Personnel: Patricia Barber (vocals, piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Jason Narducy (vocals); John McLean (guitar); Michael Arnopol (bass); Eric Montzka (drums, percussion); Ruben P. Alvarez (percussion). Recorded live at The Green Mill, Chicago, Illinois between July 17-19, 1999. Personnel: Patricia Barber (vocals, piano, Hammond b-3 organ); John McLean (guitar); Michael Arnopol (bass guitar); Eric Montzka (drums, percussion); Ruben P. Alvarez (percussion). Additional personnel: Jason Narducy (vocals). Companion was recorded in a special three-night series of shows in July, 1999 at Chicago's famed Green Mill jazz club -- an unusually short amount of time to produce a live album. To mine as much material as possible from those nights the performances were run more like recording sessions than live shows, with the crowd reverently hushed. Patricia Barber is in her element and the only thing that seems to have suffered for the recording circumstances is the album's length -- at seven songs and 40 minutes, it walks the line between standard EP and full-length size. One surmises that it might have been longer had there been more album-quality material from the performances. Recalling the energy that was present on her critically worshipped Café Blue album, there is an ease and creativity on Companion which makes her fans' devotion understandable. Barber has been criticized for being a jazz singer in the loosest sense -- her style borrows heavily from R&B and she often covers pop songs (Sonny Bono's "The Beat Goes On" is a sheer stylish delight), and her song "If This Isn't Jazz" answers that criticism with a thumb to the nose. What many critics fail to notice, however, is the strength of her musicianship. Sexism within the industry keeps many from seeing female jazz performers playing roles other than those of vocalists -- Barber's warm, breathy voice and creative phrasing are wonderful, for sure, but what really shines are her arrangements. With a talented band behind her, on Companion Barber has made magic with her compositions, her piano playing, and yes, her voice. Intended to be a companion to Modern Cool, this album of mostly previously unrecorded material serves as an excellent introduction to all of her work. ~ Stacia ProefrockUncut (3/00, p.85) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Barber, truly, is in a class of her own....Barber's effectiveness is her ability to percolate at any temperature rather than boil over..." Down Beat (2/00, p.66) - 4.5 out of 5 - "...a knock-out....The sound of this live recording is extraordinary....capture[s] the emotional dynamic range of an evening with Patricia Barber..." | | Solomon Burke That's Heavy Baby 1971-1973 CD (2005) (Import) Australia
Companion
$19.99 Raven presents the very best of Solomon Burke's recordings for MGM in the 1970s, many on CD for the first time. A pioneering soul singer, Burke's powerful voice and fervent emotionality were much-admired through the 1960s. At MGM, with arranger Gene Page, Solomon deftly crafted a commercial and contemporary sound - both urban pop ballads and rhythmic hymns to black empowerment, all framed around his impassioned voice. Using fractured, multi-layered background vocals (a la Marvin Gaye), and deep vocals not unlike Barry White, Burke created, ...
| | Ike & Tina Turner Nutbush City Limits / Feel Good CD (1972) (Import) Bonus Tracks; Australia
Companion
$19.99 Raven presents two classic soul/funk albums by Ike & Tina Turner, "Nutbush City Limits" and "Feel Good" on one CD for the first time. Dominated by Tina Turner's powerful voice and volcanic stage presence and Ike's hard-driving guitar, the duo's incendiary, funked-up blend of rock and soul made them one of the most potent live acts of the early 1970s. These two storming albums saw the duo transplant the visceral frenzy of their stage act successfully into the studio. Complete with five bonus tracks, including the Extended Disco Version of their iconic signature tune "Nutbush City Limits" and Tina Turner's super-funky rendition of The Who's "I Can See For Miles", this 25-track, 77 minute CD represents great value for all fans of rock, soul and funk. Raw, passionate, sexual and celebratory: this is Ike and Tina Turner ...

Many of the legends of acoustic guitar in the 20th century have already passed on -- John Fahey, Robbie Basho, Ali Farka Toure. Due partially to his spare recording career, Peter Walker's own reputation has not always been as well known as those of said giants, but his own influence has been considerable. A Raga for Peter Walker -- a tribute album that, in a nice touch, not only consists of work composed by its contributors rather than simply ...
