| | Jimmy Cliff Black Magic CD Jimmy Cliff Discography of CDs
Bursting at the seams with famous guest artists, Jimmy Cliff's Artemis Records debut, BLACK MAGIC, made quite a splash, garnering a Grammy nomination in 2005. Without notable chemistry with the guests such an album could go awry, but given Cliff's creative acumen and Dave Stewart's savvy production, the record is a well-executed affair.
The reggae elder statesman gives an Eddy Grant-like tweak to Kool & the Gang's "(Ooh La, La, La) Let's Go Dancin'," featuring the band itself and a rap by contemporary reggae star Bounty Killer. Cliff turns up the socially conscious vibe via his ethereal collaboration with Sting and Tony Rebel, "People," while "War in Jerusalem" proves to be a crisp, 1970s-era reggae lament. Cliff's malleable persona also works well whether he's trading lines with Annie Lennox and Hawk Eye (a dancehall-inspired "Love Comes"), Wyclef Jean (the equally infectious "Dance") or, somewhat surprisingly, former tennis star Yannick Noah (a joyous "Take Your Time"). Most poignant is the thoughtful "Over the Border," a duet with Joe Strummer that ended up being one of the late Clash founder's last recordings. Given its shining guest spots and Cliff's consistently charismatic presence, BLACK MAGIC proves that the reggae icon remains a dynamic performer.

Black Magic album
$18.05 Growing up among Afro-Americans in Berkeley, CA, Greek-American Johnny Otis (born John Veliotes) always identified strongly with people of color. Before he had attained the age of 20 he was gigging with black jazz bands throughout the Southwest, and eventually organized an ensemble deliberately patterned after Count Basie's orchestra. This highly charged album of historical musical artifacts documents the very beginning of Johnny Otis' recording career. With one apparently unobtainable exception, the Classics Blues & Rhythm Series has assembled all of Otis' Excelsior recordings, made in Los Angeles between 1945 and 1947. This provides background and context for his more well-known ...

| | J J Jackson But It's Alright CD (1967)
Black Magic songs
$9.95 Soul belter J.J. Jackson is best known for his 1967 smash, "But It's Alright," but he has some fine singles and a couple of excellent albums as well, and 1967's But It's Alright on the Calla label is one of them. Kicking off with the infectious title track, the record alternates between flat-out rockers like "I Dig Girls," "Come See Me (I'm Your Man)" (which was written by Jackson, covered by the Pretty Things, and then reclaimed powerfully here), and "Boogaloo Baby," midtempo groovers ...

Black Magic music CDs
$17.75 When Rick Reuther begins to sing, heads turn! Sounds like Sinatra! Sounds like Bennett! These comparisons alone, while frequent, do not begin to capture the essence of Rick’s stage presence and warmth when entertaining an audience of fans. From tender ballads to swinging grooves, this is a singer in command of his craft. This CD is a well chosen collection of big band standards, plus two of Reuther's original compositions; The title ...
