Badmouth" and the dynamic "The Letter." ...
| | Lucinda Williams Live @ The Fillmore West CDs (2005) Digipak
Tyrannosaurus Hives album
$15.09 Never one to tread the expected path, Lucinda Williams followed her big breakthrough album, CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD, with a pair of low-key records full of sad, quiet, fragile songs (interrupted by the occasional barn-burner). LIVE @ THE FILLMORE concentrates heavily on those latter two releases, unleashing all the intense, burning emotions that lay at their core, making plain the inherent frisson lurking below the surface of such ostensibly ...
