Morgan Heritage have become standard bearers for roots reggae. Listening to the opening track here, it becomes apparent that they've taken ideas on board equally from Bob Marley and Third World. They're not afraid of making their sound commercial and accessible, although with a very pleasing thickness that's perfectly commendable. Indeed, for much of the first eight cuts here, they play within that template, with conscious lyrics about righteousness in both life and relationships, before they take an unexpected detour into hip-hop for a while -- and that's hip-hop, not dancehall. It's well done, but still the type of thing that will have you wondering if someone's been messing with your CD player. However, by "Propaganda" they're back where they should be, back with the roots and skanking along in a gentle groove, trading voices. With excellent production -- good bottom in the sound, stirring arrangements, and good performances where the voices, rather than the instruments, stand out -- they do what they do very well. It's impossible to criticize their forays into hip-hop; it's just not the reason people buy Morgan Heritage albums, really. A different EP for those experiments might have been a better idea. They close with a remix of "U've Got Me" (which isn't on the album) featuring Bounty Killer and Sizzla, which brings a strong dancehall edge to roots, a powerful, spare marriage of the past and the present. ~ Chris Nickson

Full Circle
$9.89 Principally recorded at the Record Plant, New York, New York in April and May 1968.
On ELECTRIC LADYLAND Jimi Hendrix stretched and experimented in the studio, going beyond the power-trio format on what would be his last studio album with the Experience. ELECTRIC LADYLAND was revolutionary in its scope and execution. Using New York City's Record Plant as a gateway to free expression, Hendrix traversed an abstract landscape containing compositions as weird and wonderful as "...And The Gods Made Love" and "1983...(A Merman I Should Turn To Be)."
Simultaneously looking forwards and backwards, Hendrix mixed in a song reminiscent of his time on ...
| | Muddy Waters Folk Singer CD (1964) Remastered
Full Circle
$8.49 Ultradiscs are mastered from the original master tapes using Mobile Fidelity's proprietary mastering technique, then plated with 24-karat gold and housed in a stress-resistant lift-lock jewel box.
"You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had" and "The Same Thing" did not appear on the original version of FOLK SINGER. They were recorded at a separate session in April 1964, three months after FOLK SINGER was released.
The title and cover photo of this 1963 recording were an attempt to cash in on the burgeoning American folk revival, but this is pure acoustic blues. Muddy began his career as a Robert Johnson-style solo acoustic performer, and the tunes on FOLK SINGER hark back to those days. He's accompanied sparsely by Willie Dixon, drummer Clifton James and a young Buddy Guy, who provide a stark, deliberate backdrop for ...

Full Circle
$14.39 Spanish percussionist Ramon Lopez's fifth album for Leo (and the fourth under his own name) pays homage to a saxophonist often excluded from the list of 1960s titans, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, with a set of nine duets (eight Kirk covers and one original), and intriguingly, there's not a saxophonist in sight. Instead, Theirry Madiot converts his trombone into a plumber's nightmare, Emmanuel Bex gets sleazy on the Hammond organ, Chim Nwobueze waxes lyrical on the musical saw, Basque vocalist Benat Achiary ...
